Hi,
I'm interested in these 2 foldies, Dahon visc P18 and Dahon Vigor P9. I already got a foldie now, a Doppelganger and thinking to upgrade to Dahon. I'm going to ride the foldie on bumpy road at kampung paddy field for photography and on road for exercising. In future, i'm planning to use it for a tour around Asia or Europe.

My question is,which one is better for my plan? I've read a post in V2 about the comparison which was made by Etigge. Visc p18 has 18 speeds while vigor p9 has the same frame as Vector which is high range (but lower price). Vigor p9 can be upgraded later if i need more gears.

In term of design, of course i like Vigor p9 better. However i'm not sure about vigor p9 performance over visc p18 performance. Is vigor p9 can handle the added weight for touring accessories?between these 2, which one is more stabil to carry my tour load?

both are good model and could load around 25-35kg for touring. but the drawback of those two model are both are aluminium material.

i didnt say aluminium are no good, but when it comes to confort, i will choose chromoly steel of course! u can change to fat tyre but nothing ride as comfy and stiff like chromoly! a bit heavy, but its worth it!

oh ya, if u planning on upgrades, forget about gears. coz that is the only item u can add on later within ur budget.16speed are enough already if u on tight budget.

oh ya, the only chromoly steel frame are dahon speed and boardwalk.

Hi,
Can someone recommend reliable and affordable:
1) GPS (below rm400)
2) cyclometer (right now i'm using cateye vello wireless)
(Below rm300)
3) any device that combine GPS + cyclometer that cost below RM1000.
A review said Garmin Edge 20 is good but doesn't have good navigational function. How about Garmin Edge 800 and Garmin 520?
Thanks smile.gif

There are no GPS below RM400 , even more so with our currency status. You can get a used one but it might also cost more than RM400.

There are numerous cyclometer, wireless but you already have one, right?

GPS and cyclometer combined, all bike specific GPS , the Garmin Edge series are.  They either comes with or without the cadence sensor, heart rate sensor and speed sensor, depending on your purchase. As for speed sensor, the head unit will also indicate speed via GPS tracking, so there might not be a need for speed sensor.

Navigational function (with map) only comes with the 800 and 1000 series. The 500 series has none. The 800 series is now Garmin Edge 820. The Garmin Edge 800 series used to cost about RM1000 but now the price has inflated to RM1600 nowadays for the 820. I saw a used unit in BBS , asking for RM1300 for the Edge 810. A bit too high if you ask me.

Alternatively, you can use hiking or trekking GPS as many cyclist and tourers use them. They are cheaper and the lowest level unit that has map and navigation is Garmin Etrek 20. There's a Etrek 30 with elevation triangulation. Off course there are more higher end models like Oregon and Rhinos which is also a walkie talkie. The Edge are specilized for cycling so they are expensive. The calories counter and your height , weight etc are all taken into calculation, while the hiking Etreks has none of these features.

There was a good one by Garmin, the Garmin Edge 705 but discontinued. It served me well last time until I changed to 800. If you check eBay or other sites, you can get it quite cheap. I broke the LCD once and I can get old parts easily from the net and replace it.

There's another brand Bryton. I haven't seen a unit with map yet from them. There's an importer in BBS selling them. My wife uses the Bryton 20+  . Basic unit. Just gives speed, time etc like the usual cyclometer but can record your ride onto the map. You have to do this only after ride when you plug in and log onto their website. Same like the Garmin Edge 20 and 500 series. I got that used from BBS , and I used it because my wife has 3 bikes and it is easier  and she can plug the Bryton on any bikes she rides as there are no wires and magnet needed, just the unit.  Also when I got that used at RM250, it is so much better and make more sense than an expensive Cateye or Sigma.

Like I tell many riders, it makes more sense to buy a GPS (even a cheap lowest rung model) than to spend more than RM300 on a cyclometer.  icon_rolleyes.gif
