Ultimately, IMHO, you would want an MBA for 1 (or more) of 3 reasons:
- Knowledge - Recognition (meaning is the cert worth its weight in gold/silver/platinum/unobtainium? - Networking & interaction The decision on where to go should ultimately be determined by the above, and limited by ur funding resources. If I were to want to build a good network in corporate Malaysia, I would go to a place with reasonable recognition but excellent networking potential. E.g. if I want to get more medium to high level police kang tao, I would go to USM - that's where that crowd goes (actually u could also go to a golf course, but that's for another thread). If I wanted the recognition, I would sign up to sum place prestigious and well recognised, sell my kidneys and my left nut for the admission fees and eat dirt for the next 12 months. If I wanted purely knowledge, it doesn't really matter where I go. But really, MBA is an experience, not just lectures. The right crowd really helps facilitate learning and exposure. Based on these 3 points, u should be able to narrow down what's right for u. |

QUOTE(Knight_2008 @ Feb 1 2012, 09:39 PM) i disagree. Getting the information straight from the institutions on the whether their mba is recognised is pointless. Recognition depends on the general perception of others, not the institutions themselves. They would definitely said their mba programme is good, or else why would they be providing the programme? Aisey mang, since when did we EVER trust business/salesmen completely? (this coming from a guy who buys krap on lolyat all the time hehehe)In addition, recognition in terms of who have accredited it will not be informational enough. Harvard is not triple accredited whereas henley is, so which school would be better in term of career prospect? This proves that general perception of a MBA's worth trumps any kind of accreditation or recognition that an institution claims to have. With business skools, as with businesses, u need due diligence la. Recognition in this case is as u said la, depends on who ur gonna be flashing ur cert to - ur future boss, colleagues, family, friends, business principal, mistress, pet dog, employee, client bla bla bla....That's what u have rankings like FT and The Times for, but hey why trust rankings? Talk to individuals and get actual opinions. |

QUOTE(gc68 @ Feb 3 2012, 10:28 PM) Hi I completed my MBA about 11 years ago. Just got back from Jogja and saw this, thx for the input mate. Looks like useful stuff, will check it out. Before I did it, I went thru a lot of research and subsequently published the course list on the web. That old site is still there : http://netmba.tripod.com/ Although the MBA list is not there anymore, the site contains articles on why and how to choose your MBA. Do check it out. I had also uploaded completed, Grade A assignments in PDF format for MBA students to refer to. And if you ask me whether the MBA has helped in my career. The answer is yes. It has helped to be a better manager and leader, that in turn has helped my career advancement. Please keep in mind that MBA is not an instant passport to riches (unless you're getting yours from Harvard or Wharton or something in the same league). When you say "yes, the MBA helped my career", what's the context like? For example, were u shifting from technical to administrative (meaning like were u an engineer looking to get into the administrative line rather than operations?) Was it because there was a sort of glass ceiling that u had hit in ur career, and u needed the paper certification to move further? |

BOS is something very academic la...u dont get a lot of buy in from the major industrial players on it, at least not from my experience. I'm doubtful as to the worth of the BOS label. But if the program has good ratings and u can get great feedback from participants, give it a try.

Why ppl take up an MBA always boils down to 3 things:
- The knowledge - The value of the cert - The kang tau That's it. Some ppl want to learn. Some want the credibility, sellability and mileage of an FT rated Top 10 school. Some want to widen their reach. If any of the above means something to the individual, an MBA is justified. Otherwise, its just kindling. |

Hi all, in your opinion, how significant is this AACSB? Would it mean anything in terms of UPM's MBA course ranking and recognition?

Well, this is an interesting angle that I never considered - the kind of crowd that the program attracts i.e. the kind of classmates you would have.

QUOTE(Materazzi @ Oct 28 2012, 08:35 PM) I still dont know what is the useful of MBA in networking? I think only 1% case? I dont think they will offer u a job right? Become their subordinate? I think in work should divide between ptofessional and friend? So far i never see any good networking in MBA? Maybe that's western culture not Asian though. Mate, if u still cant see it....nvm |

QUOTE(Ahmad Mie @ May 3 2018, 05:02 PM) Hi all, The way i see it, ppl take MBAs for one or more of these three main reasons:I've read this topics for the past 60+ pages or so, took me 5 days to complete in between work...LOL Anyway, I'm in dilema right now and need insights from bigger audience to these 2 fundamental questions; 1. Should I go for MBA? Yes, I want more money! I'm currently a Senior Manager in MNC, 17 yrs of work experience, earning gross of MYR 17K/month...and I'm travel a lot..so , if plus travel allowance, earning ~MYR 20k/month. Is MBA will secure me more money...greedy..hahaha 2. But joke on greedy thing aside...as matter a fact...I'm incline to go for MBA because I want to challenge my brain after 17 years finish degree. Hence, I have voice down to two options for part-time MBA; - Lancaster by Sunway (fee 60K) or - Nottingham U MY (fee 60k) Please advise.. Btw...my age is 40, my vision is simple..I want to retire as Director/CEO...and I'm serious 1. The paper qualification (and the value attached to it) 2. The networking opportunities 3. The sheer knowledge Based on ur explanation, u have experience, ur well paid and ur obviously doing something right with your career to be able to get to where u are in ur industry. So. What is the main value u wish to draw from ur mba? The prestige (and possible salary hike) that comes with the cert? If that were the case, I'd say spend some dough and sign up to the best, most renowned, most recognized school of business u can afford (both in terms of money and time, since i see that u r keen on part time). That solution may not necessarily be limited to MY. U could opt for Singapore too (NUS or even the INSEAD branch there). INSEAD is pricey sure, but we both know that cert is going to be worth more than its weight in gold. Anyways, good luck on ur choice man, all the best. |
