Helicopter crash in Afghan Southern Helmand province; 1 US soldier killed, 2 wounded

user posted image

QUOTE
KABUL (Pajhwok): One member of the US special forces was killed and two others were wounded in southern Helmand province on Tuesday, the American military said.

The soldier succumbed to the injuries he had suffered during operations near Marja district, US forces Brigadier General Wilson Shoffner said in a statement.

Col. Michael Lawhorn, spokesman for the Resolute Support mission, said: "We can confirm a US helicopter has landed in Marjah, and is experiencing mechanical problems. It was not shot down."

US news channels, including NBC and CNN, reported the troops came under heavy mortar and small-arms fire during a counterterrorism operation. A medical helicopter was hit by mortar fire while it was on the ground during the joint American-Afghan mission.

Meanwhile, the Washington Post reported: “The US casualties come as the restive province has seen an uptick in fighting in recent weeks as Taliban have attempted to regain control of key towns such as Sangin, Marja and Lashkargah.”

Brig. Gen. Shoffner said of the casualties: "We are deeply saddened by this loss. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the families and friends of those involved."

Seoul Increases Combat Readiness After North Korea Test of Hydrogen Bomb

user posted image

QUOTE
Earlier in the day, the South Korean media reported that an earthquake occurred in North Korea near a site previously used for nuclear tests. Seoul said there were indications the strong tremor was man-made, meaning Pyongyang might have carried out a new nuclear test. Later North Korea confirmed it successfully tested a hydrogen bomb.

"North Korea's provocation is in clear violation of Security Council resolutions and a serious challenge to international peace and security," Lim Sung-nam, South Korea's first Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs was quoted by the Yonhap news agency as saying.

This Is How You Make A Hydrogen Bomb

QUOTE
Not only does this video not actually provide a handy step-by-step guide, it’s mostly just providing information that’s already out there in the public sphere.

But even if it did get you one step closer to replicating a device like the premier Ivy Mike shot, you’d still need a whole lot more.

Forget about just obtaining the plutonium necessary for it, Doc Brown. You’d also need a whole bunch of heavy and specialized equipment beyond the scope of your local Home Depot, some more detailed schematics than just the rudimentary diagrams we see here, and also, you’d need some sort of way to figure out how to make FOGBANK.

What is FOGBANK, and why have I bolded it? Hell if I know, or if anyone knows, really. It’s rumored to be an unobtainum-ish aerogel material so ridiculously mysterious that even the US government, the people that invented it, forgot how to do it.

The U.S. Navy Struggles to Keep Hornets Flying While the F-35 Stalls

user posted image

QUOTE
Faced with delays in the adoption of the F-35, the U.S. Navy is trying to keep F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet fighters flying until replacements arrive
QUOTE
The U.S. Navy's F/A-18C Hornets comprise half of the fighter force on a typical Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. These older Hornets, known as "legacy Hornets" to differentiate them from the Super Hornet, were only meant to fly an average 6,000 hours.
QUOTE
Most of the "legacy Hornets" were bought in the 1980s, making them roughly 30 years old.
QUOTE
Now, the last of the legacy Hornets is expected to be retired in 2022, and even that date could be pushed back by delays in the F-35 program
QUOTE
the Navy is planning on extending the service lives of legacy Hornets to 10,000 hours. Although build for 6,000 hours, the airframes have been tested out to 10,000.
QUOTE
The Super Hornet will not be replaced by the F-35 but rather so-called "sixth generation" fighter, the F/A-XX future fighter, to differentiate it from the 5th generation F-35.

Ghana to get Mi-35 helicopter

Jeremy Binnie, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
04 January 2016

The Ghanaian Air Force is in the process of acquiring one Mil Mi-35 assault helicopter, Chief of Air Staff Air Vice Marshal Michael Samson-Oje revealed in his end-of-year message.

Summing up his service's other procurement programmes, AVM Samson-Oje said the new Harbin Z-9EH helicopters were delivered on time in 2015, the acquisition of Embraer Super Tucano turboprops was "far advanced", and that an additional Airbus C295M transport was expected to be delivered in January 2016.

Ghana received four Z-9EHs in September 2015, has ordered five Super Tucanos, and already has two C295s in service.

What Happens When You Shoot a .50 Cal Right Down the Barrel of a Shotgun

QUOTE
I’ve never wondered this but I’m happy to see it actually happen in real life: what happens if a .50 call shot a bullet that went right through a barrel of shotgun barrel? If you aim it perfectly does it just go right through the opposite direction? Could you maybe even use the shotgun after? FullMag sought answers and decided to try it twice. The set up for the shot must’ve been perfect.

Burning Tank Goes Out Of Control, Crushes Houses

Video from Turkey shows a Turkish tank catching fire, going out of control, and crushing houses after being struck by Kurdish rebels in the Cizre district of Şırnak Province in the Southeastern Anatolia Region of Turkey.

The strike on the tank is just out of frame of the video, but the aftermath can be seen in which a burning, then smoldering crewman bails in front of the vehicle and is nearly run over as the tank drives out of control, down a steep bank and through three houses in a residential area.

The Cizre district has been under a constant curfew by the Turkish government for weeks as ongoing military operations aim to route out Kurdish PKK militants. Turkey recently deployed teams of special forces to find and neutralize improvised explosive devices on roadsides and in boobytrapped houses.

It doom from the start

Trying to fit three services with a same frame is ridiculous. It like asking a range rover to run on petrol and also diesel while maintaining efficiency of a diesal engine when using petrol. Confusing and cant find it actual role.

Actually the idea is great but doing 3 at the same time is very taxing.
These would bring 3 times the difficulties in term of developing new tech, software development, coordinating team and so on.
A huge lesson for them to learned since the Vietnam war.
If they developed a single variant at a time they won't suffer so many setback.
Well too ambitious.

YPG set to restore electricity in liberated Tishrin dam – Map update

user posted image

Today, spokesmen of the Kurdish militias ‘Syrian Democratic Forces’ (SDF) and ‘People’s Protection Units’ (YPG) announced they would restore electricity in the Tishrin dam region within the next two months. The area west of the Euphrates river has been heavily bombarded by coalition jets who have assisted Kurdish militias to combat the Islamic State (ISIS); However, many industrial buildings have been left in tatters due to airstrikes launched by the US-led anti-ISIS coalition. Therefore, much regional infrastructure is in desperate need of rebuilding.

A day before Christmas Eve, on the 23rd of December, Kurdish militants loyal to the YPG and SDF launched a massive offensive on the ISIS-held areas along the Euphrates river in the far east of Aleppo governorate. Since launching the offensive, more than 100 villages have been wrestled from ISIS militants who quickly fled the area after their first line of defence collapsed. Remarkably, Kurdish militants also rushed past the Jabal Ask Shaykh Inan mountains, crossed the Tishrin bridge, imposed full control over Tishrin and secured a buffer zone around the town. However, over the past few days, both positions have reached a stalemate.

The only thing that set the program back is the B STOL version. The other version seems OK. No country have ever successfully develop a supersonic VTOL fighter. The closest is the Russian Yak-104. But it was ended along with the Dissolution of Soviet Union.

INTERNATIONAL MILITARY REVIEW – SYRIA, JAN. 5, 2016

On January 4, the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) launched a counter-assault near the Battalion 82 Headquarters inside Sheikh Miskeen in the Dara’a Governorate’s northern countryside. As result the militants took control of a number of building blocks in the town. According to the ground reports, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies control roughly 60 percent of Sheikh Miskeen, including the Battalion 82 HQ building and the main base. Separately, the Syrian forces are advancing at the strategic hilltop of Tal Hamad located between Sheikh Miskeen and Nawa. At the moment, the SAA and its allies haven’t gained any major results there.

The SAA supported by the National Defense Forces (NDF) and took control of the village of Ruweisat Al-Qubayb in the Latakia province after a series of intense firefights with Al-Nusra and the FSA. The Syrian sources argue that 19 militants were killed in these clashes. Additionally, the SAA secured the entire village of Qassab. It was a scene of the clashes past weekend. With Qassab, Burj Al-Qassab, and Ruweisat Al-Qubayb under their control, the Syrian forces are able to advance on the village of Salma located at the Kurdish Mountains.

Last night, the pro-government forces launched an offensive operation in the eastern farms of Marj Al-Sultan in the East Ghouta region. At the moment, the clashes are going in the village of Al-Bilaliyah. Also, the Syrian forces are conducting operations to secure the eastern and western flanks of Marj Al-Sultan. These actions are aimed to build a substantial buffer-zone around the military airfields and the village. The Russian Air Force in Syria is continuing to support the pro-government forces with frequency about 60 sorties every day. The main activity of the Russian warplanes is focused in the provinces of Aleppo, Idlib, Latakia, Raqqa, Homs, Deir ez-Zor and Hama. The ISIS and al Nusra terrorist groups are main targets.

How SUGAR could make stealth jets invisible: Anti-reflective coating made from sucrose conceals aircraft from radar

user posted image

QUOTE
* Hexagonal monolayer creates an efficient anti-reflective coating

* Sucrose undergoes what's known as 'pyrolysis' to create hollow spheres

* Coating achieves near 100% absorption in the band used by military radar

* The material could make future fighter jets much more difficult to detect
