Hi. I have recently graduated with a Accounting and Finance degree and am joining a Big 4's business tax advisory in this September and planning to take a professional qualification as a part time student. I am considering between ICAEW and ACCA.

1) how tough is it to work and study part time?
2) Is there any suggestion or advice for which professional qualification to go for? The reason why I am contemplating is because ICAEW gives me exposure to UK tax while ACCA gives exposure to Malaysian tax. I have basic knowledge on UK tax (really basic) and minimal knowledge on malaysia's corporate tax/business tax advisory. Will it be very tough to apply UK tax knowledge into Malaysia's tax system?

I am willing to put effort to learn.

Hope to hear your wise suggestions

>ACCA or ICAEW?
If I were you, I will take ACCA first then ICAEW.  I heard you cant be promoted to manager level without ACCA. So yea thats this.

> how tough is it to work and study part time?
-You might get very tired during class after work, so remember to get some coffee or tea. Usually part time course consists night and weekend class.
-Planning is everything. And make sure at least spend some time to study every day. Dont wait until the last month you will fail. As an ACCA student, make sure you do alot practices. It helps.

>MY tax or UK tax?
If you are working in malaysia, shouldnt you be taking malaysia tax? Plus thats alot changes in local tax recently, you have to keep yourself up to date as well.

Thank you for your suggestion on how to juggle between work and part time studies. I will constantly keep my studies in check biggrin.gif

I agree that pursuing MY tax is essential since I am working in malaysia.

If that is the case, may I know how will my Malaysian tax knowledge be applicable If i wish to transfer to Singapore in the future? The reason i am asking this is because I noticed several tax consultants have successfully transferred to Singapore Big4's tax division in this "Big 4 Recruitment Drive_v3" thread.

You can still opt for UK tax variant in ACCA.

The debate between ICAEW and ACCA are usually heavily discussed among fresh grads and students.

Instead, employers are looking at your skill sets and performance. That's their priority. Choose whichever prof qualifications you feel comfortable with. It's the same thing.

Even Big Four now prefers non-accounting graduates such as engineering and IT (although they expect them to pursue a professional accounting qualification upon employing them)
