Non-deliverable forward (NDF) contract that is settled in US dollar and traded offshore. Generally the NDFs are traded in financial centres such as Singapore, London and New York.

The fixing of the ringgit against the US dollar is currently done onshore through a spot fixing mechanism monitored by Bank Negara. The mechanism of fixing the rate onshore or in the domestic market removes certain elements of arbitrage and speculation.

But it does not prevent traders from taking a position in the offshore market by going into an agreement to buy or sell NDFs. It provides an arbitrage opportunity. In simple terms, the difference between the spot rate that is fixed in the domestic market and the offshore rate indicated by the MYR NDF provides an arbitrage opportunity for traders.

Ringgit big boast by Toyota.

Toyota Motor Corporation has confirmed plans to build a new factory in Malaysia. The new plant will be located in Bukit Raja Industrial Estate, Klang, and will have an initial annual production capacity of 50,000 units a year, which can be expanded with increased demand. Combined with the current factory, Toyota’s Malaysian production volume will be around 90,000 to 100,000 units per annum.

UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) will invest approximately RM2 billion for this project, a total sum that includes land cost, construction, equipment and engineering support from Thailand and Japan. It is the biggest investment ever by UMWT in the company’s history.

The 670,000 square metres new plant is part of Toyota’s plans to reorganise its production system in Malaysia. The current Assembly Services Sdn Bhd (ASSB) factory will be left to focus on the production of commercial vehicles, while the new plant takes on production of passenger cars, including Energy Efficient Vehicles (EEVs).

Big new FDIs flowing into country impact are greater than those portfolio funds.

And also sign of Ringgit downside limited in future.

Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) said a new spot fixing methodology for US dollar/ringgit trade, based on market transaction data, will be implemented from July 18.

In a statement today, BNM said that under the new methodology adopted by the central bank and the Financial Markets Association of Malaysia (FMA), the reference rate will be known as the Kuala Lumpur USD/MYR Reference Rate.

The move is part of the effort to adopt global best practices for the domestic financial market, BNM said, adding that another measure involves the expansion of the official closing hour for onshore ringgit market from to 6pm from 5pm.
