it is possible to execute a trip on budget
My recent 10D Kyoto/Osaka was RM3.5k in all (early April)
Bare in mind, these includes flight on Vietnam airlines, Unizo Hotel (kyoto), Ibis (Osaka), and mostly budget meals from Lawson/Familymart/matsuya/yoshinoya/sukiya etc which i enjoyed eating and doing
Off course you have to look out for offers/promos and proper planning
(many thanks to the forumers here, especially RegentCID)
Overall, truth to be told, i enjoyed Kyoto more than Osaka. Probably i prefer more rural areas. Overall is was a good trip. People are extremely polite & helpful. Life is very systematic there, trains are on time and no fuss with travelling around. probably next, will be nagoya
Remember to rent a pocket wifi. Google maps and some common sense really help alot. There's no need to worry on which bus to take etc. just enter destination on google maps, and it will show price/route
Food is generally good and aplenty. i was always anticipating what to try next on convenience stores. there are just too many varieties. Family Mart's fried chicken was among the best i have eaten. and Matsuya's hamburg beef set..was great and tasty.
arashiyama

regentcid's recommendation kuromon kobe beef. really good, melts in mouth. must try
Nara
