Try again as it gets closer, that's when CX will tend to open up availability.

Everything from now till Feb 2017 will be slim pickings due to the AA devaluation rush. Only hope on CX especially is for them to release last minute inventory.
*
No last minute tickets available too, I've checked this weekend and next weekend. Might get lucky with the other US destinations (SFO, LAX, ORD, BOS) but if not I'll just cancel the trip biggrin.gif

In all honesty I can't complain about AAdvantage members booking up seats, I did the same as well biggrin.gif

There's First available on a random search i did  brows.gif

But normally i wouldnt take F on the HKG-LAX since that sector time is at 12hrs vs the other way around which is about 15hrs.
*
Yeah I do see F once in awhile, but trying to save up my miles for that potential SQ F trip with the family. I'm down to my last 500k or so miles. 220k return on F is almost 2 people flying on PEY. biggrin.gif

Anyway I do see JL availability in PEY and sometimes J, might try my luck with some of the lesser knowns OW partners, Gulf Air or Finnair or just wait for CX last minute availability next weekend...

Have you tried ex-BKK? Close-in redemptions out of KUL really suffer because we don't really have the same volume as BKK/SIN...

Found J on BKK-HND/NRT-ORD + ORD-NRT-BKK on JL. 12th-17th.
*
Thanks, actually the limitation for the dates I want (May 13/14/15 return May 20/21/22/23) the limit is almost always the HKG-JFK/EWR segment for CX. The handful of available dates are via YVR and I don't have a canadian visa.

Might have to switch dates for this trip biggrin.gif

I'm sure most of you would've received the email already, but Krisflyer now allows redemption on SQ Premium Economy beginning May 24th 2016

https://www.singaporeair.com/en_UK/sg/ppscl...tnews/PEY-annc/

Redemption seems to be almost as expensive as business for some routes. I wonder what availability is like...

I just checked and apparently you only need 45,000 EM and 78,000 EM for Business Class and First Class respectively.

Reality is, how often someone intend to visit UK by next month and still haven't booked his or her flight ticket by now?
*
Haha I do and very frequently too, not to London but to NYC. I typically redeem my flights 2-3 weeks in advance for the most part, taking advantage of last minute availability on CX J or F. Have booked SQ F last minute too. Had to cancel this week's trip to NYC because of lack of availability, thanks to fellow AAdvantage members biggrin.gif

Kinda tempting to do KUL-LHR on MH F, 78k miles one way plus ~RM700 fees only!

QR
SIN-DOH-ATH (transit at Doha so this is consider 1 transfer & 1 stopover?)
5696 Miles

Plan is to get to Santorini, then take a flight to Rome which I will visit a few cities by train and end up in Milan. Take a budget airline flight from Milan to London. Since my last stop was ATH & next departure from LHR, so considered 1 open-jaw?
*
Yes ATH/LHR would be considered 1 stopover and 1 open jaw. Don't forget the somewhat high APD in LHR when flying out on J/F.

QUOTE(bearbear @ May 19 2016, 12:23 AM)
AA
LHR-LAX (1 stopover; 1 open jaw?)
5456 Miles

Read some review and here that the BA A388 J suck? Seems AA's 77w is a better option?

Plan in US: LAX-LAS-SFO

CX
SFO-HKG (1 stopover)
HKG-SIN (1 stopover)
6927+1587 Miles

TOTAL 19,666 Miles (140k AM redemption)

Can i utilize LAX-LAS domestic flight into my plan? (236 Miles) This will bring the miles to just below 20k in total and total 5 stopovers. Then I just need to get another flight myself from LAS-SFO

Appreciate your comment especially seat availability issues
*
I personally would not do LAX-LAS with all the hassles of TSA. If you're up for it, do a road trip LAX-LAS-SFO. I've done it twice already and would do it again! You will need a car ideally in Los Angeles anyway, unless you're happy to pay for Uber everywhere which can get expensive. One way car rentals aren't all that expensive.

Also how are you doing the mileage calculations? gcmap, webflyer and expertflyer all will give slightly different amounts, the only number that's valid is CX of course biggrin.gif but at 19,666 miles you're far too close to the 20k limit and might not be able to squeeze that domestic flight in.

Good luck and have fun!

How many days would you reckon is ideal for road trip for LAX-LAS-SFO? cause from google map total driving for both trips would be like 12 hours.
*
Actual driving time as you've calculated is roughly 12 hours, 4-5 for LAS-LAX and 7-8 for LAX-SFO

Las Vegas to Los Angeles is a big empty desert, not so much to see even if you follow the historic Route 66. However the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam are both within driving distance of Las Vegas. Several ghost towns around the area too.

There are a few ways to go from Los Angeles to San Francisco. One way is Highway 1 aka Pacific Coast Highway, the other is the inland route that you can take towards Redwood National Park, Reno, Yosemite, Sequoia/Kings Canyon, Death Valley etc.

I've done both routes, first time took 3 weeks, second time we spent about 2 weeks although both times we spent several days in the big cities as well.

Thanks, i only plan maybe a week to 10 days in US thus was thinking of flight between the cities to minimize rushing here and there.

You have experience redeeming CX from SFO or LAS to HKG? Would it be difficult? The popular route is JFK?
*
If you don't have the time then definitely go for the domestic flights. I personally enjoy the road trips but it's not for everyone plus it does take time.

I last did HKG-SFO and LAX-HKG in December 2014, my last flight on CX last October was to EWR/JFK directly. LAX seems easier to get simply because there are 5 flights daily compared to 2 from SFO. I got my LAX-HKG-KUL on J about a month out, was on JL J (SAN-NRT) when I booked 6 months out.

Hi Tishaban, sorry to reply to such an old post from you. I'm curious, I used to have a SSN when I was a student in the US 15 years ago (since I was working part time for the university) but I can't find my SSN anymore. Do you know a way for me to get the SSN back? I often travel to the US to meet customers but don't have a working visa (just a business visa B-1). Is there anyway I can ask to find out my old social security number next time I'm there?
*
Sorry I honestly don't know how to look up a SSN. Back in the day, some universities used SSN as the student ID number so it could be on your transcript possibly. Otherwise google up some options?

Also where can i get an estimated tax amount for my redemption?
*
You should be able to get a rough estimate from ITA Matrix. For example your first leg is roughly S$300 per person YQ + fees while your second leg is more than €500 per person YQ + fees

The trick is to figure out which airline will hit you with YQ and which won't. I think QR and BA does both on Asia Miles, so you're already looking at quite a large chunk to pay up for that segment of your flight already. The rest should be minimal.

How tough is the UK border? I barely go to the UK in my travels.

Are you in SIN? This SC is mad, annual fee cannot waive at $600 and return you 35k miles only now!!

Thanks for the info bearbear, I'm not in SIN, gave up my PEP some time back. Some of those options aren't so bad, Malaysian banks aren't competitive enough yet or competitive in a different way I guess.

Yes, in the US they have much better signing bonus but the miles they get per dollar spent is usually lower than what we can get in Malaysia with Maybank 2 premier for example (usually the maximum I've seen is around 2 miles per dollar spent)
*
So the optimal solution is to sign up for US cards for their signing bonus, and use Maybank Premiere cards for daily spend? biggrin.gif

Best of both worlds rclxms.gif

Do I also earn miles when I buy ticket for my Family members? Or only applicable to the person flying? Cos I thought if all combine together will earn faster.
*
You earn miles/points various ways.

1. credit card - you earn no matter who you buy tickets for, as long as it's in your credit card

2. flying - only the person whose name is on the ticket and is flying will earn miles

So unfortunately no, only the person flying will earn miles and you cannot typically pool miles.

With British Airways, you can create a Household account and then combine miles from different family members to redeem awards. British Airways award chart is not very good though most of the time but there are some sweet spots. One good thing about British Airways is that it's relatively easy to get silver with them which gives you access to Oneworld lounges if you fly premium economy or business (and oneworld airlines often have sales for business).
*
Yep I was aware of BA Avios family miles, but for krisflyer there's no way unfortunately. I've had family members left with just a few thousand miles in their account, not enough to do anything.

The main thing though is that it only makes sense to be loyal to brands and care about where you credit your miles if you travel above 50k per year in premium economy or higher. If not, you won't really be able to get status anyway and the number of miles you'll have saved up won't really give you much. At least though, both of those frequent flyer program (BA and Aegean) do not expire the miles as long as you have some activity whereas krisflyer will expire miles after 3 years regardless of activity
*
I think this is a key point. I used to fly a lot and was above to get status but with just 1 long haul and maybe 2 medium haul flights per year now it's not worth trying to chase and get status or to even collect points on any specific airlines. I'll survive with my card points for the time being.

want to check.. i did a mileage search for KUL - HKG - AKL and the mile distance from two sites is around 7250 - 7265 miles per way. On Enrich table, category 5 redemption tops out at 7200 and goes to category 6 from 7201 onwards.

is it possible to appeal to them to keep at category 5? lol. diff by 50 miles the miles jump up to 6,000 per person.
*
I'm not sure you can, most things are computerized and it'll probably require approval to get through.

I'm assuming you're flying CX/MH using Enrich? Dragon Air has PEN-HKG and PEN-HKG-AKL is slightly less than 7,200 miles so maybe that is one option? You could do the KUL-PEN separately biggrin.gif

Cathay transferring their KUL-HKG route to Dragonair.

That sucks for me, as I can no longer use Alaska Miles to redeem on this sector since KA is not part of the network.

Looks like back to AA miles then.
*
Yeah I read that as well. I had hopes to use up my Alaska Miles in CX J/F in the future, will have to do it sooner rather than later it looks like...

Alaska redemption rates on CX may change as well, it's the one bright spot in the whole FF world right now. Just hope they don't pull another Emirates fiasco.

is there any credit card that have good redemption rates for Asia Miles?
Currently am using MBB 2cPremier. But i do have quite a substantial amount of transaction every month on utilities & gov dept transaction. For these transaction, MBB only giving 1 or 0 points per RM spend.

Currently charging utilities and gov spending (anything less than 2x points on MBB) to HLB Mach Sig. However, it only transfer to EM which i plan to stop already considering the devaluation of miles every other week...
*
Check out the American Express cards ie. the ones not having the Maybank brand. Most people in Malaysia don't even know these exist biggrin.gif

They used to provide 2-5x Membership Rewards per RM spent, not ideal since it's RM3k-6k per 1k miles but they do transfer to Asia Miles (and Etihad/Krisflyer/etc)
