You still have time to register for Malaysia's leading MBA to be held tomorrow evening (10th June) or alternatively on the 27th June. Watch out for further details on our road show visiting Penang later this month. Call 03 74918701 or visit www.sunway.edu.my/mba

Graduates of the Sunway university MBA dual award programme receive a degree award from both Sunway and Lancaster Universities. Lancaster University was ranked 50th in the 2015 Financial Times Global MBA ranking and consistently performed at a high level. Whats more with our revised pricing and financial assistance we are better value. Take the challenge...come along and ask us the tough questions!

Kind regards
Prof Brian

Prof Brian,

I have attended the MBA preview on 24th May actually.

Now am looking around to compare, and as questions comes about, I will inquire with Sunway again.

Thanks.

Another General question, does anyone have experience in which the difference in having a MBA make a change to their current position, such as added responsibilities or position/ranking (recognize by employer) or increase in salary.

Looking at the Top MBA Schools.

I have been wondering where they get the number for the salary increase. If this is going to happen here locally in Malaysia.

Good day Prof. Brian,

I have several question here regarding the courses lecture.

- Are all (100%) of the class delivery to be taught by academic staff from Lancaster University?

- Assignment and coursework to be supported by Lancaster lecturers adjunct with Sunway lecturers?

- Workshops if any, to be taught by academic staff from Lancaster?

- Is there a difference in the MBA masters received? Would there be a ranking similar to the undergraduate degree for example 1st class, 2nd class and et cetera?

The next upcoming preview is on the 27 June at 12pm-2.30pm, are there any further previews after this date as I have a friend who would be interested to attend.

Thanks.

Regards,
Lin

Only the Ivy League MBA provide you a somewhat 'automatic' upgrade. Even then a lot depends on you as an individual. Take my advise. Don't blindly do a MBA just because it sounds nice to have. Most Malaysians have the 'cert collection mentality' whereby they love to collect education certs without a definite career strategy plan. That's why you will see many of those who obtained MBA's are no better off than before they started. Personally, I have yet to see anybody who has benefited directly from a MBA here in Malaysia. Its always a mix of factors with a MBA being a part of it.

A MBA is not an automatic passport to higher salaries. Most MNC's in Malaysia adopt a 'good to have, but not essential' approach to MBA's hence why career progression and numeration benefits don't come automatically. You need to identify how a MBA is going to assist you in moving up the ladder. Don't be confused with lateral moves. You don't want a MBA to only provide you a lateral move. You want to move up the ladder and sometimes a MBA may not be the answer.

Doing a MBA especially the better ones like Lancaster and Strathclyde, involves a lot of hard work. Its gonna take away a lot of your family and leisure time for the next 2 years. Attending classes is not difficult. Its doing the assignments and preparing for exams which is the tough part. You want to ensure that doing a MBA is worth your while in future. The last thing you want is to do a MBA and realise later that it doesn't benefit you in your career path. Doing a MBA is not about getting a piece of paper. Its about a complete mind change and equipping yourself with a business skill set. And there is a gulf of a difference between mid tier MBA's like Lancaster and Strathclyde with the high end programs like INSEAD, etc.

So the most important question you should be asking is how do you intend to use the MBA to boost your career. The answer won't come from Lancaster or Strathclyde. It comes from you and your discussions with your management. Most candidates miss this very crucial part.

Hey Cybermaster98,

Thank You for the advice.

I do have to agree with what you have said, my initial intention was more on what I can get out of doing the MBA. However, after speaking with several people who have the experience either in the MBA itself or actual managerial post or owner of business, I realise that MBA does not immediately provide what we matter the most (Although we would like it to in higher salary or positions), but it is about self growth and knowledge, so that we know how to do better in our life and work. The grooming is what matters, and the benefits of MBA will come along as we grow along.

My understanding is that MBA provide an opportunity to learn things on a different level than non managerial posts, see things differently, and train on our decision making and to act accordingly.

It is also for networking and opportunity to work in a group of people of similar direction in life, and to learn from each other.

Thats why its important to see who enrols for the MBA you plan to take. For INSEAD, Ivy league etc, those are at a minimum high corporate performers, businessmen, and rich man sons. You will gain much from the network.

My friend took MBA with a local university and most of the student population are the 'cert chasers'/4-5k income (no offence) takungzai. Just sayin'

Plus, it will give you most benefit if you run you own business where your learnings will multiply your biz income; i.e. you get richer where it counts after MBA. Or if you work in a corporate environment where you as a high performer has chance to get stock options- you improve the biz your stock value goes up. (STATEMENT- I fully believe that the course contents of MBA are practicable)

You will not get much benefit if you work in chinaman company (outright refusal to recognize) or MNC which are sweatshops in disguise (e.g. electronics industry in Penang).

I previously loved the idea of having MBA but in the end I took some free modules from www.coursera.org by Wharton. Two things will prevent me from actually doing MBA:

1. I realized I do not have the interest to spend my free time studying.
2. I am a Malaysian man- I.e. no point work so hard and no benefit. I may have the skills to improve the biz but if I am not a own biz owner or identified by company as a 'fast track to corporate board' employee, I wont want to apply the skills to the company.

Your mileage may vary. Sorry for being cynical.

Haha, Kaiserwulf,

In a certain light, what you say is actually the case. Most MBA (Let's not discuss where) would be salary man. That's no doubt, even myself a salary man. However, I believe it does not matter on whether the current you are of no rich or highly paid nor businessman. It is the attitude that matter more, if you are doing a MBA from a valid point (for self improvement, it's also a gamble) rather than for certification collection, you would try to learn and think in the right way as you go. Hence, if the people you are doing the MBA with are at least of this attitude, you would gain some would be powerful people in the future (potentially of course, it's a chance).

I believe in order to gain something, we must work for it. No doubt this would spend a lot of time and resource for the 2 years period, however, only we can tell if it is worth it, either along the way, or only at the end of it.

1) Agree with either Chinaman or disguise MNC/environment, hence forth would an MBA help you to go and search/identify a better environment for your future career?
2) What if, the aforementioned MBA graduate uses the knowledge in overseas, for example, Singapore, Australia or UK/US? Anyone who have/had the experience to share?

It's alright to be critical and cynical, so you would see the condition in a what if it's no good condition. But of course don't stop if you are keen to try, at least in your experience, you would not wonder if you have otherwise did it.

Don't even want to think about how much the tuition fees would go up the following year (I referred to the Notthingham fees of 10% increase since last year, with currency weakening it would be worst).

Regards,
Lin
