Hi all,

I've read this topics for the past 60+ pages or so, took me 5 days to complete in between work...LOL

Anyway, I'm in dilema right now and need insights from bigger audience to these 2 fundamental questions;

1. Should I go for MBA? Yes, I want more money! I'm currently a Senior Manager in MNC, 17 yrs of work experience, earning gross of MYR 17K/month...and I'm travel a lot..so , if plus travel allowance, earning ~MYR 20k/month. Is MBA will secure me more money...greedy..hahaha

2. But joke on greedy thing aside...as matter a fact...I'm incline to go for MBA because I want to challenge my brain after 17 years finish degree. Hence, I have voice down to two options for part-time MBA;
- Lancaster by Sunway (fee 60K) or
- Nottingham U MY (fee 60k)

Please advise..

Btw...my age is 40, my vision is simple..I want to retire as Director/CEO...and I'm serious

1. It all depends on the company you are attached, but MBA sounds reasonable for you from what you have described.

2. Both universities listed are reasonable. So perhaps you can attend their open days to understand each offering better.

Thanks for your prompt opinions, appreciate it!

Well, my company did not put any MBA requirements for promotion - from what I've heard, not much help. Here, it is who you know, not what u know.
My plan is once obtain MBA, chow for Director level..... competition is tough here.

Yes, imagine this - MBA from Nottingham University, UK - sounds good when I put in my resume/linkedln right?...hahaha

The way i see it, ppl take MBAs for one or more of these three main reasons:

1. The paper qualification (and the value attached to it)
2. The networking opportunities
3. The sheer knowledge

Based on ur explanation, u have experience, ur well paid and ur obviously doing something right with your career to be able to get to where u are in ur industry. So. What is the main value u wish to draw from ur mba? The prestige (and possible salary hike) that comes with the cert? If that were the case, I'd say spend some dough and sign up to the best, most renowned, most recognized school of business u can afford (both in terms of money and time, since i see that u r keen on part time). That solution may not necessarily be limited to MY. U could opt for Singapore too (NUS or even the INSEAD branch there). INSEAD is pricey sure, but we both know that cert is going to be worth more than its weight in gold. Anyways, good luck on ur choice man, all the best.

First off, I would say go for it. It's never too late to continue or start studying for a course.

Secondly, in my experience and from those of my friends and colleagues, MBAs tend not to be a good investment unless you enter one of those very reputable but expensive MBA programs. Unfortunately, universities providing MBA courses are now a dime a dozen, and there are many people who have MBAs from various universities. To stand out, you need to have an exceptional MBA, which means from the top MBA universities. This Economist report gives the maths for such courses:
QUOTE
RETURN on investment is a vital consideration for MBA candidates picking a programme, particularly given cost of courses. Students do not want to spend upwards of $100,000 on an MBA, only to find that their paypacket barely increases at the other end of it. An MBA at the best schools can have a multiplier effect on graduates’ salaries. To rank business schools’ ability to boost a student’s income, The Economist takes into consideration two data points: the overall average salary, excluding bonuses, that MBA graduates receive when they re-enter the workforce (which makes up the majority of the weighting) and the percentage increase in post-MBA salary compared with candidates’ pre-MBA income (see methodology).

In our ranking, HEC Paris came top of the pile for boosting graduates’ earnings. Post-MBA salaries were 153% higher than on entering the programme, the second-highest of all schools surveyed. And at $121,080, the average post-MBA salary was also in the top 10. But one school, placed second overall for its improvement in salary, stands out: Michigan State University’s Eli Broad College of Business. Students there earn a smidgen over $100,000 when they enter the workforce after graduation—a pretty standard amount. But because of the demographic from which the school takes its MBA candidates, that is 238% increase on pre-MBA income.

Stalwarts in such rankings, including Harvard, Stanford and MIT, stand firm in the top 15. North America dominates the listings for supercharging salaries: 11 of the top 15 schools outlined below are in the United States. Three (HEC Paris, IESE and IMD) are in Europe, while one school from Asia-Pacific—Macquarie in Australia—rounds out the listings. American exceptionalism still counts for something.

Financial Times MBA ranking also have a column called "Value" which means value for money. However, we need to realize that salary levels in USA/Europe are probably much higher than MY. So we cant compare apples with oranges.

In my opinion, in Malaysia don't need top ranked MBA unless you want to join managment consulting/investment banking or aiming to be C-suite in fortune500 company in Malaysia. Lancaster/Nottingham/Strathclyde/Henley seems good enough as they are ranked and accredited programmes not from kucing kurap university. Ang Mo also recognize and familar with these universities. Also their fees are lower compared to UK campus programme (and in ringgit). And you can still work full time (no forgone earnings) so the ROI seems reasonable.

But if u dont mind studying the GMAT, think you are smart enough can score well, and got money to pay for tuition, want to become elite rise to the very top, then sure go ahead and aim for the top programmes.

Knowledge wise MBA is breadth but not depth, give you holistic view of business, thats why is called Business Admin. For depth, go for specialist Masters (Finance/Analytics/etc). Or you can do both smile.gif

The Top business schools dont have triple accredition. Its only the 2nd tier that give importance to it as a means of getting recognition. In Malaysia, we have very limited choices hence the importance of choosing a triple accredited MBA amongst other reasons. The main reason would of course be the MBA itself and its speciality.

Hi, not sure whether this thread is still active, I guess most of us don't go to forum anymore.
I have decided to start my MBA this year, after working for 10 years and currently would like to learn new skills (especially people management, marketing, strategy) for better career advancement from prestigious university, as I already hold 2 certs from UKM (Bachelor degree in nutrition and post grad dip in dietetics), I hope to obtain oversea cert, but not cap ayam university.

after attended Strathclyde mba preview, after giving few thoughts about it, I still cant make up my mind which uni should I choose.
for me the cons for Stracthclyde would be, their ranking in FT MBA is slipping these few year, almost drop out of 100, the latest is 98, and overall ranking also not high (401-500th according THE), I understand we should look at MBA ranking instead of overall, but by paying big amount 73k, I will really look into value for money.

referring to your opinion, it's clear that Strathclyde is 2nd tier uni (according to ranking) therefore recognition means a lot for them (triple accreditation).

https://www.timeshighereducation.com/studen...usiness-degrees

if we look at best university for business degree according to THE, even UM rank better compared to Strathclyde, rank 301-350th in THE best university, accredited with AMBA, MBA cost 28k, so I really don't see a reason to pay such high price of 73k to study MBA in Strathclyde.

since my main objective is to get oversea MBA degree, my budget max will be around 70k, other options would be Lancaster, and Nottingham, which I see they rank top 100 in business study, and I also wonder whether Monash offer MBA as I didn't see it in their website. so far in my mind, I will think that Nottingham and monash will be a good choice, in terms of value for money.

hope to get more opinion from you and also others who did MBA before, thanks in advance!

Dear all,

I am a graduate in Civil Engineering and have been working as an engineer for the past 8 years. Recently i have been wanting to take MBA due to personal interest in business and management. Although i hope MBA could help in my career progression, but i dont think that will be the case.

Currently i work in Singapore and live in Johor. Travelling to work has taken up big chunk of my time. Hence, i cant really take part time MBA although Edingburg University in Johor Bharu do provides Online MBA. Currently i am keen in signing up HELP University online MBA which cost about 25k.

1. HELP University only have CMI and MQA accreditation. Does it sufficient?
2. Is there any online MBA course that you would recommend?

Now i am having a mindset of looking for a cheap, good, and easy to score MBA online. Which i know is impossible @@

There are many MBA programmes around that fits your criteria. In fact, it is very possible to land these if reputation of the institution is not your prime concern.

Hi - is anyone interested to buy GMAT and admissions prep material? I scored 710 (90th percentile) on the test last year and got admitted to a top M7 b-school in the US.

I'm letting the following books go:

- 2018 GMAT Official Guide + Quant Review and Verbal Review books
- Manhattan Guide books (all Quant and Verbal books + Roadmap)
- Powerscore Critical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension

- MBA Game Plan
- MBA Admissions Guide

All books are unmarked and in good condition. The Manhattan books includes online access to papers and quizzes too. Giving away the whole bundle for an attractive price. PM me if interested and I can share more.
