Usually dogs left outside are noisy but harmless. The more panicky you are and the faster you pedal makes them chase you even more. When you see a pack barking, observe them but ride slowly and stare at them. They too will be wary of you and not attack. In the event that they do, get to the other side of your bike and use the bike as weapon to ward them off.

As for snatch thief, that's life in the city. I too hate city life, that's why I retire early even if it means living thriftily. Every night I wake up at 4 to 5 am , even till today. I was burglarized twice and any small sound will keep me awake. No regrets moving away from KL. Might be good for you too, since you like village and plantation roads. Plenty here.  biggrin.gif
*
two things that always kept me from doing solo cycling. Dogs and robbers.

i always survey my route with car first, just to make sure there's no dogs along the route, especially those dogs whose job are for guarding. i really have no idea how to deal with dogs. been chased a few times, on public road. what's more annoying is, when you can see the owner in plain sight and doing nothing ranting.gif (some did, but those dogs never obey their master anyway).

robbers, well, that's why i prefer to ride in a group. but, you cant ride in groups all the time. so...

Thanks for info.

I did short tours using Google Map in Vietnam,  Cambodia, Thailand and Indonesia without data. Few years ago, Google Map was not available in Myanmar and I used open source map.

I was warned twice by local not to place my mobile phone on  handle bar in Vietnam as passing motorcyclists would snatch my phone.

Main reason why my phone is in a bag instead of mounted on handlebar.

Damn… everybody cari their phone everywhere…

Dogs are just exited when they see you visit their territory. If you feel uncomfortable, just dismount and stand with the bicycle as the barrier between you and the dog. Swing your bike like a weapon if the launch an attack at you. That's when all your effort in lightening your bike come into play.
Don't panic, animal can smell your fear…
Dogs like to trail you on the left side, snd attack your left heel, primal instinct I guest. I enjoy kicking them in the face with one swift kick with my heel. That will hault their aggrassion promptly. Works every time.
Another advantage of not using kasut lekat.
I enjoy a pack of dogs running behind me barking… feels like riding a kapchai with very loud exhaust.

I love off roads and vilage roads.  I seldom blast my air horn against dogs.

Once my friend fell into a oil palm plantation drain when we were chased by dogs. He didn't look at the road instead looking at chasing dogs. Now he carries a RM6 toy gun which trigger into a match stick. Makes sound louder than fire crackers.

I carry a metal retractable baton for safety. Once a motorcycle pillon rider pulled my waist pouch in Kepong.

does air horns work on dogs? mind sharing which air honn do you use..i'll probably want to get one if it s really effectives against dogs. im not as gutsy as bro kenc or etigge yet. i know some dogs are harmless, but nevertheless, i couldnt put my bet that all dogs that i may encounter will behave like that. dogs will always be dog. better be prepared for safety.

Boss, when you buy the fnhon frame, does it come with headset bearing installed? I read installing the headset bearing is not easy.

Now Itchy thinking buy a KA2018 back and slowly build.

Stones. Either pack some in your pocket or pick up from the floor. Thow a few at the dogs will stop them instantly.

Some jokers carry water pistol and others lastic. Which I consider over doing.

Pepper spray, baton, parang… don't la… wait mata mata tangkap.

Honestly, you gotta be brave to keep the dogs at bay. They smell your fear… if you can't man up… best cycle in your trainer at home. Sure safe wan.

Yes, dogs can feel fear. I seldom blast my air horn. I do not speed away. Cycled at my normal speed. Sometimes at old men speed. I don't look at the dogs. Pretended nothing but I am always on guard. I let the dog came as close as 2 feet from my foot. Then I stopped cyling and had my foot on highest position om same side as dog.
I would then shout loud and blast my air horn. I do not have fear on dogs except pit bull. Many years ago I attended dogs fight gambling in Rawang.

You don't really need the specialist tools if you do once in a while. What you can do is go to a hardware shop or better still a 'nut and bolt shop' , get a 20mm x 8 inch nut with 2 corresponding bolts. Also since the headset of the Dahon is 44mm in diameter, get 4 washers with 50mm diameter which the nut can pass through. That's the tool that is needed.

First, set the nut with washer on top of the headtube (install the bottom one first) , then align the headset bearing mount (take out the bearings first, off course) at the bottom of the headtube. The 8 inch nut will be protuding from below and put on the washer and bolt it with hand first until it is about to get tight. Then realign everything. Start bolting the nut and bolt tighter and this will press the headset into the headtube. Once done, unscrew everything and do the same with the top headset mount.

Before I use this way, I used to hammer in the headset mounting with rubber mallet. Works too but the nut and bolt way is safer and more assured.

Ahh, thank you. That will do too. I can get long bolt no problem. My mechanic will have such tools.
