I've got my LG 42LC2R delivered yesterday at the cost of RM6k..
Dead pixel and light leakage free but with minor uneven backlight (only obvious when no signal). patiently set my HTPC output to 1360x 768, then plug in DVI to HDMI cable to the TV and reboot...  vola....perfect 1:1 pixel mapping at HDMI port!!!!!! damn chun, with the tears of joy and the feeling is like first time making love....kakakaka...

very satisfied with this purchase and it's really value for money. Tv reception seems to be good. need time to calibrate and will do a short review if i'm free....too busy with the TV.

Congrats bro. Just don't let ur wife know about the making love part....women can never understand men and their electronic toys...ha-ha...

Simple as to get rid of the worry about QC. Im sure if u have bought things or heard / read stories of the product from the 'certain places' u will understand. I personally experience it b4 and it gives a hell of a nightmare.

Well the LCD unit is assemble in M'sia and imported to UK and some other countries, as told by the promoter. I do not want to take d risk, so might as well settle with a sony 40" or a Aquos 42".

Yeah...i've no confidence in China products either...however, i believe there is difference buying a China made brand "Cap X", compared to branded product, although they're made in China.

In fact, in the future, and now, almost everything will be made in China. So wat to do??

My PS2 also made in China...i believe PS3 also the same. All these multinational manufacturing companies now have setup factories in China to make their products or else they can't compete with the price already.

One thing though, i try to avoid canned food from China...dunno wat they put inside...too many horror stories..

Hi,

I'm looking for a HDMI upscaling player and considering these two. (they're the cheapest i find).

The price quoted is from Best Denki and both includes HDMI cable.

Samsung HD870 (RM399)
LG 298H (RM399)

I'm leaning more towards the Samsung since i found relatively good review for it and can't find any reviews for the LG.
Furthermore, i'll be getting a Samsung LCD also. smile.gif

What do u guys think?

I'm gonna stay away from SONY coz i've some bad experience with their DVD player. I never realized my SONY DVD player have problem connecting standard audio coz i'm using optical all the while...suddenly one day, i plug into my bedroom TV via analog sound and it has constant buzzing sound!!! sad.gif

So, which to choose, Samsung or LG??

finally, got myself a Sony 76H on last Friday from ESH (SS2) at RM399 (what a steal!!).

watched "Apple Seed" with it at 1080i and was really really impressed. so did "Heroes" series and LOTR II.  rclxms.gif
with the upscaling, the colour becomes richer and the details are sharpen.
gorgeous!

in term of playability, so far it has managed to play whatever i threw at it, be it ori, ahem or even those china tvb series, including discs that have previously skipped/unable to play on Cap Ayam dvdp.

i also quite impressed with the noise reduction features (which i think has been taken off in the 78H model), because it does improve the PQ of those low resolution softwares (like those 15 episodes-in-one-disc tvb series  sweat.gif )

the menu was a little confuse at first, but after a few try, it became quite easy.

the remote control, nothing much to shout about, although i quite like the feature that it can be set to control my Samsung R8. but it does get a little too sensitive at times.

and yes, as some of our forumers have mentioned, the loading time is a bit long, so does the opening/closing of disc tray.

overall, i'm satisfied with this machine. 4/5 stars!  icon_rolleyes.gif

Where is this ESH? I've been to SS2 just now, but don't seem to see this shop.

Is this really true? My Philips 5986 has that logo with the "3" at the back of it. Unfortunately, I do not have any other region coded discs other than "3" to test it with. My 2 older Sony's also have the "3".
*
I think all er...ahem disc are region free. So it doesn't matter if the playe is region 3 or what....am i correct?

u know Lobsterman shop in SS2?
ESH is at the same row of shoplots of Lobsterman, but at the other end.
if u coming from SS2 police station direction, it will be on your left after u see Mobil on your right, just before a traffic light.

those young salespersons there are very helpfull. they let me to test kao kao (open a brand new one for me to test somemore), even i said i might not be buying it.

last Fri, i bought one of the 2 last units left, so matrix, do act fast!  brows.gif
*
Lobsterman?? I still dun get it. From SS2 policestation, lets say i turn in from the junction to the BP Petrol Station. On left BP and Police Station, on right is Eu Yan Sang. So where do i go from here? I can't remember a Mobil there...is it near the end with the RHB Bank??

stole this from lobsterman's website  tongue.gif

see the "shoplots" where lobsterman is located?
ESH is at the same row of shoplots as lobsterman, but on the other end (towards the most left traffic lights). icon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks man, i found it already. smile.gif

However, the sales assistant there doesn't seem too helpful and when i asked for the SONY 76H, he found one on the floor and told me it's no good coz it's "sensitive".(Whatever that means). Then i asked about the Samsung HD870 then no stock and he's pushing very hard for the LG 298H.

It seems quite strange to me...but i've been to 3 shops and they're all pushing for the LG 298H!!!(including Best Denki which give me some seriously crap reason). Is LG giving a better margin for that model?? doh.gif

Anyway, i found one shop in SS2 selling it only for RM350 against the RM399 for the normal retail price. It's a shop somewhere between LEGEND LCD and the BMB hi-fi shop.

Guys,

I've ordered the 37" Samsung LCD previously, but cancelled it liao coz it's taking too long and found the black constrast isn't very good and color not so vivid for watching DVD. It's good for games, but movies ain't so good. I believe that's the S7 series. The R8 in the shops look much better but also more expensive(and they dun have 37").

Now, i'm eyeing the Toshiba or a Panasonic. My budget is around 4K.

How's the pic quality of these LCD? Which model should i look for?

Just now I went to Courts Mammoth near Wangsa. I ask the idiot salesman there to test DVD movies with the Panasonic. All the the tvs were repeatly showing some idiot Courts Mamooth commercial. The idiot says "the source is connected to same source" or something, basically, saying can't test.

So he expect people to buy a 4k TV without testing?? Then what the heck is all those TV on the wall for?

I left immediately and will never ever bother with Courts again.

I get much better service from Best Denki, Jaya Jusco and even shops from SS2.

Maybe I'll go Best Denki later.

Some of the ahem D9s titles sold here are actually D5 titles recorded on a dual layered disc, I've bought a few and I even compared the bitrates for both, D9 and D5, they were identical but when I bought the original dvd instead, the bitrates were a lot higher. Nowadays, they deceive people by passing D5 rubbish on a D9 disc. Well, when you're free, you can do this experiment, you'll realise that you have been cheated into thinking that the D9 disc you have is supposedly to be of better quality. Nowadays, I also seldom buy those ahem ones unless I can't find that particular titles on an original dvd. RM39.90 to RM59.90 is fine with me if it's a good movie and I'm also hoping that blu-ray and hd-dvd titles will drop below RM80 one day to make them more affordable.
*
99% of ahem is D5 on D9 disc. But i dun think they cheat coz they only sell at D5 ahem disc and they told yu straight away it's D5 on D9. Just put into your PC and you can see most of them around 2G+ to 4GB only. Most D9 will exeed the D5 storage barrier. I think i only have 1 ahem (X-MEN 2) that's truly D9..over 6GB of data. thumbup.gif

Also i believe local ori DVDs(except crap titles nobody wants) are mostly D5 right? Only those imported ones has a full DTS soundtrack and D9 disc.

The design(like BBQ stove) is horrible and SONY tries to shove a BD down our throat and force us to pay a premium when we dun want to.

Luckily, consumers voted with their wallet and now it's down to a more reasonable price...

But i still hate SONY for trying to shove stuff down our throats, when all we want is to play games. I dun think any games use that much space. Some store dummy pad files on the disc to hide SONY's embarrasment....LOL.

Anyway, unless you have a full HD panel and big screen > 40", i dun think BD is worthwhile.

QUOTE(stacko @ Jan 6 2008, 05:36 PM)
I had the urge to buy a new LCD TV, especially with the fantastic PQ. But after getting more and more information, my urge has died down cos I realised that no matter how good the PQ, it is only achieved with the latest gadgets. You need a BlueRay player playing BlueRay disc or a DVD player with HDMI to enjoy the PQ. But my TV is used daily for Astro and when I saw the PQ of Astro on these LCD TVs, I am disappointed. It's Astro fault with its analog signal, not the TV. In fact I am now more appreciative of my Sony DRC TV which although old tech, produces magnificent Astro PQ even after 6 years of use.
*
Nope. There's very good reason to get an LCD. You don't need BlueRay to enjoy, watching DVD movies in the proper perspective and SIZE is already worth the money. Your 4:3 TV will display movie with the black bars to fit the 16:9 perspective. Even your 4:3 TV is 34", you'll get a very small picture.

Even with the smallest 32" LCD TV, you get a full picture without the black bars(some might still have a small bar due to the not exactly 16:9 perspective like 2:35:1 whatever), but DVD watching will never be the same.

No offence, why does anyone want to watch ASTRO on a 16:9 LCD??? ASTRO is low quality broadcast, canabillized 16:9 -> 4:3 format for the movies, no Dolby Digital, no DTS....in other words...urggh....

ASTRO is only good for watching Wah lai Toi HK dramas...which cheap RM300 China brand TV will do.

While you have some good points - it's not like people are going to put 2 TVs in their living room right?

or keep a cheapo TV around just to watch ASTRO.

BTW - even 'normal' CRT TVs have difference in PQ - so that kind of puts cheap China brand out unless you're not much into PQ lah.

Anyways, for those with LCDs and don't want to have perspective messed up - just go for 4:3 mode lah!!!
*
It does cross my mind...My SONY 29" HDTV ready (yep, it's probably one of the best CRT HDTV around and still kicking) for ASTRO and the LCD in the living room...Since my MCE PC can support both the LCD and CRT same time.(can surf web while watching TV!!)....but it's really a challenging task to find places to fit it in everything....

Anyway, I'm going to Amcorp Mall to search for some China D9 ahem this weekend...ha-ha...maybe try to buy one SPEEDY DVD and try also...how to check bit rate by the way?

I get what you mean, RM59.90 still ain't cheap considering the rise in cost of living nowadays. It's hard to convince people to fork out RM59.90 for an original dvd these days unless it's a super duper good movie.
There are ahem D9 dvds that exceed the 5GB barrier but giving you D5 picture quality. Very easy, throw in tons of trailers, rubbish music videos and there you have it, 7GB of space, you might be fooled that it's a D9 movie but the extra space has been filled up with these rubbish materials, the actual movie itself is just a D5 movie which has been compressed. You'll see artifacts on the movie itself. A fine example is the movie 28 Weeks Later. I bought the original copy instead.
Yup, you're right and furthermore, uncensored pulak. Finas has finally tired of censoring movies nowadays.  rclxm9.gif
That's true and if not, we always go for used blu-ray movies. My friend bought a used copy of Spider-Man 3 blu-ray at RM80, that's even cheaper than the original dvd sold in Malaysia. Value for money in my opinion.
Wah, what did Sony do to you? Don't forget that the PS3 sells cheaper than the XBOX 360 and the blu-ray playback is an additional bonus. If you have played games like Unreal Tournament III and Resistance Fall Of Man on the PS3, the extra space is indeed useful and game developers can use the extra space for some sweet PCM 7.1 sound. If not, a game like Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey on the XBOX 360 will span from 3 to 4 dual layered dvds but with blu-ray, one disc is all that you need. The extra space is useful here especially when you're talking about lengthy next gen games like RPGs.

You don't need a full HD panel to enjoy blu-ray movies, a normal widescreen computer monitor with 1:1 pixel mapping is already enough to see the difference at 720p.

Lastly, there's nothing with the design, it looks sexy what. I'm sure Bro rx330 will agree with me. The PS3 looks futuristic, the XBOX 360 is an oddball looking console.
*
Ha-ha...hated SONY ever since they launched PS3 with crazy price...but it's cheaper now, but i still hate them!!! Anyway, the games sucks...my relative has one...nice graphics, but same boring gameplay...and i can't think of any RPG on PS3 worthplaying now.

How to check bit rate of the movie and know it's compression rate?

I wonder why local pirates wanna compress the thing since there's so much space on the D9..

Just bought a couple of ori DVD at Speedy just now:
(1) Matrix Reloaded - i dun really like this movie but it's only RM19.90!!! Inside got 2 discs somemore! How to resist! btw, this disc dun have DTS, only DD5.1, but the video bitrate (i know how to check already, just use Nvidia decoder) is between 4Mbit to 8Mbit. thumbup.gif I check my other fake DVD 9 disc is only around 2Mbit rate. Except or a few true D9 disc (Die Hard 3 - 8Gb+) has the same bitrate range and true DTS track around 750kbit rate.

(2) Resident Evil 2 - haven't test yet, but has 2 versions inside, Widescreen and 4:3 version. Only RM19.90 and i haven't watch this movie yet.

(3) Edward Scissorhands - a classic Tim Burton's movie which i've watched on VHS tape many years ago. Only RM29.90. This movie is worth every cents!!! Now i can enjoy the widescreen version!!!

Errr ........ if you didn't know, the PS3 has the most RPG games, not on the XBOX 360, certainly not on the Wii as well. PS2 no need to say, it has the most RPGs but then, it's still a Sony.  nod.gif  So, I don't really see your point of argument here. All consoles offer the same type of gameplay except for Wii, why bash Sony and not Microsoft? The game sucks? I don't think so, try playing Uncharted, Unreal Tournament III, Heavenly Sword, etc ....... it's not that bad actually.
*
PS3 has most RPG?? doh.gif But any worth playing?? PSX is best. PS2 was ok. But PS3 has not much RPG to shout about. Look let's drop the PS3 talk here. Anyway. I've given up gaming long time ago, i'm not interested in PS3,XBOX,WII or whatever now. If you wanna talk about that, go to console forum. Stick to topic please.
