Hi all, is there any travel sized hand grinder that has the dial in capabilities similar to JX Pro for espresso?

And between the JX Pro and the ace48cs, which is better as an all rounder for pours and espresso?

I do not have the JX-Pro but have an older Z-Pro by 1Zpresso as well, and an ACE48s (not CS). In terms of build finishing the 1Z easily wins hands down in all categories. They did not cut any corners. The ACE48 on the other hand has numerous minor/cosmetic rough edges but IMHO nothing that affects grind quality.

You mention two brew methods that have significant differences in grind fineness. As such a consideration for you may be frequent switching between these two settings. In that case IMHO the JX-Pro may be a better fit (although significantly more expensive) as the clicks at least has some numeric markings which will enable you to get back to your previous setting with greater consistency. The ACE48 only has clicks and between pourover and espresso you go more than two entire revolutions so you have to be very careful to count clicks.

Thanks for your insight!
I think i'll stick with 1zpresso, and after considering I most likely will go for Q2 for the portability and perhaps invest in a JX-pro when I've moved onto espressos in future.

Anyone here have tried and compared the 1zpresso Q2 with Timemore Slim Plus?

Assuming I plan to get either a 1zpresso JX-Pro or JE-Plus or ACE48cs, what would be a good starter espresso model for a 1.5k budget (machine only). Hoping to have both espresso and milk drinks.

a) Gemilai CRM3605 with necessary mods: RM800-1000
b) Flair Classic/Pro2 + Manual stovetop milk steamer: RM950-1200 + Rm300
c) Others?

Personally, I would go with the Flair route, despite more work. Here's why:
1. it's good for learning espresso, I learnt a lot using my first gen Flair signature.
2. there's no components that will spoil easily, only the gaskets/o-rings which is the same for any machine. For the Gemilai, it is hard to predict how long the components will last, as it's a budget machine
3. If you decide to upgrade to a prosumer grade machine in the future, the flair is still a good complement, and it can still fetch a decent second hand price. Not so sure about Gemilai.
4. No need to worry about scaling problem or cleaning of the machine, until you're ready for it - must do diligently for prosumer machines

But of course you will need to steam milk separately and it doesn't feel like a typical "pulling a shot" with portafilter.

Thanks for your suggestion =D.
Flair definitely has an edge in maintenance. Do you have both? Is the quality of shots from the Flair comparable with Gemilai's? And is that applicable to both the Pro 2 and Signature/Classic or only the Pro 2?

c) wait for a few more months & top up a bit for the flair 58/flair 58X
,my guess RM1k/RM500 more than the pro2 but for the ease of cleaning, much easier to pull multiple shots, 58mm accessories compatibility,  thumbup.gif

The flair 58 is RM2.2k >.<. RM900 more than Flair Pro2 which perhaps for my use may be too expensive, esp since I'm only beginning in the hobby.

Anyone seen the X Bar? It is Chinese made, and early sold iterations (on Taobao, JD) used to be known as MPXY 11C. Using CO2 cartridges or a manual/auto bike pump as pressure source, with ability to pressure profile. In a way it is similar to the Portaspresso Rossa PG.

Using the CO2 you can pressure profile. But the concern of course is the cost of replacing those cartridges. I think it is very possible to refill refillable 8g cartridges with CO2 from Sodaxpress bottles (400g refill for RM40). 8g cartridge can last 2-3 shots, so RM40 refill should last you 100-150 shots. If you want to forgo the convenience and portability of the small cartridge, then you can opt to use an auto or manual bar pump, but it may be difficult to profile the pressure as accurately. The creators did say that they are looking to add as an upgradable kit in future an air reservoir that you can charge with a manual pump separately, and use (this sounds again very similar to Portaspresso Rossa PG).

There are several reviews of the production unit on Youtube. Mostly said that the taste is good, but you'll need to manage the thermals with preheating. Another pros is the standard 58mm portafilter compatibility, making this the cheapest entry point for a 58mm portafilter manual espresso machine with ability to pressure profile.

Anyone looking to pledge can use my link and we can share the rebates https://boost.pledgeboost.com/s/jjKS2ZrT

When I saw a review of this I thought, "it's that simple?". But it does seem like a really cheap way to get into espresso. It's not as hands on as something like the Robot or Flair, but for something more "automated" and easier repeatability, this could be it.

And the idea of a separate pressure reservoir or some sort is something that I wonder why it doesn't exist until now. Hopefully it'll be doable. Is there a variable pressure electric pump?

The creators are floating the idea of making the cartridge holder a reservoir of sorts where you can use a pump to fill it up and then you can use the air from there for the shots. Should be similar to how a Rossa PG Air functions.

But a variable pressure electric pump, I think that can be done by putting a regulator in between the pump and the X bar. Not sure how effective it is though.

I still think refilling the refillable CO2 cartridge using a sodaxpress bottle is the easiest method and I most likely will go that route after receiving the item, hopefully in september
