IMO, they can save cost of making the 3.5mm port, save cost of audio jack license fees, save iphone internal space for other parts.
Fully utilizing lighting port + earn some (perhaps more) licensing fees from accessories vendors, get some ROI on lighting port research and production line.
Don't forget beats is now Apple, Im sure Beats is ready for Apple lighting port audio I/O. With early sales, they can choke up price due to less competition.
