Hi guys, greetings!

I am SerioseCat a beginner adult cycler. I am 32. I usually do jogs, between 4-5km daily whenever its not raining. Until my knees started to show signs of....hurt. So I needed something low impact high calorie-burn and I dont prefer stationary stuff like threadmills/static bikes (unless to build strength, on rainy days) cause i love fresh air, sunlight(and sunburn), wind and everything else outside the house.

By beginner, I dont mean just beginning to start cycling again, I am beginning to start learning how to cycle! Before this month I have almost zero experience on a bicycle, never had a bike during my childhood, always drove a car and not a motorcycle etc.

So i bought a cheap MTB (because they are tough and learn2gears) and learned how to balance and pedal, knowing very well and accepting I (and my bike) would eat the asphalt sooner or later.

So, I loaded my MTB into my Kembara and brought it to a deserted end road (still asphalt) at the edge of my housing estate. I am doing this all alone btw.
Luckily, first few days of doing so I managed to ride without fall. Did stopped short and grazed the wheels/pedals to the curb though.

Then I cycled to the nearby Surau once I can maintain a straight line, stop/start quickly, and able to apply the brakes confidently.

Then I cycled around my Taman. Initially early dawn at 6am so not much cars with helmet, gloves, and front/rear blinking lights. And theres light at the back of my helmet too.

Then i cycled in the afternoons to expose myself to the traffic to build confidence. Had been doing like 2-3km per day when I had my first fall when i hit one of those housing area small tall bumps which are not painted properly.
I tried to stand on the stock slippery pedals and I had some hesitation. Next thing I know I was on the ground impacting my chest with knuckle and knee abrasions. So yeah, it eventually came. My pants and gloves didnt tear surprisingly. And I am quite relieved i didnt injure myself too badly. I was concerned of a pneumothorax due to the chest impact. Hurts like hell.

So I had a Root Cause Analysis- Change the pedals to a more grippier one, wear padded shorts so if i didnt manage to stand in time i can just absorb that evil bump, and get a knee protector. And most importantly do not stop trying. There. Im ready to fight another day lol.

Then I slowly increased my distance bit my bit and I think I am ready to do what I wanted to do all these while- ride on trails/paths (which is safer, more scenic, and adds more distance) like Putrajaya Botanical Gardens and maybe FRIM or anywhere else I can pack and drive a bicycle to.

So next step is to get a good folding bike once I have done my falling dues on the cheap MTB. And start the scenic riding to pump up the spirit!

So thats there, just sharing around my experience as an adult cycling noob. Never too late to try and....fail early and fail often (i think thats something i read along the federal highway).

Any cyclists just starting out like me?

Nice to meet ya all!

Nice exp..
Once you get folding bike, you might need a little time to get used to it as folding bike's steer is light and sensitive, unlike mtb..

Try ride around putrajaya core island (10.9km).. its a bike/jogging trail with no traffic (except joggers and bikers)..

Never give up!!

Thanks for the suggestion. rclxms.gif Once i get myself a foldie i will do some riding there.

Yeah, I heard about the more sensitive steering due to the smaller wheels. So i need to be very very comfortable and confident before I ride an expensive foldie.

My MTB is a 17" frame on 26" wheels while I am 158cm tall. A bike shop said I was riding an oversized bike. I do notice that I can keep my balance fairly well while coasting but pedalling causes instability. Hope whatever difficulty that may cause me translates to better skill.

Hey guys its me, the noob adult cyclist

just got myself a java fit 18 speeder from a shop in klang

sold my mtb off after it served its purpose

now doing regular outer loops around my housing area 5, then 10kms. Familiarizing myself with traffic since there are busy intersections especially late afternoons.

once my front lights come in the post today, will start night riding. and then, outside roads when im ready.

i just have a question for those with java fit's. This bike has telescopic handlebar. If i want to correct alignment of my handlebar vs front wheels, can i just correct using the telescopic stem and clamp? Thanks.

Usually when it is out of alignment (just a little) the cause is when they adjust the bar height and did not hold the bar firmly when they tighten the quick release. So, just loosen it and twist it in-line and hold firmly and tighten the QR.

If this can't be done , then the misalignment is at the headset. Nearest to the headset at the base of the handle post, you see 2 allen bolts. Loosed them a bit and twist the post to align. That's it.

PS/ Don't forget to tighten back the allen bolts ! doh.gif

Thanks etigge! nod.gif

Just got hold of my seller too. He snapped a picture of the bar height clamp and asked me to correct there first, just like you said.

Yeah, I will unclamp/clamp, loosen/tighten everything as per order. Wouldnt want another episode of Man vs Asphalt or Man vs Ditch. laugh.gif

bros here with java fit, have any of you installed mudguards for this bike and what is compatible? I ride around and the sand/mud splash is a nuisance.

Found this one model for suspension seatpost in BBS. Any one using? Seems to be the only model for 33.9mm suspension.

Great input guys, i have an awesome ride last weekend with my wife.
Agreed with you guys about work the hell out with what you have, the result is important and of cause good helmet is important too smile.gif

I was in Stand Up Paddle (SUP) sport for years and i get tired because the availability of SUP location that i do on weekend in klang velley area, sometimes i have to hike with the board to location to do the SUP thingy. I lost 10kg in 2 months on this sport. 12km on this thing is intense (to me) due to upwind, down wind, lake and sea condition. I really love it, now i'm doing bicycle more because i can go anywhere and the setup is much easier than before... really. Currently i'm still doing both, kinda happy about. Just that i need to learn more about the cycling stuff.

Just to share something about my SUP thingy hope you guys don't mind, is was part of my experience and journey that lead me to cycling again.

I am not sure about Vios but I am quite certain the Montague can fit into a Honda City. A friend used to ride a foldable 26 inch mtb . It's called Change bike and it fits in OK. I am sure the Paratrooper or Navigator is about the same size or even smaller after folding.

I used to ride the Dahon Dash and even that when folded is bigger than other normal folding bikes. It can be fitted into the car boot but I find it easier if I lay cheap blanket (IKEA) on the rear seats and put the bike there rather than the car boot.

Would you have any idea whether a 27.5er 15" MTB will fit at the backseat of Proton Saga BLM with front wheels off?

Or maybe both wheels off?

I usually travel with 2 (yes ! two) full sus mountain bike in my back seat with 4 wheels in the boot. SO, I am very sure it can fit in.  biggrin.gif

PS/ I cover the back seat with the IKEA cheap blanket and then flip the mtb over and rest them on the handlebar on the seat. Then I cover the RD cage with a part of the blanket and pull the rear seat belt to hole the frame. I also bought 2 of those sponge (those sold in hardware stores , the mosaic layers use them) and protect the glass from hitting when there's bump.

Thanks man

by car you mean the common sedan, right? Not a Vellfire or those large 'cars'? biggrin.gif

I will be selling my Java Fit 2017 upgraded tyres to Schwalbe Big Apple

Comes along with ori tyres too

Do PM if interested, may be posted to BBS in a few days time

Reason for sale is underutilized after getting MTB. Feel better and ride further/longer on a full size bike.
