Whether it's tradition or not, no one knows. Most of the people recognize this "so-called" tradition through hear say but if it makes the elders happy then we as the younger generation should just follow for the sake of compliance.
Yes, it is in fact an accepted practice that for the Chinese community, newly wedded couples are bound to give 2 angpows, each from the couple but it is also generally accepted that each of these does not contain a large or significant amount because everyone knows or should "pretend" to know that the newly wedded couples are short of finances so it's ok not to give RM50.00 or an amount in which you think you cannot afford.
Giving angpow is a blessing so don't give it with a heavy heart and then go back home and curse.
Unless you are known for being filthy rich, an amount between RM5 - RM10 from each individual will be sufficient.
Don't burden yourself with unnecessary issues.
