Buy one set of Uniqlo Heat Tech base layer here. Then get more from Uniqlo there. As for the jacket, if you're fussy and would like to see lots of choices below buying, make Shimokitazawa your first stop at Tokyo. Lots of vintage/used jackets there for insanely sweet prices.

ANA, especially if you're flying with kids.

QUOTE(sno0py @ Jan 5 2016, 01:53 AM)
Hi guys, anyone experience taking ANA airline before?

Is it worth the wait for transit if buy ANA multi-city (KUL->Osaka, then Tokyo->KUL)? Considering the price is quite tempting which cost RM1.3k+, and includes meals + up to 2 pieces luggage (23kgx2) per way

Or better to take AA?  hmm.gificon_question.gif

I've rented from Global Advanced Communications on both trips to Tokyo and can confirm they work fine at Enoshima, Kamakura, Hakone as well.

If you're not getting the unlimited one, try to stay off YouTube or you'll be sorry. Don't get the eco/slim types unless you've got an extra power bank around to resuscitate it by afternoon.

Hello all!

I'll be travelling to Tokyo, Japan in February. I wanna ask your opinion on rental of portable wifi. I've read the one recommended in this forum, the Puru Wifi Rental. Anybody got any experience with it? Anybody here would recommend any other brand? I'm looking to rent for 10 days and to pick up and drop off at Narita. I'll be using it mainly to not get lost in Tokyo and Youtube for my children.

That's so true, especially for Sony models.

Some brand will only have Japanese language menus so check this before buying

Don't even think of visiting if you're hauling luggage or a huge backpack. The interior is quite cramped and it can get very busy in there.

I recommend you rent from one of the many companies (eConnect, Japan Wireless, Global Advanced Communications, etc) operating there and have them post it to the past office at your arriving airport so that you can use it immediately after clearing immigration.

QUOTE(Victor3010 @ Jan 17 2016, 09:19 PM)
Hi guys... I am thinking of renting the pocket wifi from malaysia for my japan trip.. Or just rent straight from japan

Between these two, which should I choose? Or I should rent it from Japan instead?

Visiondata - RM325 (Unlimited)
WiYo - RM364 (Unlimited)

For the GAC unit, I believe it is high speed for 1GB/day for the unlimited one. I've subscribed with them twice. Very reliable and their units have never let me down. Don't require my powerbank as their battery could last around 8-10 hours with about 3-4 devices (GAC say max 5, I don't have 5 devices in my travel group) connected in my experience.

Those cheaper/slim units have batteries that can't get you even 6hrs of use. My guess is that your your AirBNB assortment unit will be a slim unit. You might be able to connect only 2-3 devices to it.

QUOTE(Victor3010 @ Jan 17 2016, 10:34 PM)
Icic... Is it really unlimited? I had a look at those and the prices were very close the Malaysia one...

I am travelling with 5 adults altogether although my airbnb does provide one unit, but an additional unit would help in case we split up

I'm not sure if I understand what you write here correctly.

In Tokyo, you can use your Suica/Pasmo card for pay as you go. Subway or JR trains day passes are not really value for money unless your itinerary involves checking into 6 or more train stations per day.

Fuji Hakone Pass is useful for your Mt Fuji excursion. Research Kansai Thru Pass for your Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe visit.

You need to buy the JR pass here, get an exchange order and hand it in to a JR travel office in Japan upon your arrival. You can't buy a JR pass over there.

QUOTE(neuroneuster @ Jan 19 2016, 04:39 PM)
Hi, I want to ask for opinions on the most ideal passes to use for my itinerary

26,27,28 - Shinjuku
28,29 - Ueno Asakusa
29-30- Shibuya, Shinjuku

1. For five days, I will be in East areas, Tokyo. Should I get rail pass per day or suica topup or subway pass? I am confused between whether to choose subway or the other train used. If I choose both, which ticket or pass is convenient?

30- to Kawaguchiko Lakes, Fuji
31,1,2- Kansai. Kyoto, Nara Kobe Osaka.

So, should I get jr pass in Kansai?
These can be reached in Haneda Airport easily, aren't they?

Thanks.

@RegentCid, have you visited Misaki Port/Jogashima Island? Any tips on which restaurant to try there on a day trip?

if you want a free and easy outing, hop onto Oedo line from Shidpme station. Get off at Roppongi station and go for an early dinner at Hard Rock Cafe Roppongi. Then take a leisurely 20mins stroll to Zojoji Temple and end your night at Tokyo Tower.

QUOTE(fkinmeng @ Mar 16 2016, 04:43 PM)
ok. my plan for the night is:

from my hotel (nearby tokyo dome) -> akihabara -> shinjuku -> Tokyo Metropolitan Goverment Building -> Harajuku -> Shibuya -> tokyo dome -> back to hotel.

is it too rush for a trip from around 6-7pm?

any suggestions to improvise?

There's no one size fits all itinerary. You make plans based on what your interests are.

Day 3 -Tsukiji Market is relocating in Nov 2016. Will you make it before then? After Nov, it'll be at Toyasu/Odaiba. On a nice clear day, Tokyo Tower offers clear views as far as Mt Fuji. You can consider visiting Tokyo Tower at night or after sundown.

Day 7 - Roppongi is not really a must visit place unless you are specifically after clubbing or Hard Rock Cafe experience. I'd try to plan visiting Shibuya in the morning and spending the rest of the day at Shimokitazawa as it is nearer. Get to Shimokitazawa before dark to find your way around as the train station is undergoing extensive renovation.

Day 9 - I'll scrap Disneyland and head over to Yokohama. This will allow you to compare and contrast both cities. It's very near and suitable for a day trip. There's a Nissin Cup Noodle Museum, Kirin Beer Factory (free 45 min tours and 3 free drinks at the end of the tour) and lots of other stuff to see.

Plan light on your last day, especially if weather is bad, in order to allow you sufficient time to get to Narita Airport. In severe weather (overnight or extensive raining), services of express trains like Narita Express can be disrupted.

QUOTE(Azuma-kun @ Apr 26 2016, 12:10 PM)
My plan so far

Day 0 - Arrived, Overnight in airport
Day 1 - Sumida / Asakusa / Asakusabashi (hotel is at this area)
Day 2 - Akihabara / Tokyo central/Nihonbashi / Ginza
Day 3 - Tokyo Tower area / Tsukiji area / Odaiba
Day 4 - Mibu/Tochigi / Ueno / Tokyo Dome area
Day 5 - Checkout from Asakusabashi / Kawaguchiko
Day 6 - Checkout from Kawaguchiko / Shinjuku

Day 7-10 need to be adjusted depending on the hotel. Haven't decided yet which hotel to go. So can consider not finalized yet.
Day 7 - Harajuku / Shibuya / Roppongi
Day 8 - Nakano / Ikebukuro
Day 9 - Disneyland area (might scrap this plan)
Day 10 (last) - Free day. Dont know where to go. Might repeat to Akihabara. Flight at 11.45PM

Any comment or feedback?

You might want to try a love hotel or a capsule hotel at Shibuya just for a night if that's the case.

If you're staying at Asakusa/Ueno, Yokohama is an hour away nia. Avoid the Chinatown in Yokohama and you stunt be disappointed.

QUOTE(Azuma-kun @ Apr 27 2016, 07:28 PM)
Thanks for the long feedback.

I'll be there from 21-31 Oct so i think Tsukiji market will still be there. Crossfinger.

We want to see the nightlife there. Was planning to overnight in Shibuya area also instead of go back to the hotel. Will need to find if there is any 24 hours bar or late nite bar. Street bar is fine too as long there is place to drink or eat.

I will discuss the Yokohama trip with my partner. The reason why we dont really go out of Tokyo is because we dont want to waste our time with the journey. Mibu/Tochigi is because we plan to visit Bandai Museum.

My flight is in Haneda, not Narita. We might repeat a trip to Akihabara before going back. Having one last chance with the maid cafes laugh.gif

Personally, I'd plan more day trips out of Tokyo with the amount of time you have planned. Try Enoshima/Kamakura, Mt Takao, etc day trips. I had a month in Tokyo last year and still haven't run our of sights to see or attractions to visit.

Keep the Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, Hiroshima circuit for your next visit.

QUOTE(tippman @ Apr 29 2016, 10:29 PM)
Hi

I have so far planned some of the itinerary for my up coming trip in Dec as follows:-

1. 14/12 - arrived Narita and will stay in Shinjuku
2. 15/12 - Travel to Hakone
3. 16/12 - check out from hotel and travel to Yokohama
4. 17/12 - check out from hotel and travel to Tokyo

I have from 17-27 and just want to ask should I venture out to some other place like kyoto or any other place or just stay in Tokyo?

Thanks

I prefer souvenir hunting at Asakusa and the various Donki stores. Ameyokocho Market is also fine.

Which 1 star is this? Are you hinting at the one at Shinjuku that serves only sardine dishes and is closed on Sundays?

For vintage clothing, Shimokitazawa is heavenly. Nakano is more for otaku's. It's like a Shimokitazawa for Akihabara geeks.

If your backpack is 45L or smaller I think it's still manageable. Otherwise you risk bashing Tokyo natives during rush hour commuting or even window shopping.

QUOTE(2+2=5 @ May 27 2016, 01:31 PM)
I just wanna check out those 2nd hand stuffs at Nakano. Anyways, i was thinking just to drag around my backpack during day 3, since i will travel light, backpacking, and will check-in at Shinjuku after Akihabara trip. Do you think it would be fine?

Strolling around Shimokitazawa without a specific plan in mind and getting lost traversing the many back alleys and stumbling upon plenty of interesting little cafés and boutiques is my idea of enjoying Shimokitazawa.

Sleep in a little later past your normal routine. Shimokitazawa only breathes into life after 11am. Skip breakfast and plan on having brunch at a cafe there instead. Stop by as many cafés or convenience stores as you desire (to rest your legs) was what I did on my last visit and it was quite a heavenly and unforgettable experience.

QUOTE(2+2=5 @ May 27 2016, 06:32 PM)
Wait a minute, i just check out this Shimokitazawa on Youtube and all this crazy hips stuffs going over there, well i must admit i'm intrigued to check that place out, seems like spending there on evening is the best time, yes?

So i could re-route, check out from hotel then, Akihabara > Shinjuku + Check in > Shimokitazawa. Dont mind skipping Toyosu + Odaiba. Hows that?

The reason i want to switch hotel because there's Oak Fuji Hostel at Asakusa/Sumida, kinda like the vibe there, and the rooftop, you know  biggrin.gif
