Thanks Lucas. When you say hotel allow to add futon, you mean those hotel that have the tatami room, right?  Do they charge extra? Appreciate any tips hahaha ... am bringing my in-laws as well this round, so i have to book like 2 rooms for each overnight *sweats*  biggrin.gif
*
extra charge yes
but not really recalled how much... coz i stay in ryokan and i walk-in
all paid by credit card
(no research/homework rclxs0.gif )

but if u r going during super peak, i dont think u wanna take the risk

my tips: look for the hotel/ryokan website/email
then write directly to them
or call them (from msia) skype?? my phone can call japan for free rclxs0.gif

---

almost forget, there is a time i stayed in western room...
the hotel provide extra futon to this type of room too

gud luck

Thanks for the info.

Hahaha, old skool ppl like me use Excel Sheets. whistling.gif

I do use GMaps just to see distance etc from one place to another, but didnt really use it to map all our day-to-day itinerary. Thx for the tip thumbup.gif

And yea, kinda peak. Not risking. If sendiri jalan, then okay but we have to book like 2 rooms and with kids and seniors, proper planning better. And rclxs0.gif rclxs0.gif i did call some of the hotels to enquire. Had some help from Google translate la but when they speak, i had to listen clearly and ask for repeat .. Say What? Hahahaha

I bought my tickets not too long ago. Consider kinda last minute ... and while doing more research and booking, realized its Peak Summer.

One challenge in accommodations is that Japanese hotels seems kinda strict on accommodating children or at least from what i read, squeezing more than 2 people in one room. We have 2 young children and 1 infant.  doh.gif  booking is a headache.

Are Japanese hotels really strict about having more than 2-3 people in one room?
*
If you booked business hotel liked Toyoko Inn, Super Hotel , Dormmy Inn, they usually allow one child (may be below 5-6 years old) free to sleep by using the existing bed. If you have two children age more than 5 years old, you may need to book two rooms.

I did some preliminary research. Hokkaido peak is summer, during ,their lavender season. But also alot of visitors during the snow festival.

Assuming i want to do both snow festival and drift ice in next year feb, is it too late if i only start planning/booking in december? Ie 2 months in advance? 4 of us going. Just friends, and we are ok with ryokan/budget accom, flexible.

Yes. Still ok. Most of Japan hotel only let advance booking 3 months ahead only; such as Toyoko Inn , Dormy Inn , APA Hotel.
Drift Ice activities must go Abashiri. One of best experience.
At Sapporo can take JR Limited Express ''Okhotsk" direct to Abashiri.

Thanks. Cause i'm abit lazy to plan right now and also not too sure about work load at this point in time.

I found an itinerary recommended on japan-guide.com. So i hope to catch the end of snow festival proceed straightline then end my trip on the east/northeast coast. Then back to my starting point and fly back to kl. I assume their itinerary suggested is realistic and not overly rushed.

want to ask a question regarding place for accommodation
what's the best area to stay for 1st timer?
i know its shinjuku because of AA's late arrival and theres a limo bus directly go there
but i saw most of the airbnb's there aren't located at shinjuku
they're either located at shin okuba, higashi shinjuku or sasazuka
wonder if theres still train that go to these station at night?
or is there other area thats also good and theres bus going there?

i've decided to drop the oedo onsen monogatari and straight to airbnb so i dnt need to haul the luggage the next day everywhere waiting for check in

Can be done, But must work together with Wikipedia. Extra more homework.
Example Noboribetsu to Chitose.
First you go Noribetsu Station first on wikipedia. Then you will get Muroran Main Line info.
Then you will found Numanohata Station are Interchange between Muroran Main Line & Chitose Line.
Then you will success reach Chitose Station from Noboribetsu.

Oedo Onsen was expensive and sleep on tatami floor only. I rather sleep at Airport Hotel much better.
Best choice was sleep at Airport Hotel or take limo bus to Shinjuku. At Shinjuku walk to those Internet & Manga Cafe. You can rent a small room inside CC. Extremely cheap and free bottomless drinks too.

Those Internet speed are 30mb per sec. Used it for do homework. brows.gif

Last train all stop at 11.30pm - 12am.
You won't able to catch it.

Family also can stay a those Manga Internet Cafe just for few hour.
They have alot big comfortable sofa for rest.
Drink some coffee or soft drink (Free) , buy some instant noodle if hungry.

If you already booked Airbnb then take Taxi from Shinjuku Station to your airbnb location. Since already at Shinjuku, wot be that expensive compare from Airport. Shinjuku to Shin Okubo just 1.4km // 1,100 Yen , Walking also can be done. Tokyo street are very safe for walking at night.

Shinjuku to Higashi Shinjuku also around 1.4km // 1,100 Yen
