Currently I am thinking whether to work in KL's Big 4 or other small towns' Big4. Will I get better career pathways if I work at KL Big4?
*
More exposure to complicated sections and issues and lucrative industries
You get to audit public listed co or major banks
Higher pay
Better audit methodology

So yes, better career path due to steeper learning curve

Accounting standards wise, I believe I answered them what they wanted - standard codes, accounting treatments, double entries, consolidations, equity accounting, deferred tax
But I believe the ONLY gap is the audit methodology because they seem unsatisfied with the way I answered them.....

Yeah... I'm currently waiting for the reply from a mid-tier firm....
*
What exactly did they ask and what exactly did you answer?
I'm trying to understand the difference in the audit methodology

it took KPMG and EY just 1 week for their replies after attended both of their interview sessions in the same week. what i can say is, EY adjusted their offer and KPMG remains the same.
*
I guess you will choose EY?

If so, welcome

QUOTE(dasecret @ Dec 7 2015, 09:33 AM)
Audit methodology should be standardise for all global network firms
I guess the main difference is working with different people on a variety of experience - the companies in KL tends to be bigger, you get more variety, they do more exotic things compared to branch offices that are more straightforward or standard

But I was told hours are better in branch offices, less traffic jam... so I guess it boils down to what you want
I knew I have to work in KL, there's too limited career opportunities in my hometown, after audit firm, what's next? Or even within audit firms, opportunity to go up is less
*
Yes audit methodology goes by the firm
I should have said 'audit approach'

Depends on what you want, really can't learn much from small firm.. Too limited exposure.. Esp to oil and gas and banking.. They're all in KL

Traffic jam is sth you need to learn to manage.. Yes working hours can be very bad but it also means you are learning more and at a faster pace

Newbies should place learning as their top priority..
After a few years you can balik kampung

Not to mention you get to be completely independent when you stay away from home.. I think it's sth that someone really should go through as a phase of their life.it'll make you grow and tougher

But still... Some people prefer to live comfortably at home

If i plan to join other industry after audit firm, will the employer really care whc branch do I from?

They will ask you about your experience

What you tell them about your experience can very well depend on your exposure too

But I'm a local graduate. I guess it's kinda hard with that kind of results.

Btw anyone has any advice on which professional papers the big 4 would most likely prefer? Acca or icaew?

Currently my mind is set on icaew but I heard big4 are quite reluctant on it as they would have to let me off for months to attend classes. Can anyone verify on that?

Thanks
*
Never try never know

They don't have preference but if they sponsor you they will get to choose which prof exam you'll do.. Local grads mostly ACCA

EY firm policy is that we can't say no to approving study leave especially for first time attempt.. . Length of the leave depends on the exam you're taking and whether it's first attempt... Icaew gets longest study leave

Sometimes the interviewer submits the interview assessment form late to HR for them to proceed

I see so you're saying that if you're doing 2nd attempt then you'll get less study leave?

Hmm I have heard of cases where local grads get to do icaew
*

QUOTE(tatabahasa @ Dec 29 2015, 06:09 PM)
I interned in one of the big4 firms, and I believe I did well, just that the HR exec wasn't satisfied with my attitude when I first talked to him. He said that I sounded mad, and on the other hand, the other HR guy always pretended like he did not read my message enquiring on job opportunities+made me sound like I was forcing the firm to offer me a permanent placement, which was the reason why I appeared angry when I approached the exec.

I mean, it wasn't really my fault that they didn't entertain us, vacation trainees, at all. Now my friends got offers at the firm, yet I get nothing. There's actually one thing I'm sure of, I did well in a tax competition organised by the firm (which was the main factor that made me stand out from the rest), and my friends they didn't get anything or helped out at the competition as committee+I was even closer to landing a job as I knew the 'main players' at the office who introduced me to the HR manager.
*
Sometimes the attitude matters more than the performance because obedient employees are good employees cause they take orders well

Not saying you're wrong but it is always good to approach things tactfully (even though the person you're dealing with is an ass).
Imagine this, you already got off the wrong foot with HR before landing a permanent job at the big four..that doesn't sound very nice

What you can do is contact the manager that you've worked with..if he's fine with giving you a job, maybe he can give the HR a push

QUOTE(tatabahasa @ Dec 29 2015, 06:26 PM)
I've submitted applications on Dec18&19 to two of the big firms. Now I still get no reply.

I made myself clear in my cover letters that I'd like to work in JB. I wonder if they have smaller offices and lesser vacancies/openings at JB branches. Is that why my applications are still pending?

I planned to start in a really small firm, working as a part-time audit clerk in my hometown while waiting for their replies. But would it be better if I applied to medium firms in JB? Do they have even smaller space and lesser opportunities? I've turned down offers coming from KL big 4, just to wait for interview appointments+to get a job in Singapore.

I was even lucky enough to be called by a big 4 recruiter to arrange for an interview appointment (previously, I rejected its internship offer) yet I was waiting for replies from Sg firms, so I told her I'd like to wait two to three weeks and to tell her the time when I make my decision, and when I finally emailed her at the end of the second week, she replied by saying that I needed to wait while my job application was being processed (and here I thought she called initially to fix an interview date and time with me??), and eventually the firm sent me an official email, stating that they decided to not process my job application, I was totally at a loss. Now I've applied to its JB firm, will I still get a reply from the firm?
*
So do you wanna work in SG or JB?
When you submit your application online, you should apply for the job at respective location.. if you want a position at JB, you should apply to that job code (assuming it is open for application). Why not you call the HR up to find out why your application is still pending? They are the best person to answer your query

JB firm or KL firm..really shouldn't matter..each location with the same position should have a specific job code.. if you apply for JB job, i assume the application will be processed by JB HR...after all, they are totally different branches

Chances are always first come first serve, if you decline or withhold their invitation to the interview, they can always pass it on to another candidate..

I am currently a student pursing Finance and Economics and I am just wondering if there are any specific date or timeline for internship recruitment from these big 4s.

How much is fresh grad starting salary in Big 4 now? Last I heard all paying roughly the same amount between the range of 2.7 - 2.8k. Is this accurate?
*
3k for EY inclusive of allowances
If you join with professional papers completed, extra RM250 (if i'm not mistaken) up to A2

Definitely big4.

I know people from both big4 and mid-tier firms... With the same  amount of years in experience, you can see that the mid-tier ones have barely any exposure or experience.
Just apply, they're open all the time.
Depends which dept you join, my friends with ACCA joined with 3.6k (not audit of course)
*
Non audit position of course won't have standardised pay

QUOTE(Danielyo @ Mar 31 2016, 05:16 AM)
what are tips for newbie in big 4?would appreciate for some insights...
*
Be responsible and take ownership of your assigned tasks
Be smart..always refer to prior year files before asking questions but don't follow prior year work blindly
Ask anything that you're not sure of, we are freaking scared of juniors who assume they know stuff and pandai pandai buat their own way later need to redo
Anything you not sure important or not just tell your seniors because we are also freaking scared of juniors who don't communicate important matters like issues
Be independent... don't ask your senior to sort out simple administration stuff for you when you can easily do it on your own, your senior is mostly there to help you technically and help you grow and keep you motivated and you're there to learn and reduce their burden
Be diplomatic.. if you have disagreements with your superiors.. talk nicely even if theyre being unreasonable otherwise you'll suffer in the future
Take instructions well and deliver effectively to avoid repeat mistakes and scolding from superiors

Anyone know anyone from big 4 who made the jump to Singapore big 4 and know exactly how they did it? Must you know someone there? Or is that insufficient and depends on luck? Or do they just apply through website?

Feels like chances are low these days..
*
yea most of my colleagues made it to PwC SG.
You don't really need to know anybody for you to be hired by Big 4 SG however it is good to have connections within these firms so that you can get the information first hand.
For example, when big 4 SG are open for application, you will get the first hand information if you know someone from within the firms and you can apply right away to increase your chances
Your connections can help you to forward your resume to the HR but you will still need to apply through the portal

by the time u applied it is likely that may intake is full already, so they could only fit u into sept intake as they are running group interview. i applied the rest of the big4 but no reply yet, am gonna call EY and PwC so that they could update me. im gonna forego Deloitte cus they're group interview too which i assume would take quite some time to organise. if still no, i'll turn to small/medium firms. will still stick to audit doe due to personal interests
*
Yes do call.
When I applied to EY, I waited for a week before I made the call to EY HR.
They did a phone screening and offered me an interview on the spot.

im pretty sure EY's phone interview is one of those strength and weaknesses interviews yes? or have u been interviewed about another thing?
*
For audit. Phone screening for me was just screening my resume, asking me questions about qualifications and stuff like that

Interview questions like strength and weaknesses will be later when you have face to face interview with someone of audit managerial role.

Hi pehrac,

I also had applied for audit position in EY lately and they haven't reply my application after 2 weeks. Do you mind share some of your experiences on the ways they get back to you?

Call them up to follow up

I called them after waiting for a week with no reply
That's when they did the phone screening on the spot
