Hi guys, advice needed.

Im currently in EY audit dept for close to 4 years, recently promoted to supervisor and leading a listed December year end job, which will definitely stretch to June or July 2020. At this juncture, Im planning to leave audit because of 3 reasons:

1) 2 papers left (ACCA) which i don't have the time for the next 2 sittings and will definitely miss the next promotion to Manager.
2) I dont really like audit and dont see myself in this line for long term
3) Interested in trying Advisory (PI) - Performance Improvement

Nevertheless, I've decided to stay for another peak to gain the experience of leading a huge listed engagement which I think would be better for me and my CV as well.
But, I have few concerns as well

1) If i transfer after my current audit project ended, i don't mind retaining as Supervisor but is it possible to attain Manager title?
2) Will it be better to apply to transfer now? (will be a jerk to my team cuz abandoning them)
3) Is it really hard to transfer into other department internally?
4) What are the prospects of PI in the long run?

Many thanks!

Will completion of your ACCA a pre-requisite to being considered for promotion to Manager? Many have the same thoughts as you [me as well] as I took it as a stepping stone for me to pursue other things/career rotations.

There is no loyalty in audit line, and I understand your feeling of not wanting to leave your colleagues in a 'mess' by opting to leave now instead of after the audit is done. No harm looking out now as there's no guarantee when your next job offer will come along.

As for the transfer, seems like your heart is set on an internal transfer to the Advisory team. Do you have any contacts or acquaintances there, who might know of your interest? And of course, some managers may not like it, but be frank and share what your plans are [i.e. keen to move and try other roles]. Some managers might convince you to stay on, some may ask you to follow what you want... So it's up to you.

Hi, I just went to EY and GT for interview, does anyone here know how long it takes them to reply? Because i feel like quit my current job...

Do they even inform you if you failed the interview?

Thanks in advance.

If fail, usually no news. Maybe try to call after a week to follow up on your application.

All the best!

Hi guys, I am a fresh Accounting and Finance graduate from UOL in collaboration with HELP Uni. Scored First Class and currently pursuing professional qualification under ACCA with 3 professional papers left (provided I pass the last 2 papers that I sat in earlier December 2019). I am 23 this year, looking to apply for audit associate positions in Big 4 company or big 5 (bdo). However things didnt go well as planned, just few days back, I received my first rejection letter from KPMG without even doing online test. And no replies from Deloitte or EY yet (submitted documents to them few days ago). Wondering if I should continue to wait for their replies or start small? smile.gif

I felt loss ever since I have spent almost a month sending resume to companies and none of them actually called back, and 2 of my close friends got offered in one of the big4 in last December 2019.

Btw, I have my resume checked by friends as well as my previous lecturer in Uni.

Try expanding to other audit firms too. Baker Tilly, etc. No harm applying for more instead of waiting for that big4 ticket to arrive. You seem to have impressive credentials from your alma mater and quite active in clubs. That's a plus point as well in terms of making you stand out.

Keep trying. Audit turnover is always there and new faces are coming in each time. Peak period for audit is already underway for those companies with Dec year end.

This is on the assumption that there's no attrition during this period. Unlikely that people may stay on in audit line especially if they are still looking to job hop and move out from audit/assurance line.

Hey everyone, I'm 9 months into audit in KP.

So far I would say that I've been allocated to quite manageable engagements compared to the rest of my peers (which I'm thankful for).

However, I feel like I've been doing mostly the same thing. Tieing and ticking figures here and there, vouching, etc. I honestly feel quite demotivated af if this continues down the line.

So I've been thinking of switching to advisory/internal consultant after another peak period, but I'm not sure how that will go about since covid and all. One possible exit is to enter into the advisory arm of a mid tier firm by leveraging on my big 4 experience.

For the ones who did a similar transition, could you share your thoughts and experiences? It would be very helpful to hear them. Thanks
*
Btw, you're only 9 months in the role.

What is your expectation? Have you done performance review with your bosses and made it known you would like to handle even more things? Asides from the usual vouching/casting etc. It takes time to tackle all those things. And even in same audit firms, but different managers and seniors, some may even just chuck you the whole dormant/active/subsi accounts and ask you to wrap it up vs a team that has no staffing issues and seniors are still around to handle the key areas.

Which would you prefer?

Yup, I'm aware that I might sound quite naive, that's why I'm asking for inputs.

Currently I'm holding 2 dormant entity files and doing their FS, aside from assisting my seniors on work done in the main company under a group structure. My performance so far has been quite okay, usually hovering around above expectation/at expectation. I did mentioned that I was open to more responsibilities, but my Performance Manager feels that I shouldn't rush into things and just go with the flow.

Expectations wise, I can't say much since this is my first job. But I think as long as it's doable and the challenge is gradually increased, I'm fine with that
*
That's a good attitude to have bro.

Continue to do well and excel and the performance reviews will take care of that. Helps if you're adept with your work and also on good terms with your colleagues and seniors.

Can see you're quite capable of handling those smaller FS on your own so I'm sure eventually your seniors/managers will start giving you some more stuffs to do. I guess a good point is if you find yourself done and probably have some time to spare, try asking around your team to see if they have other tasks that could be assigned out? Every little helps.

I also want to ask about what's the difference lifestyle, working hours and working environment between an auditor and tax in busy season and non-busy season( details if can) , and how constantly do an auditor travel with the team?
*
It's good that you seem to have earmarked a career in audit even whilst in secondary school. So, focus on getting good results for your diploma/degree/CAT-ACCA/Oxford Brookes program and once the time comes - hope you manage to get into Big 4.

Peak and non-peak - well, during my time in audit line, some jobs I had to work till 3-4am... It's tiring for sure but one thing about audit is the people you work with. Stress is there la just how you handle it. Not sure whether audit line now still have those ungodly hours though cos I already left audit many years ago to enter Shared Services/Commercial line.

Just go with the flow.

As for travel, it pretty much depends where your client is based. If it's Klang Valley, then you can either carpool or take public transport etc. Outstation/oversea audits are there too and depends whether you're in those engagement teams. During my time I didn't get to go abroad, but at least I managed to visit places like Langkawi, Kemaman, JB, Labuan etc for stock takes...

Hey everyone, I've got a thought that just crossed my mind.

Would it be considered as career suicide if I were to jump from Big 4 audit to a mid tier firm (ie Crowe, Mazars) for another role?

I was looking through job vacancies on websites, and some of the positions offered looked quite interesting, like financial accounting advisory since an internal transfer within my current firm isn't possible.

My current situation is that I'm 10 months into the job, and currently holding 3 audit files on my own (2 dormant, 1 active). I don't mind the working hours but it's been getting repetitive imo. Would like to know y'all opinions.
*
Just go for it if the job scope is something you're keen on.

Big 4 is still Big 4. Image, prestige, job exposure etc but who's to say you can't get an even more rewarding exposure/challenge in your next role?

Btw, 10months in your current role, or 10 months overall in your first job? If you do stay on, wouldn't the chances of getting promoted to the next level seem more attainable?

Oh hi again,

10 months in my current role/first job. I'm due for a promotion in the next promotion cycle. I agree with you, but there's always that small voice of doubt saying "don't leave" haha
*
That's good to hear. Probably wait a bit longer until you get your promotion, and with that, a potential salary jump, then look out?

Hopefully things are better once you start climbing up too.

It's ok, hence the dilemma you're having isn't it?

I would probably advise you to stay on just a lil' bit longer and get that promotion first, and hope things work out from there onwards.

If there's one thing, never regret whatever decision you opt/didn't opt for cos I'm sure things will work out eventually, one way or another.

Good luck!
