just wanna share -

i just got a cheap cap ayam dvd player brand Agip that does upconvert to 720p and 1080i via component...using it with my infocus sp4805...not bad.
For info, the player desnt have hdmi out...hence the cheap price.

Furthermore my infocus does not have hdmi, so finding to get improvements of 480i dvd via component is really something that i look forward to.

After testing, my untrained eye can see a slightly sharper pic...used to used the projector's own faroudja scaler via 480i component but setting the dvd player at 720p, the image seemed to become a bit more sharper...i cant even see any jagged edges now

Anyone else has used this dvd player? any comments coz i might just me 'hallucanting' in awe coz of the cool feature? Heck, ive got a feeling that the new flock of cheap dvd players out there will have this upconvert feature installed...which is damn good!

good to know that i might not need hdmi as yet now smile.gif

Didn't go through the entire 100+ pages, so I don't know if this has been mentioned yet.  I own an OPPO DV-981HD and it is by FAR the best non-HD player I have seen.  Not only does the player upscales standard DVD into 1080P with top-notch components, its ability to take PAL or NTSC materials, and output to PAL or NTSC displays makes it universally accepted.  I have a Denon reference DVD player customized with SDI output to an DVDO iScan VP30 for a side-by-side comparison (for those of you not familiar, they cost about RM5000 combined) and this player beats it by far.

I am still not entirely sold on Blue Ray yet because the movies looked like they were over sharpened via PhotoShop and therefore unrealistic.

bro

where did i buy the oppo? can get it in m'sia?

btw - i agree about blur ray...sometimes too sharp...looks too digitze...if u go to watch films in cinema, where got things too sharp one...but maybe that's just me

if you could live without HDMI upscale , just buy a korean capalang brand call AGIP with DIVX and USB . you can only use component cables though.
i own one of these and it play all kind of rubbish dvd disc i throw in . the only complaint is that is damn noisy if the disc are running .

what the heck , it cost only RM 135 about 9 months ago . check it out at tesco

hey...i got this too...but i guess my new philips 5996 will replace this...coz my hd65 got hdmi input...so very gatal to use the input...haha

actually the AGIP is not too bad for the price...too bad it can't really upscale some ori dvds...set some of these dvds to 720p...it'd still go back to 576i...but pic still good though

bought 5996 for RM360+Girafe HDMI..some say it can play file from hard disk, i tried for few times, but it cant..maybe some "otai" out there know hows...or shud the hard disk format to FAT32 instead of NTFS?

need some help,

anyway the quality of this player well acepted, USB conn quit speedy compare to my LG before..

use my Astro coaxial cable as digital connector instead of RM220 original coaxial, just spent RM10 to buy composit connector to terminate the existed cable, what a practical tips from some 1 on this forum. TQ bros...

rm360? u paid by cash i presume? i paid by card...so the price didnt go down...stuck at rm369...still ok though

yeah...astro cable is presume is rg56...so shud do fine...i guess if the sounds quality is good, then i guess u shud be happy with it!

did u get the rca ends at jalan pasar? how much...used to get it for like rm2 or rm3 only....the bnc to rca and F-cnnector to rca is around that price too. Oh...read somewhere last time that could use wire hangar also to deliver the digital sound...that's be cool...habislah all hanger in the house like that tongue.gif hehe

if someone could do a blind test comparing this quality with those darn expensive Monster or IXos cables...i'd love to hear the results...

btw - i hope i'm still within the topic smile.gif

Both are equally good in playing your fav ahem dvds. As for spare parts, Sony is easier to find.

just now i wanted to play one dvdr. Played it at 2 cap ayam players...film was jerking all the way. Even my old philips dvd recorder could not read the dvdr at all.

But then put in my new 5996 - voila! no problem at all. The whole film ran smoothly....no jerk at all. The SQ was much better too than the 2 cap ayam...

so yeah...go for 5996!

optical out only...the drawback is that not easy to find long run cables...coaxial cables easy, can just DIY to whatever length u want

Well another quick question then for the sifus smile.gif

I'm using Yamaha RX-V540 AVR at the moment (3 Optical 1 Coaxial) . I have an old Philips DVD player currently connected to the AVR via Optical.

What I want to know is, I noted that the 5996 only have digital coaxial. My AVR only have one digital coaxial connection under the label for CD. Would it be a problem getting Dolby Digital/DTS via the CD coaxial input? Full 5.1 sound or will the amp revert to 2.0 sound?

If it will cause problems, then I have to opt for the Pioneer 410V instead since I think it has optical out.

So should I get Phillips 5996 at RM399 + RM? for Coaxial cable

Or

Pioneer 410V at RM460 and use existing optical cable?
*
i think it shud be alrite...cd or dvd is just labels given for the input...it should go through the same processing...

i have a marantz receiver and i'm using one of the coaxial inputs to share between my old philips cd player and a portable dvd player...2.0, or 5.1... all can be used with no problem from the same coaxial input...

Hi all audio folks,

I am new to this forum & hope to get some of your experts advises.

Currently I m using LG Box Home Theatre speaker system to hook up my panny plasma 42' tv via "Component Cable" as it does not have HDMI output. For Astro, I am using S-Video.

My questions are:

1) Will the pic quality be enchanced if I were to buy a new DVD HDMI player to connect my Plasma tv? Some ppl say component & HDMI connection will not make much difference if I am not using Bluray disc player. It this true?

2) Will I scarifice the surround sound if the new DVD HDMI player audio signal is input into my LG all-in-one amplifier? My LG box player has internal DTS function. I am worried I will not enjoy DTS sound if external player is connected to it.

3) Why certain DVD players have DTS output function? What does it mean?

Thanks in advance.

Audio Dilemma,
Mikapoh

for 3, to use DTS, manufacturers have to pay license to use the DTS...
