Just bought the Sony NS708. Tested it and I was totally satisfied with it. Compared it with my Philips 5986K and there are pros and cons between this 2 players.

Sony NS708
- better design and build quality
- boot up & reads dvd faster
- it can read some of the minor scratched dvd that even my 5986K are having trouble reading them (shocking!)
- comes with optical input
- more function to play with in system menu
- nicer remote control
- lack of usb port is a turn off
- bundled with cheapo looking HDMI cable

Philips 5986K
- cheaper compared to NS708
- abysmal boot up time
- comes with USB port
- bundled with Giraffe HDMI cable (gold plated)
- limited function in system menu, HDMI audio output bug (setting auto reset everytime I power off)

Surprisingly I called up Legend SS2 in the afternoon and was quoted RM450 for NS708. Quoted at Desa lowyat RM499 but no stock. In the end, went to Best Denki Summit and bought it for RM399 only. Very very satisfied with it so far.

I couldn't tell a difference between those 2 players, I've tested Die Hard 4 and some Jazz musics and both sounded almost the same to me. But there are more audio settings available for you to tweak for the Sony. Ohh btw, I missed out something, 5986K only upscales to 1080i but NS708 to 1080p. Some DVD definitely looks a bit sharper on my Samsung 40" 1080p. The new 5996K has 1080p upscale too, as well as MP3 ripping function. Pop in an audio cd and a thumbdrive, it rips the audio cd to mp3 format and store in in the thumb drive. Excellent addon I would say. thumbup.gif

kianwee, that's not correct. The Philips does upscale to 1080P on the HDMI.

Unfortunately it won't play mpeg2 files properly natively.

Did you notice the 1080p is greyed out? It is even greyed out on my FULL HD 1080p connected via Monster HDMI cable. That is why I said it doesn't upscale to 1080p. The option is there, but unselectable.

It is greyed out because in this picture, it was connected to an 1080i HD Ready Plasma. When I connect it to a Full HD 1080P LCD, the 1080P is enabled, and then it becomes selectable. I use the supplied Giraffe HDMI cable, no problems at 1080P.

dude, there is a bug for that philips, it was mentioned in avforum, the earlier revision cannot display 1080p properly, they fix it with firmware update at a later revision....btw my 5986 lens is slowly become more sensitive, very picky on media now.

Thanks for that clarification. I guess mine has the latest firmware then, and so has no problem displaying 1080P.

That was a thing of the past now, my three Sony dvd players, 575, 76H and the latest 708 all play those lanun dvds perfectly even those poor quality China mari ones too. I'm not kidding, try testing one yourself with your own disc. You'll be surprised.

My situation is like this, i just bought a new HDMI Dvd player (Toshiba) and it came with free hdmi cable (cheap one), when i try to play movie (Dvd9) with my lcd tv (Sony Bravia) using both 1080i and 720P, i quite disappointed with the picture quality (distortion and a bit blur).
But then i changed the cable to Composite Video Cable (Yellow, red, white) instead of Hdmi cable, walla the picture quality is quite good now, without distortion and more sharpness compare when using with the cheap hdmi cable. How in the hell the old generation cable like composite cable can produce better picture quality than hdmi cable. It just make no sense to me, but then i think the cause maybe from the cheap hdmi cable that came free with my dvd player.

After this i think i want to try use it with the expensive hdmi cable like monster or gold plated hdmi cable. Is it true picture quality can be better if i use the gold plated one?

Some upscaling dvd players don't upscale that well via hdmi and the Bravia's upscaling performance is better than most entry level upscaling dvd players, you might be surprised. Try using component if you're Toshi is not up to the shop, let your LCD upscale it for you.

I've tested both Monster 400 and RM20 cheapo gold plated HDMI cable from PA, there are slight improvement in image quality noticable only on my 40" 1080p panel. Tested it on my old 32" Samsung, no difference at all. But the price I pay for the Monster cable, you can get a NS708 with change for San Francisco Steakhouse.
