QUOTE(zellleonhart @ Jun 14 2021, 03:18 PM) If you dip in the specialty coffee community a bit more, you'll know that not all coffee beans are the same. There are cheap, commodity grade green beans used by supermarket pre-ground brands and also specialty grade beans coming from a specific farm with good quality control; and anything in the middle. I actually tried a few of the SOL coffee, yes, its not tat high high grade specialty bean, sometimes I felt tat there is only subtle difference between diff beans,The former costs only RM20-30 per 500g while the latter can costs RM60/200g or even up to RM150/100g depends on the rarity and many other factors. As far as I know, SOL uses relatively low grade beans compared to other specialty coffee roasters, hence the price. Don't be fooled by their "Single Origin" label. Yes it's still single origin (meaning from a single country/region like Colombia) but it is not a high grade S/O. The raw/green beans could be a different variant of colombian beens BUT on second thought I think it's also because green beans have less demand in the general consumer market. not tat pronounce. but I still cant really tell all those fancy taste notes, so I think its still ok for me to get by my day to day drink requirement for the price. I've tried quite a numbers of coffee in these 2-3years in my coffee journey, from beanshipper to ikea dark roast, from rm100+ 200gm bean I got from taiwan to nearby local roastery. sometime makes me wonder if it worth the extra if my taste bud cant really tell the fairly ok 1 with the very expensive 1. |

There are cheap, commodity grade green beans used by supermarket pre-ground brands and also specialty grade beans coming from a specific farm with good quality control; and anything in the middle. I did tried SOL coffee, and mainly use it for espresso brew with milk. Single origin specialty can be hefty, I tried Esmeralda Geisha bean on V60 brew, the taste was totally different. The former costs only RM20-30 per 500g while the latter can costs RM60/200g or even up to RM150/100g depends on the rarity and many other factors. As far as I know, SOL uses relatively low grade beans compared to other specialty coffee roasters, hence the price. Don't be fooled by their "Single Origin" label. However back to this coffee selection, everyone has different taste bud, expensive specialty that is good for you does not mean it is good for other. I only trust my taste bud which suit my preferences. I am sharing my coffee preferences journey for the past 2 years. Below are my preference for espresso brew with milk for daily consumption: 1. SOL El-Salvador Blend - this is the only blend I like, I tried the other blend but doesn't like the taste. 2. ForestCloud Lunarfall - I tried more than 2kg of beans from their Lunarfall blend, never failed me. But one thing I notice their bean loose their taste after 1 weeks of opening, I had to change my grinder setting after a week. I like their 250G packaging that allow you consume what you can during the 2 weeks period. 3. Sin Boon Kee Arabica Signature Blend - SBK historically famous for their penang kopi o. I was hesitated to try, but in the end get myself a pack. I was surprised by their caramel taste. Nevertheless, I tried using this for moka pot brew was well and it taste great if you like heavy body and bitter note. These 3 are my preference when coming to espresso brew with milk. Don't get me wrong, I did try others like Mister Coffee Arabica bean, and their Espresso Super Bar bean as well. Occationally I did try Big Tree Dark Roast, JWC Caramel PopCorn as well. My coffee routine doesn't stick to one type of brand and roast, it depends on my mood and roast availability as well. I would prefer to go for V60 brew, if I were to try out the specialty coffee. If I am experimenting or dial in the machine, I normally will goes for those average bean like Mister Coffee, SOL or SBK. End of days, your taste bud matter and good quality bean with good roaster definitely helps. |

Yeah no doubt at the end of the day, as long as you're satisfied, no one should tell you what beans to buy (or not buy). I was just addressing another guy's comment about the pricing, and to point out that there are many grades of beans. To be fair, the general Malaysian public who likes coffee usually prefers "kao" coffee with milk, which means darker roast will suit the taste more. Hence, average brands like Mister Coffee or SOL still taste good (for the preference above) because the roast level is relatively dark enough to cover any bean or origin defects. For myself I am used to medium and medium-light roast beans and the quality difference is much more distinct. But at the end of the day, great specialty beans is not cheap, not everyone wants to pay RM3-5 per espresso just for the beans cost alone. |

I am thinking to get an espresso machine for home now that we are working from home so much. I am considering the Breville BES870. What other options are there? Size is a concern as I have limited counter space. Not an advanced coffee drinker. however, I have one cup on average everyday.

QUOTE(raist86 @ Apr 18 2021, 02:51 PM) been using the DF64 (aka G-iota, Solo, Turin) grinder for 3 weeks now.. Ran through almost 3kg of failed roast beans to season the burrs. Nice setup, about the SSP unimodal burrs vs SSP High uniformity burrs, which is mainly for espresso? Lamarsa website indicate high uniformity for espresso?Am pleased to report it is a pretty solid single dose grinder for the price.. Mine came spec with Italmil steel burrs and my espresso grind setting is around -3 to -5 past the 0 mark. My zero point is about -10 (kinda hard to see because there's no mark). According to another forumer who swapped to SSP grind setting becomes more manageable due to SSP burrs' thickness. Burr touching point is on a higher ring number (10-15). Grind rentention / grind exchange is very consistent... weigh in 20g, output is between 19.9g - 20.1g consistently with the use of the blower. I found that sometimes a rogue bean or two will bounce around on the burrs instead of getting ground up with the rest. Have to keep pressing the blower couple of times to get it ground up.. Do other users experience the same? I Did blind taste of the DF64 and Breville Smart Grinder Pro with a couple friends (properly dialed in shots) and all agreed that the flat burr produces a shot with more clarity and easily distinguishable flavors compared to the muddled SGP shots. Waiting for SSP unimodal burrs to be restock at Lamarsa coffee and gonna swap it out. For the price sold by J Cofffee, it is a very capable grinder for home use. Solid build quality and easy to maintain. Just some minor niggles and kinks which can be worked around. ![]() |

So glad I found this thread.
I love drinking flat whites and usually get it from a cafe near my office. Now that I work from home a lot more often, I have been making instant coffee in the morning. Been thinking of trying to make my own flat white at home but don't want to invest too heavily in a high end machine. I came across the nespresso machine which boasts up to 15-19 bars of pressure and costs a fraction of the price. I could even get those reusable pods and fill it with different coffee beans until I find one I like. My question is, how much more worse is the espresso pull from a nespresso machine compared to the ones that are being discussed here? Is the nespresso gonna give me super subpar flat whites? |

QUOTE(EatSleepWork @ Jul 10 2021, 11:33 PM) So glad I found this thread. Overall, nespresso and espresso dont share much of the same property except that they're both produced from coffee beans. They will not taste the same, but with much less work using nespresso. I wont say that it is subpar, you can get pods from good roasters and it will taste good for consumption. But home brewing with espresso machine means you need to enjoy making coffee, not only drinking them.I love drinking flat whites and usually get it from a cafe near my office. Now that I work from home a lot more often, I have been making instant coffee in the morning. Been thinking of trying to make my own flat white at home but don't want to invest too heavily in a high end machine. If you are keen to learn more on home brewing, maybe start with simple coffee making like aeropress/v60/moka pot but they're consumed best without milk. Each will give diff kind of taste but will be a lot cheaper than getting an espresso machine. |
