Hi Sifus,

Im now in dilemma to figuring that should i buy the 7-days JR Rail Pass for my trip to take Shinkansen from Hakodate Station to Tokyo Station or just take domestic flight would be better.

This is because im not sure im able to fully utilize my JR Pass for the 7 days or i just purchase JR/Metro/Subway ticket based on my travel station to station.

My trip will be a 12 days trip is as below :

Travel date is 9th-May to 20th May.

Day 1 - Day 3 : Sapporo Area (5 Days 4 Nights,Included Otaru day trip)
Day 4 : From Sapporo - Otaru - Sapporo (Day trip)
Day 5 - Day 6 : From Sapporo - Hakodate Area (3 Days 2 Nights)
Day 7 - Day 12 : From Hakodate - Tokyo - Yokohama - Tokyo (6 Days 5 Nights)

The schedule above is tentatively my planning and all the mode of transport is using ONLY JR/Metro/Subway/Walk. Minus bus and taxi.

Note I : Yes i know in Tokyo,JR Pass is quite useless as its better to use metro/subway.
Note II : How i take Shinkansen from Hakodate to Tokyo? There will be a new route from Tokyo Station to Shin- Hakodate Station starting end of March 2016.
Note III: Found out that ticket for Shinkansen from Aomori Station to Tokyo station alone already cost around 17,000Yen,therefore, it will cost a little more extra if i travel from Hakodate to Tokyo compared to Domestic Flights which starting at 7,000Yen.

Appreciate for the inputs.

Thanks.

QUOTE(cloudwan0 @ Dec 11 2015, 01:32 PM)
you have to put the timing into consideration also,
from Hakodate to Tokyo shinkansen take about 5.5 hours
flight will be 1.5 hours

JR pass actually also useful in Tokyo, just you have to plan your trip better
I use JR pass twice in Tokyo before, you still able to access to those famous place like shinjuku, shibuya, akihabara, asakusha, shinagawa, mitaka and more, just might take more time when travel between

From your list i will suggest you to take flight
*
After all of the searching and homeworks, the final conclusion is just take the train instead of flight. This is due to i need to travel back from Hakodate to Sapporo airport and it takes 3hr 30mins train ride! And i have to spend additional money to purchase the train tickets coz i will not purchase the JR pass if im taking flight.

Also, travel duration from Shin Hakodate station to Tokyo station is only 4hr 10mins+ on fastest speed basis.

Therefore,i think my best option is to purchase the JR Pass and take Shinkansen from Hakodate back to Tokyo. Thats my best bet. sweat.gif

Furthermore,i think JR Pass is much like the best bang for buck for my trip due to the problems above. unsure.gif

This coming Dec 23 will be my 503 times. Work plus Holiday
From Hakodate City to Shin-Hakodate Station will cost a fortune if taking taxi. 30 Minute Ride if by Bus.
Shin-Hakodate Station will build at current Oshima-Ono Station. Once Construction finised. Oshima-Ono Station will be rename to Shin-Hakodate Station.

Hi RC,im confused on the Shinkansen Train.

Is there any other Shinkansen other than NOZOMI & MIZUHO type running from Tokyo Station to Shin-Osaka Station?(On the Tokaido-Sanyo Route)

This is because im not sure that im able to travel to Osaka by Shinkansen using the JR Pass due to the restrictions on that two type. But i found out from JR websites, they do have other few types running but i just need to be sure on it.

Thanks.

Then find out all the informations, sort it up the itinerary then only post up here to ask for advises on the trip.

Then only that we can help/advise you on what is yes and what is no.

Hi RC,

Appreciate if you can suggest me a day trip to OSAKA from Tokyo.

It will be just a Touch n Go to OSAKA as my wife insist must drop by at Osaka once for our trip.

My plan is to take the earliest Shinkansen at 7am and reach there ard 1045am.

Our main priority is to hunt for the good food at OSAKA only.

Thanks.

Frankly this is one of the funniest things I ever heard in this thread lol. Put your foot down and tell your wife that an Osaka day trip makes no sense whatsoever. stick to Tokyo and come back to Kansai next year / next trip instead of doing such wuliao things doh.gif

(Or cut short Tokyo and spend at least a couple of days in Kansai)

sapora I agree with cloudwan0. 7 days just stay in Kansai, next trip only go Tokyo. Osaka 2d Kyoto 3d Nara/Kobe 2d just right.
*
No choice and cant argue. I know its kinda waste of time and not feasible, but still have to follow la. what to do? sweat.gif

So Sifu RC,any recommendation of the great food there other than Takoyaki and Okonomiyaki?

Thanks. biggrin.gif

Correction, SUICA and in fact all regional IC cards are now inter-usable.

So now means SUICA can use for JR Ticket as well?

Suica/Pasmo/ICOCA is just a prepaid charge card just like Touch N Go. Long time ago, only can use in their respective region but now is inter-usable already. E.g. ICOCA last time only Kansai Area but now can use in Tokyo area transportation already.

By JR ticket, u mean Shinkansen ticket? That 1 still have to use credit card or cash and purchased at machines or ticketing office. Cannot use Suica/Pasmo/ICOCA
*
No no no,not bullet train ticket. I mean using SUICA to buy JR Train ticket. Normal train.

u mean this?

Valid Areas and Transportation Systems
The Suica can be used on JR East lines in the Tokyo metropolitan area as well as for subways, buses and the Tokyo Monorail that connects Haneda Airport with Tokyo.
In addition to the Tokyo area, the Suica can be used for certain transportation systems in the Sendai and Niigata, Hokkaido, Tokai, West Japan and Kyushu areas.

the above taken from this http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/pass/suica.html

just swipe the card & u good to go

Yes. Should be something like this.

suica / pasmo have always (or at least, for damn long time riao) been useable for JR non-Shinkansen lines. It's like touch n go, u don't need to "exchange" it for any ticket, you just tap in tap out at the station gantries.

Metro and subway as well izit?
