Only the Ivy League MBA provide you a somewhat 'automatic' upgrade. Even then a lot depends on you as an individual. Take my advise. Don't blindly do a MBA just because it sounds nice to have. Most Malaysians have the 'cert collection mentality' whereby they love to collect education certs without a definite career strategy plan. That's why you will see many of those who obtained MBA's are no better off than before they started. Personally, I have yet to see anybody who has benefited directly from a MBA here in Malaysia. Its always a mix of factors with a MBA being a part of it.

A MBA is not an automatic passport to higher salaries. Most MNC's in Malaysia adopt a 'good to have, but not essential' approach to MBA's hence why career progression and numeration benefits don't come automatically. You need to identify how a MBA is going to assist you in moving up the ladder. Don't be confused with lateral moves. You don't want a MBA to only provide you a lateral move. You want to move up the ladder and sometimes a MBA may not be the answer.

Doing a MBA especially the better ones like Lancaster and Strathclyde, involves a lot of hard work. Its gonna take away a lot of your family and leisure time for the next 2 years. Attending classes is not difficult. Its doing the assignments and preparing for exams which is the tough part. You want to ensure that doing a MBA is worth your while in future. The last thing you want is to do a MBA and realise later that it doesn't benefit you in your career path. Doing a MBA is not about getting a piece of paper. Its about a complete mind change and equipping yourself with a business skill set. And there is a gulf of a difference between mid tier MBA's like Lancaster and Strathclyde with the high end programs like INSEAD, etc.

So the most important question you should be asking is how do you intend to use the MBA to boost your career. The answer won't come from Lancaster or Strathclyde. It comes from you and your discussions with your management. Most candidates miss this very crucial part.

also the connection you make in your business schools. top tier schools attract top tier people and is the best place to enhance and enlarge your social circle.

imagine working on a project with a ceo of a fortune 500 company in a top school like Insead vs working with a freshie with <3 years of working exp in a 2 or 3 tier mba program. makes a world of difference no?
