My cheapo solution: citric acid powder purchased from the local baking goods store,  dissolved in water. After running about 10 cycles, I flush with plain water about 20 cycles, until I can't taste any sour residue in the water.

Thanks. How much citric acid did you use in the solution?

Very informative video for those who want to practise latte art..... Instead of using soap, you can practice using real milk, then keep on recycle the milk for better accuracy on your latte art.... milk wont break as long as you keep repeat the process  rclxms.gif

You might want to subscribe to this guy page also....he got tons of information relating to making a good cup of latte  thumbup.gif

It is roasted bean with expiry date, instead of roasting date. But i assume it is one year time from roasting date. The cafe is in penang gurney tower & not sure whether they provide online order. I jz recently found out this cafe sell cheap bean. Havent tested the bean bought there. So dont blame me if the bean is bad. 😂

I dont have high requirements on beans. I even use cap kapal api powder to make espresso. biggrin.gif

first crack and 2nd crack sound are very important sound during roasting process

Why do you need to hear the first/second crack when using a roaster like that? Wont you have a preset timing for that machine?
Sorry noob here.

Coffee roasting is not a set and walk away task. How fast you heat up the beans at each stage (dry, yellow, development), changes the flavor profile of the bean
First crack indicates the start of the development phase where sugar caramelizing goes full throttle so you would want to hear this sound to estimate time to drop the beans from that point after

Altitude and moisture level of the beans also affects the time taken to hit 1C as the RoR (rate of rise) of temps would be different - high density beans like a Ethiopian is going to need more heat input to rise 1C vs a low altitude Sumatran

But yes, if you've roasted the same coffee 10 times and have the trend and settings locked down, you could technically "try" to set and walk away (provided the roaster software allows this)
But electrical input has noise, ambient temp can change (day/night/rain/hot) or simply the age of beans has change the moisture level so the temperature curve is not going to behave exactly the same way

Yes, this is roasting  biggrin.gif

Thanks for the info.

So anywhere to find small quantity green beans? Maybe we should organize a trip to a local roaster haha

I have been buying green beans from here http://triumviratecoffee.com/ since last year.
This is the only place I know that sells green beans in small batch (250g) in Malaysia.

Anyone know where I can find the filter mesh for my French Press?
I don’t mind DIY ones too.

I got this bag of ground beans from Japan and I like the taste. However the ground beans are quite coarse and i need to use quite a lot to reach my desired taste. Would grinding it further improve it?

Using a blade grinder on grounds will give you terrible results; the clumps will form much quicker than it would than beans and the friction heat accumulates rapidly thereon.. For the fun of it, we have once tried re-grinding ground coffee using a burr grinder. The results? Not much advantage as ground looses freshness very quickly.

Since you won't be needing lotsa grams of coffee, you may try using a stone mortar and rub-grind them. if you have those smooth marble-like stone mortar, even better (else those tool can be found in any Mr.DIY). You can control the grind momentum much better with a mortar than a blade grinder..

Thanks.
I know coulombs will form and that’s why I mix the powder throughly before extracting them using an espresso machine. Pestle and mortar is a bit too messy and I don’t have any burr grinders as well..

Within the context of "ground coffee".. re-working them will definitely be messy.. And i gathered you're using a pressurized machine? Have you tried applying "manual pre-infusion" to your extraction? May try a 5-sec(tops) pre-infusion.

On the topic of a grinder, i seldom avocate this, but in your case.. maybe you can seriously consider a manual hand grinder.. Can find one online(e.g) Shopee for sub RM30. Of if you can source from forumers here who just upgraded their hand grinders for their former tool(s).. Else you're wasting coffee with that blade grinder (we been there, we know)
*
A hand grinder for RM30 is well worth a shot. I thought all hand grinders are >RM100
Thanks for your advice. Would search for this.
