3D PRINTER FILLS GAPS ONBOARD THE USS HARRY S. TRUMAN

QUOTE
Within their first weeks of deploying in November, sailors already had created and "printed out" custom dust caps and a wrench. A sailor in the "fab lab" designed his own solution after he and others grew frustrated that an oil cup on a machine was too small for a funnel.

"It required at least two people to get all the oil in the cup, so I figured we have this technology here, why not try something that would make this task easier," Petty Officer 2nd Class Raymond Lee said. "I came up with an extension that narrows the nozzle, cuts the manpower in half, ensures there's no spilled oil all over the deck."

Here’s The First Shot Of The F-15C Pod That Will Change How The Air Force Fights

user posted image

QUOTE
One of the most important programs that the U.S. Air Force is undertaking is far from glamorous and comes with a funny name: Talon HATE. But this podded system will be vital for eliminating communications barriers between the F-22 and F-15C/D fleets, as well as other weapon systems. It’s showing for the first time on the belly of an Operational Test F-15C flying out of Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. Here’s how it works.
QUOTE
The Talon HATE (and by the way, nobody seems to know what that stands for) system includes air-to-air, air-to-ground and satellite data links. Not only will this large pod work as an essential communications bridge and data-fusion center, but it also provides America’s F-15C/D Eagle fleet with a serious sensor enhancement via the installation of an Infrared Search and Track system (IRST) at the 17 foot-long, 1,800 pound pod’s forward tip.
QUOTE
Basically it’s a fighter-mounted universal translator, data-fusion center, and router that takes various data-links’ waveforms and “languages,” and fuses their information into a single common picture. It then rebroadcasts that common picture multiple waveforms and “languages” so that everyone in the battlespace is on the same page and can exploit a much more detailed rendering of where the enemy is and where the good guys are.

This will allow American F-15C/D and other so-called “legacy” fighters, allied aircraft, ships, and ground and command-and-control assets that use MIDS/JTIDS Link 16 data links common to NATO countries to see what the F-22 sees. It does this by receiving and translating the F-22’s proprietary and stealthy Intra-flight data link (FIDL) transmissions into data the MIDS/Link 16 data link terminals can display.

user posted image

QUOTE
This is a very big deal as F-22s are some of the most capable sensor platforms in the world. Their ALR-94 electronic surveillance measures (ESM) and radar warning receiver suite can sniff out the locations of enemy radars and communications, and classify them accordingly. The aircraft’s APG-77 AESA radar is also highly capable, especially considering it will likely be operating forward of other non-stealthy enemy forces, peering deep into enemy territory.

The F-22 does not have Link 16 transmission capability like most other combat aircraft because that system was not designed for stealthy aircraft and its omni-direction emissions could give away the F-22’s presence. As such, the F-22 can currently receive information via Link 16 compatible broadcasts, but it cannot send them. In other words, an F-22 can see what an F-15C sees sensor-wise, but not the other way around.

The Talon HATE pod will basically masquerade as another F-22, with Raptors beaming back information to it for processing and redistribution on MIDS/Link 16 waveforms. This will allow F-15C/Ds to see the F-22’s tactical picture, and other aircraft will be able to as well.

INTERNATIONAL MILITARY REVIEW – SYRIA-IRAQ BATTLESPACE, DEC. 29, 2015

Russian air strikes had destroyed 556 militant targets in 164 combat sorties conducted since December 25. Successfully hit targets were located in Aleppo, Idlib, Latakia, Hama, Homs, Damascus, Deir ez-Zor, and Raqqa provinces. The Russian air support helped the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) to stage offensives to the north and east of Latakia Province. Three significant plateaus towards Kabbani and Sirmaniyah fell into the army control.

Separately, the pro-government forces have continued successful advances in the province of Aleppo. The SAA liberated the village of Doudyan and destroyed militant outposts and supply routes in the villages of Tal Jebin, Tal Meseybeen, Shwehene, Maaret Artiq and Shimaeya. The SAA also took control of the village of Sharba.

On Dec. 27 the Iraqi Security Forces declared victory over ISIS militants in the city of Ramadi. The declaration comes after the Iraq forces encircled the city and seized the central administration complex. However, there are many pockets of militants still entrenched in various positions throughout the city. The Iraqi security forces will also have to spend significant time to clear out the remaining improvised explosive devices that infest the city.

Pentagon confirmed that militants were cleared from the government complex. But some US experts have already noted that the Ramadi’s strategic value is repeatedly overestimated. According to them, Ramadi is just one location in the contested Anbar province and the Iraqi army will face serious problems in attempts to clear nearby ISIS locations in Fallujah, Hit and areas west of Haditha. This rapidly reaction marks that Iraq made a serious step in war on ISIS. A series of such steps could increase the Iraqi security forces independence from the US-led coalition support what definitely isn’t a goal of the US political leadership.

Russian Air Defense System Shoots While It Scoots

Air defenses are often the only thing standing between enemy aircraft and their targets, but up til now, it's pretty relatively easy to destroy them. That's because even mobile air defenses typically must stop in order to shoot, making the job easier for aircraft dedicated to knocking them now.

Not anymore. Russia's Tor-M2U system is a 35-ton tracked armored vehicle with a crew of three. Equipped with a radar and up to eight missiles, Tor can can destroy enemy aircraft, drones, and unmanned aerial vehicles at ranges of up to 12 miles. And now Tor can also now engage targets on the move.

As the video below shows, Tor can now keep up with Russian ground forces on the offensive, protecting armored columns and headquarters from air attack. That also means that Tor may last just a little bit longer on the battlefield as it plays a game of cat and mouse with enemy air forces above.

Russian Air Defense System Shoots While It Scoots

What I love about Russia is that it has multi-layer battlefield air defenses. Everything from S-400 to Buk to Tor to Pantsir to Strela, so theoretically a complete system can cover all air defense threat ranges from as far as 250 miles away all the way to just 1000 yards away.

Meanwhile all I hear from US air defenses are Patriots and Stingers only.

Confirmed: China Is Building a Second Aircraft Carrier

user posted image

QUOTE
Earlier this fall, IHS Jane’s 360 carried photographs that appeared to show the carrier under construction at the Dalian shipyard. Back in March, Chinese media ran quotes from Chinese admirals about the new aircraft carrier – including news on the development of an electromagnetic launch system.

According to Yang, however, fighter jets on the new carrier will use a ski-jump to take off. The carrier will serve as a base for J-15 fighters (already in use on the Liaoning), Yang said, as well as “other ship-based aircraft” (likely to eventually include the J-31, a fifth-generation fighter currently under development). Yang added that the new carrier “will have new improvements in many aspects” compared to the Liaoning, but did not elaborate.

Yang said the new carrier will have a displacement of 50,000 tonnes, around the size of the Liaoning (and much smaller than U.S. Nimitz-class carriers, which displace over 100,000 tonnes). The size fits with previous estimates made by IHS Jane’s based on satellite imagery of the presumed carrier under construction at Dalian. The new carrier will be conventionally powered rather than nuclear powered, according to Yang. He declined to give an estimated timetable for the completion.

QUOTE
According to Kanwa Defense Review, there’s a good chance that the next carrier will be based at a new facility on Hainan Island, near the South China Sea

That's why the European eye US suspiciously. Had US not holding the European's balls in securities, they could have parted way long ago. And the US has been tightening heir grip on those balls.

Looking at the way things have been going with the wealthy Gulf states, you can conclude that money can buy you lots of hardware but not victory. The Saudis arm forces are generally not capable, and those exhibit a slightly better professionalism are usually hired guns (paki mainly).

INTERNATIONAL MILITARY REVIEW – SYRIA, DEC. 30, 2015

In the Dara’a province, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the National Defense Forces (NDF) with the Russian Air Forces’ support are advancing in the town of Sheikh Miskeen clashing with the Free Syrian Army’s “Southern Front Brigades”. The pro-government sources report that the SAA took control of the Battalion 82 base and the hilltop of Tal Al-Hish overlooking the northern flank of the town. The clashes are continuing.

Sheikh Miskeen is located along the Quneitra-Sweida Highway and overlooks a way on the Al-Quneitra Governorate and the city of Nawa.

According to the field reports, the SAA liberated the town of Maheen, 25 kilometers from the vital M5 highway, and the town of Huwwarin after the heavy clashes with ISIS. The towns were taken by the terrorist group in late November. It is expected that the SAA will continue their offensive onto the town of Quryatayn.

The Syrian government has essentially avoided clashing with the Syrian Kurds which are a major part of the SDF. However, as the Kurdish forces and the Russian-backed government forces meet up, the question of developing joint strategy arises. Moreover, Ankara already concerned by the growing Kurdish clout on the border and definitely is preparing actions to stop the Kurds in their offensive actions. Such an action would also push the Syrian government and the SDF to coordinate their actions in fight against foreign-backed terrorists.

I just love those short to mid-range mobile ballistic missiles like Scud missile. I believe these types of missiles still have a battlefield utility, primarily as an alternative to the air force for long-range strikes. They're relatively cheaper and easier to maintain, hide and operate than air forces with fixed infrastructures.

user posted image

Just like Yemen doesn't have a functional air force, but they still can strike back and terrorize the Saudis by their Scud missiles strikes, their limited effectiveness notwithstanding.
