Awesome thread! Just picked up this espresso interest few months back. Saving up like crazy for Rancilio Silvia and found out that our neighbor (SG) are selling the set (Rancilio Silvia Latest + Rancilio Rocky Grinder) at SGD1,350 - SGD1,600, which is way much cheaper than at Cuppa.

Just wondering has anyone ever successfully brought espresso machines from SG to Malaysia through airport or border? I'm talking about a new machine with no box, which can be considered as used machine la.. The kick is to lari from tax when landing in Malaysia. Heard the sales tax / import duties can go up to 30%

Time to do some research.. Can't seem to find a head to head comparison between the two machines. sad.gif

Is the performance a lot better than Rancilio? Some guidance please notworthy.gif notworthy.gif it's going to be my first semi-auto machine.

Coffee Ritual quoting Oscar 2 at 4k while Cuppa quoted Silvia at 3.7k

In terms of looks IMHO, I like the rugged look of Silvia a lot though. Oscar 2 is a bit too futuristic.

Nice professional way of measuring those shot.... Mine is simple, as long as the coffee ground doesn't over the rigged line too much then it is all good. i always get good constant shot  taste with crema. The only way i know if it is too much or too little ground, is when my tamper base is either over the half or under half of the base when i tamp it.
+1 from me
Get the oscar 2 as well,
I came from rancilio silvia ver 3. before i switch over Simonelli Oscar ver 1.

Silvia is a nice machine, all built of metal, robust even for internal parts hence the design of the silvia hardly change for 4 generation which makes it good because it prolong your machine as the spare part are available when breakdown any time due to similar design for 4 generation.

With this machine, it is recommended that you get the PID install to give a consistent control of the temperature because sometime the temperature can be exceeding the recommendation temp for brewing. Customize with PID is easy (Yes, i do customize my machine with PID back then, mine PID is low end type so no preinfusion included) and also it allow hot water dispenser which also makes it easy to do internal self cleaning.

As for the steam, it is as good as the oscar model, strong and powerful with single hole tip which required a little bit of technique getting used to for the milk to swirl in the pitcher to get the microfoam but once you get the hang out of it then your good to go.

Now the problem comes when the machine is a single boiler machine, mean that you can only do 1 process at 1 time. Each process complete needed to wait for like 10 second or more for the next process to happen because it need time to heat up the boiler for next process. By that time, either your milk or coffee become a bit cold due to waiting process. Hence that were the PID comes into play, It will help you to speed up abit the heating process (It wont damage your internal machine parts since it also control temp).
I cant comment much about Oscar ver 2. since i don't owned them but if you like to know about Oscar Ver 1. i can let you know  brows.gif
That is my review and take on Rancilio Silvia  thumbup.gif
Yup, with mudah, you can even get a commercial machine grade with price close to your Oscar or Silvia but bare in mind most of the owner who sell their machine are cafe owner. So you just got to beware on the internal parts and the machine year of service  biggrin.gif

P/S: i got my Simonelli Oscar from the cafe owner as well.  sweat.gif

Hello sifu! Hahaha thank you! thats very much the review I wanted to know from a Silvia owner. Yeah you are right, the "do 1 one thing at a time" that comes with a singlw boiler machine is kinda a drawback while they are on the same price range. and about the PID on silvia or any other machine, i don't think i'm intending to go that 'side' any time soon.

Tried looking at mudah for Silvia but nothing. Gaggia also nothing. Now eyeing on oscar 2 la, saving up a bit more should be fine. hahaha. Now another headache: Grinder to pair up with. Baratza/mahlkonig vario? Any owner review?

Ahaha, i'm not sifu's ....  biggrin.gif Just sharing my experience first hand since i used before Rancilio Silvia Ver 3.... that machine serve me well during my time of using but i regret that i should had go with the Oscar instead of Silvia because i was think steel made machine was cool but didn't really think deep into the functionality and usage until you really go deep into it.... that why i u-turn back to Oscar ver 1. now.

Regarding on the PID, i think it is much more suitable to be used on the Rancilio Silvia rather then other machine (Unless you are the micro down type of coffee drinker or coffee proffesor that need for research and perfectionist in coffee brewing type). With Oscar i don have to worry about temperature because it seem that heat exchange had better control then single boiler. Currently i'm happy with Oscar machine output on temp.

There used to be 2 machine seller for Silvia but i guess they sold off their machine already.

As for the grinder, i think Baratza/mahlkonig vario is not a bad choice but why not save up for sette 270. It had much improvement over Baratza/mahlkonig vario and also reduce much of the stale ground that left over after the grind....Plus the design are cool too  thumbup.gif

Papapalheta SG opened a Pre-order for Sette 270 at SGD 580. Let's just wait until the Malaysian branch bring it in. Considering its hype, the price tag is quite reasonable though. brows.gif brows.gif
