Recently I bought pre grounded coffee but it tasted kind of bad and made me headache. First time bought pre grounded actually, before this always use roasted bean. Is generally pre grounded coffee taste bad or I just chose the wrong brand and quality?

maybe it was mixed with some robusta bean in it...
but nothing beats fresh roasted, fresh ground coffee...

Whoooahhhh.... everybody take a deep breath. I think the text-only nature of forums is rearing its ugly head. Tons of misunderstanding, on both sides (heh heh to coin a Trump phrase).

To use utraben's metaphor, you can still make a fantastic steak with the cheapest skillet from a hypermarket. On the other side, you can use a thousand ringgit skillet and still have an inedible steak, if either the chef is unskilled, or the meat was poor quality.

Good equipment only makes things easier, not necessarily better.

However there is one truism: you can't make a great coffee with bad or unfresh beans. You can use the best machine and it will still taste bleah....
*
been there, when i forgot to clear my bean hopper for 1.5 months...
the taste comparing to when it was fresh roasted... bangwall.gif

take into consideration consistency..
also tried to grind finer and coarser also put more beans...end up throwing 400gm of beans into trashcan..

i got a problem with my oscar 1; only 2 holes in the steam wand is working - how to clean them? can the tip be unscrewed?
*
usually do this with my machine..
-fill a cup with hot boiling water
-dip the steam wand into the hot water for 4-5 minutes.
-purge the steam wand...
-sometime i also use tiny stainless steel wire to clean the steam tip..

1. Can use Cafiza® Espresso Machine Cleaning Powder. Cheaper to get from TaoBao I believe.
2. I haven't seen anyone that sells them in Malaysia, even coffex don't have them. They say as long as you are using filtered water should be fine  sweat.gif
3. Havent de-scale mine before. Most water sources from Syabas in the Klang Valley are soft water. Since the water I used for coffee has been tripled filtered as well, so I don't think there is much build up to de-scale. But in case you want to know how, check your Breville Hand book, or refer to Breville, check and see your batch code, and read-up accordingly.
*
1. i got my cafiza from a seller in mudah..Rm55
https://www.mudah.my/Urnex+Cafiza+2+Espress...5521.htm?last=1

2. 3m water filter from ebay / water filter supplier shop..home machine can use water from RO water filter..

i usually avoid clear looking jar..more into air tight, dark container..since light can make the coffee deteriorate

Salute coffee lover buddies!
I was both surprised and amazed to know that there’s a big community of coffee lovers here in Lowyat.

After surfing many threads, there seems to have different opinions about the Vietnam coffee. Asides from the positive, some describes it as burnt, bitter type, so hyper, headache or even steal their sleep and so on… OMG, I agree, as a Vietnamese it’s like a common taste to drink like that and yah it’s quite strong.
However, probably people realize that there are different types of coffee & many more different factors influencing the coffee quality. And I want to bring you a new perspective about Vietnam coffee.

No more high caffeine, Arabica is selected & planted at higher latitude of 1200 to 1600m.
The trees were organically planted, using permaculture technique without using chemicals at all.
Instead of dry processing, our coffee cherries are wet-processed and fermented.
The green beans are air roasted by Italian technology
On top of that, we mix them with the rare Moka Arabica at ratio of 1:9.

The coffee comes with a mild euphoria, help you stay focused, fresh, but do not take away your sleep, no effects on your heartbeat or digestive system. It’s aromatic, lightly sour & leaving a natural sweetness after taste. We name it Le Plateau - http://bit.ly/2C0z1g3

Guys, I've modded my Delonghi EC680 portafilter to bottomless (with non-pressurized filter basket) and I get spurt all over. I've tried almost everything suggested by most people.. grind setting, hard & light tamp and WDT too. Perhaps it's time for me to change my current hario skerton grinder to a better one.

Any suggestion for grinder in the range of rm1.5k and below? anyone tried welhome's zd-17?

As a Barista myself and a home coffee brewer.

If you're ain't rich, don't ever think of getting yourself a grinder + espresso machine yourself. Unless you have the budget of 4k just for the machines itself..

Dont forget to count the cost of your coffee. For decent beans it would cost you about rm3 to make it + eletrical fees + cleaning time and etc.. Not worth it..

Let's say you buy a cup of coffee from the cafe down the street it would only cost you about RM8-11? The money you put in your machines can get at least 3 years of coffee supply. 1 cup a day lol.. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL COFFEE SHOPS! hahaha

But if you're talking about hand-brew like aeropress, v60, handbrew then go for it. That would only cost you at most rm1000 for good manual grinder + tools.

*
for me..u can get espresso capable machine under 1k if u want...but will be limited to machine that can serve around 5 cups a day..can do latte+art after some practice
4k machine if u are serious about your coffee la..
drinking at home is quite cheap, but the learning process will take some time..
also, if u maintain ur machine nicely it will last forever..(my NS musica aged almost 5 years already, still running strong)
but it is good for once a while to drink at cafe (i do it for my personal benchmark)
