Uh cat food. I bought 2 hedgys from JasonMole doh.gif just arrived today. Not sure what brand cat food but i'm sure their not those whiskies doh.gif read about them. Anyway Mole said to dump in the food and they would be enough for a week icon_question.gif

Here is the picture of their enclosure and everything

http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?act=ST&f...0#entry11170082

Also is it true i should never feed them fruits etc or they will not want to eat cat food anymore ? shocking.gif

Anyway i'm pretty happy since this is my first official pet ! I like cats but i thought i would go for something interesting and fun. cool.gif

Hao - Yep i got one set of wheels. They will have to share ^^ thx.

Crazy - What catfood brand would you recommend ? Is the hedgehog specific food worth to look at ? I hear most hedgys don't like it...

I guess it's those like Spike's Delight that's in the US market. Well, getting those is good but only certain brands are considered high quality since many of the "hedgehog food" available for sale in the US did not go through much research and testings.... so some will have a bland taste while some are too high in corn or gluten. So a number of keepers in the US suggest feeding high quality catfood as it is safer and provides a good source of protein and fats essential for a hedgehog.

Hm i'm scared to treat it fruits etc or it won't eat the catfood i give it. Should i be worried ?

Also since their new to me how do i get them to warm up to me ? So far they've been huddling in a round ball. The youngun keeps turning around a bit and looking at me, and then turns into a tigther ball ! I'm not sure whether it's afraid or it's trying to get some sleep doh.gif It keeps doing that every 20 minutes or so .... I saw it anointing itself once o_O; Very cute notworthy.gif

I was looking at some ideas here

http://exoticpets.about.com/cs/hedgehogs/ht/handlehh.htm

http://www.hedgehogvalley.com/hhome.html

Also is dumping a weeks worth of food in the bowl ok ? Or should i give a days worth of food everyday so they don't get over weight doh.gif ?

Well, it will take a you a few months before they really warm up to you. But then if the previous owner never handled them often, then it would be hard for you to make them friendly to humans. Hedgehogs that are afraid would always stay in a ball no matter what. So what you can do now is handle them often. Tahan the pain and handle them hahaahah

So when their in a bubble and making sounds so far i just leave them alone, or should i be trying to hold them o_O; ?

I have the same problem. My hedgies seem to be asleep all day. I haven't seen much activity :/

The youngun seems ok, but the older hedgy seems to be over weight. I only have 1 wheel ( ps: the hedgies are in 2 separate containers nod.gif ) so i put the wheel in the fat hedgys container, and not long after i see the fat hedgy crawl to smell it. It was smelling the food bowl next to it, and then the wheel.... it finally hopped onto the whell and it moved a bit barely. The fat hedgy couldn't even use the wheel !!! Funny yet worrying at the same time shocking.gif How on earth am i gonna help the hedgy lose some weight ? icon_question.gif

Also what should i do about their sleep patterns ? Is this normal to sleep most of the day away ? Their usually all in curled up ballz so i can't tell if their really sleeping or just plain bored flex.gif

I gave my 2 hedgehogs baths doh.gif very cute. They were more docile and let me pat them too while bathing.

uh i have a question. About nail cutting, from what i read people usually do this every 1-2 weeks.

Anyone have a picture for what is normal and how much to cut ? I don't want my hedgy to bleed or hurt its foot >-<;

Added on May 9, 2007, 11:29 amSigh... since nobody replied, i tried cutting my hedgys nails myself.

One of it was bleeding after i cut ! probably to deep >_<:

I read online that they bleed profusely, so i wasn't too surprised seeing all the blood. So i put some corn starch to stop the bleeding doh.gif

Anyway the poor hedgy looked a bit sad. It seemed like it was looking down feeling sorry for itself. I felt bad for it >-<; but it's nails was quire long and curved, and it didn't run its wheel much cauz i suspect its nails were hurting it.

If anyone can give some pointers on nail cutting it would be appreciated.

Hm... i did this during its bath to soften its nails, and quills. Their a bit easier to handle when their taking their bath.

But when i grab them and turn them around to get to the nail most the time their curling into ballz, i can't reach any nail at all >_<:

It finally got tired and let me get on with it doh.gif heh.

flex.gif Hi.

Could someone with a hedgehog take a picture of what this pink vein thing is i should look out for ? I have searched the net high and low.

I can't afford to take my 2 hedgys to the vet every 2 -3 weeks to get their nails clipped doh.gif

When i attempted my first try at this i had an assistant to hold the hedgy, while i snagged a leg in between my fingers when a leg came into them, then quickly nip them. We tried this after letting it have a bath because it softens the nails, and their less likely to curl, and usually let us handle them during that period. I suspect because they are traumatised after getting brushed clean with water haha.

The hedgehog will curl into a ball which your fingers may get trapped inside ! It is not easy to clip nails when they do that doh.gif have not figured out a way to prevent it from happening.

I'd like to report that the big hedgy is a bit more active then it us to be. It uses the wheel a bit more now. I even went out specially to buy another wheel so both hedgs have access to their own wheel 24/7

Mr Moogle's is a very active hedgy when he is wide awake. He will hop into his wheel and run, turn around and run the other side, hop off the wheel and run around his enclosure, hop back onto the wheel and run again. Damn cute. He is so damn active he usually attempts to climb on his house and climb out of his custom made glass enclosure to escape cry.gif which is why i put in netting ontop during the night.

Henrieta just prefers to sleep most of the day, i rarely see her in her wheel hmm.gif i am a bit worried for her health. Any tips for getting the hedgy to exercise more would be appreciated.

Wheel about 100 each doh.gif But.... i like my hedgehogs, i want them to get some entertainment because being in a cage with nothing is very boring.... hedgehogs will also cry cry.gif Sometimes the hedgehogs manage to tip over the wheel !!!

I wanted to buy them a fan because at the back of my house it gets hot during the afternoon but parents say it's costy so instead i bought some blinds so the sun isn't too bright for them notworthy.gif

This glass enclosures actually have a hole in the bottom. I just remove the bottom partition, then put a hose in and the water will come out the hole.

Actualy I bought this setup from Adrian Mole for Rm 600 ish since he was quiting his hobby.

Pretty convenient to clean nod.gif

I use a scoop to clean out the shit. My hedgys tend to poop in the corner, i guess they understand that if they poop near their house, it will get smelly. Yep my hedgys are smart rclxms.gif

The hardest thing to clean though is the wheels. Hedgy poop hardens !!! you need something to scrap off the poop inside the wheel ridges !!!! shocking.gif

Hm i want to take my hedgys to the vet but my father is a bit stingy o_O;

*yes i know their cruel to animals -.-; but what to do ...

Is there a good hedgehog vet near Mutiara Damansara, Pj ?

To my understanding not all vets know anything at all about hedgys so not sure which to go to, and which offering good service at reasonable rates.

Many vets like to rip off on us caring animal lovers :[

Also i got 2 hedgehogs if i bring both hedgys is that gonna cost a very big bomb instead of just 1 ? Or not so much ?

And how will i go about transporting the hedgys ! I read some peoples hedgehogs get car sick o_O;

I feed my hedgehogs baby kitten food ( the good kind ), and also make sure they get their water bowls replaced regularly with tap water.
