Battle for Sheikh Miskeen intensifies as Islamists counter at Battalion 82 HQ

user posted image

The battle for Sheikh Miskeen in the Dara’a Governorate’s northern countryside is arguably one of the most important battles taking place between the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the Islamist rebels in southern Syria. As of recently, the battle has become the focal point for both sides as they continue to call for reinforcements in order to gain the upper-hand; however, most of the time, it is only temporarily.

On Monday morning, the Islamist rebels of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) launched a counter-assault near the Battalion 82 Headquarters inside Sheikh Miskeen. This attack resulted in the Islamist rebels taking control of a number of building blocks before nightfall dissipated the fighting.

According to a military source at the 5th Armored Division’s Headquarters in Izra’a, the Syrian Arab Army and their allies now control roughly 55-60 percent of Sheikh Miskeen; however, the pro-government forces still control both the Battalion 82 HQ building and the main base.

SAS sniper 'kills Isil suicide bombers from a kilometre' - Telegraph

user posted image

QUOTE
An SAS sniper killed three Islamic State suicide bombers by firing shots from the world's most powerful rifle through a 10inch wall, according to reports.

The marksman, said to have been serving as an adviser to Iraqi forces, fired 30 rounds from a Barrett M82 .50 calibre anti-materiel rifle into a two-storey command post in the city of Ramadi in Iraq.
QUOTE
When it was discovered that the bombers were in the building, several options were considered, including an air strike and a rocket launch, but both were deemed too dangerous to civilians, it has been claimed.

Instead, the sniper based himself in another building around 1,000m away and fired into the command post, almost completely destroying one of its walls.
QUOTE
The Barrett rifle is regarded as the world's most deadly sniper rifle.

The magazine holds up to ten rounds, which can destroy vehicles, light armour and parked aircraft. It can also penetrate brick walls and other solid defences used for cover at a range of up to 1,800 metres.

It can also be used to clear mines and other hidden explosives.

The Russian security chief who just died helped transform one of the country's most feared intelligence agencies

Igor Sergun, the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Russia’s General Staff (GRU), died of unspecified causes at the age of 58
QUOTE
The GRU is Russia’s most important military intelligence department, and is believed to have a vast foreign operative network.
QUOTE
It is also responsible for a range of paramilitary activities as well — including the Spetsnaz
QUOTE
Under Sergun, the GRU regained control of the Spetsnaz and became a crucial instrument of Russian policy. The Spetsnaz were expanded in early 2014 under the pretext of providing additional security for the Sochi Winter Olympics

Ingenious New Non-Lethal Bullet Burns Propellant Inside the Round

user posted image

QUOTE
A new compact, lightweight weapon will stop a target in their tracks from a hundred meters away without harming them. Nicknamed the Pogojet, it's a radical less-than-lethal design from Jeffrey Widder, senior research scientist at Battelle Memorial Institute in Ohio.

The Pogojet —whose official name is the Caseless Telescoping Less-lethal System—is unique in that the propellant burns inside the round, pushing on a piston that propels it forward. The action resembles a pogo stick, hence the name. Once the piston reaches its full extent, the exhaust gases can be vented sideways, so the round continues forward at the same speed, or directed through holes in the base of the round like rocket exhaust to give as much extra kick as required. This is the 'jet' aspect of the Pogojet, which Widder compares to the old 1960s Gyrojet rocket pistol.

"It's like a bee sting. It' s only over a small area, but it is intense enough to be effective."

5 Iranian Weapons of War Saudi Arabia Should Fear

user posted image

QUOTE
Quds Force

While not a weapon per se, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) elite Quds Force is probably the single most effective tool that Tehran could use against the Saudis. Numbering about 15,000 troops, this shadowy special operations force made life miserable for U.S. forces occupying Iraq during Washington’s long stay in that country.
QUOTE
Ballistic Missiles

While Iran’s air force is mostly comprised of obsolete airframes, Tehran still has a potent strike capability in the form of ballistic missiles. Iran has a host of missiles at its disposal including the liquid-fueled Emad, which has a 1,000-mile range. It also has the Shahab family of ballistic missiles. The latest variant, the developmental Shabab-4, could have a range as great as 2,400 miles.
QUOTE
Fast-attack craft

Because Saudi Arabia depends on oil exports to fuel its economy, Iran could attempt to shutdown the Straits of Hormuz or disrupt shipping traffic in the Persian Gulf. Indeed, Iran had made an attempt to do just that during the so-called Tanker Wars of the 1980s.
QUOTE
Ghadir-Class Midget Submarine

Designed to operate in the shallow waters of the Persian Gulf, Iran could use the Ghadir-class mini-subs to attack Saudi shipping and port facilities. The diminutive submarines might also be used to deploy Quds Force commandos into the kingdom’s territory to conduct various special operations missions.  But the vessels—which are fitted with 21-inch torpedo tubes—could also be used to covertly lay mines.
QUOTE
Soumar Cruise Missile

Iran is thought to have developed a new long-range cruise missile called the Soumar with a roughly 1,500-mile range. The weapons may be based on the Russia Kh-55—which Iran might have reverse engineered. However, Tehran does not likely have the technology to replicate the Russian weapon’s engine. But even with an inferior engine sourced from elsewhere, the Iranian weapon could pose a challenge to the Saudis—if it genuinely works.

Why Thailand May Choose Russian T-90 to Replace Ukrainian Tanks

user posted image

QUOTE
In 2011, Thailand issued an order worth $240 million for the purchase of 49 T-84 tanks of Ukrainian origin along with auxiliary military equipment to the Ukrainian company ‘Ukrspetsexport’.

Nevertheless, by the end of 2015, only ten tanks were delivered to the Royal Thai Army. Such delays have caused concern among senior officials
QUOTE
One indication for doing so is the creation of a new special Thai committee to evaluate alternatives to the T-84 MBT.

Based on local media reports, the committee has narrowed it down to two models – the Russian-made T-90 (or T-90MS) or the Chinese-made VT-4/MBT-3,000. Both Russian and Chinese models are based on the Soviet-era T-72 tank design and armed with a 125-mm smoothbore gun as their main weapon system
QUOTE
Given Russian and Chinese competition, Ukraine announced in December that it plans to step up production and manufacture 120 new T-84 tanks per year beginning in 2016

all other bunker still looks the same, so yea.. a base construction decision is the most likely the answer

MILITARY ANALYSIS: THE TYPE 052D CLASS GUIDED MISSILE DESTROYER

user posted image

QUOTE
The Type 052D Class DDG is the latest development in the Type 052 family of destroyers. The Type 052D was proceeded by the Type 052C and Type 052B Class destroyers, with the Type 052C being China’s first vessel to have true long range fleet air defense capability
QUOTE
the superstructure design was modernized and an active electronically scanned phased array radar was fitted coupled to a VLS equipped with 48 HQ-9 anti-aircraft missiles. This gave the vessel stand-alone AAW capabilities
QUOTE
8 anti-ship cruise missiles, carried in two 4 cell launchers. Rounding out her armaments, the Type 052C carries a 100mm deck gun, 2 x 30mm close-in defense guns and 6 x 324mm torpedo tubes in two triple launchers
QUOTE
This modular VLS sets the Type 052D apart from other DDGs in the navies of the world and is a true game changer for the PLAN.

user posted image

QUOTE
easiest way to tell is by contrasting the flat panel phased array radar antennae of the Type 052D with the convex panel of its predecessor the Type 052C. This denotes that the newer vessel most likely has an improved version of the Type 348 radar that is also liquid cooled, as opposed to original the air cooled version
QUOTE
this new radar may be able to detect and track stealthy aircraft such as the F-35A/B Lightning II
QUOTE
The new modular VLS is the most striking improvement of the new DDG. It is rectangular in design, with one 32 cell unit mounted forward of the superstructure and one 32 cell unit mounted aft.
QUOTE
Each VLS cell can house 4 missiles of different types. The VLS system is capable of launching surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, anti-ship cruise missiles including the YJ-18, anti-submarine missiles, and land attack cruise missiles.
QUOTE
all VLS cells could be loaded with anti-ship missiles or anti-ship cruise missiles to create a powerful “Aircraft Carrier Strike Group Killer”
QUOTE
A total of twelve Type 052D DDGs are planned before resources and efforts are put into the larger 055 Type DDG.
QUOTE
These vessels also act as a strong access/area denial tool with their capable AESA radars and powerful AAW and ASW capabilities. With these vessels, the PLAN can create a large air defense umbrella

user posted image

QUOTE
The PLAN has been working on a larger and more powerful vessel than the Type 052D DDG that they call the Type 055 DDG. Although called a destroyer, a design displacement of over 10,000 tons (some sources suggest a displacement as large as 14,000 tons) would put the vessel into the category of a guided missile cruiser (CG).
QUOTE
The vessel would likely be armed with two 64 cell VLS fore and aft of the bridge, a large deck gun in a stealthy turret, as well as a full complement of ASW weapons and close-in defense systems. Missile complement for the 128 total VLS cells would be similar to the Type 052
QUOTE
There would be hangar space aft for two helicopters as well as a flight deck
QUOTE
China has the resources, ingenuity and manpower to win a naval arms race with its neighbors. Chinese ability to control access to the South China Sea and effectively control this entire area is just a matter of time

Inside the jihadi workshop of death: How ISIS is developing DRIVERLESS CARS for bomb attacks in the West and teaching fanatics to build missiles capable of downing passenger jets

Rebels face collapse at southern flank in East Ghouta – Map Update

user posted image

Yesterday, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) managed to capture the farms east of Marj Al-Sultan while subsequently entering the village of Al-Bilaliyah. Thereby, a bufferzone has been established around the recently captured helicopter base of Majr al-Sultan

This advance comes on top of a string of SAA gains over the past few months inside the capital of Damascus as government troops continue to enter areas which have been held by Islamist rebels since 2012. Since the main rebel group in East Ghouta, Jaish al-Islam, had its leader Zahran Alloush killed by the Syrian Airforce last week, Islamist rebels have slowly, yet steadily conceded territories to the Syrian Army on the eastern fringes of Damascus.

Currently, local insurgents control a dangerous southern bulge around Dayr al-Asafir. Meanwhile, government troops are advancing at both flanks of this town – most rapidly at the Majr al-Sultan front. Thus, a classic pincer movement spells trouble for rebel defenders of the area as an all-out attack seems imminent.
