Hi!

To those working full time in audit and attending classes during the weekends, what is it like? What advice would you give as I will be doing the same thing? Could you maybe share how is your schedule roughly like?

Thanks! biggrin.gif

Is like hell, one of the toughest thing I have to do in life

If you do those weekend full day classes only, you must make sure you work late on weekdays to finish all your work so that you can focus on classes during weekends

I did combination of night classes + saturday class
For the 3 core papers, I have to leave work at 5+pm (no car, gotta take public transport), get to college, attend class. Finish class tapao dinner/supper. After that continue working at home until 1am or late... On saturday attend full day class, sunday catch up on work again
No life lor....

But 3 papers also means 3 weeks study leave, + all the annual leave and OT leave I took almost 2 months off to study. So not so bad la. Just make sure you pass at first attempt

Hi guys, my friend told me that she applied for fresh grad in EY and they get back to her within few days by mail that her application is incomplete. After submitting complete with resume, cover letter and transcript, EY emailed her and told her that her application won't be proceed to the next stage. Is it because of her results, resume or cover letter? Should she email EY and inquire?

For PwC usually how long does it take them to reply after online application?

If you are up for a lot of different environment and client, go for EY.
IT Risk is quite enjoyable, not too extreme long working hours. But that all boils down to what client and which industry they are in.

Anything you wanted to know? I am in the IT Risk.

Hi, thanks for the response! biggrin.gif

Yeah, that's what my auditor friend said as well. Which firm are you in? If you don't mind me asking.

And accounting background can enter IT Risk? Is it common? Got quite a few questions actually hehe

I worked full time and took the CFA. I do not do weekend classes. What I do is I take 1 month leave just before the exam and cramp everything in that 1 month.

Worked well for the past 2 years, coming June will hopefully be the last sitting.
*
To be able to cramp everything in one month and pass the CFA papers, you must be really smart! But wouldn't taking one month worth of leave burn your entire leave quota for the year? Means you could only do this once a year?

I can't afford to take one paper a year or I'll end up studying for 5-7 years...

But thanks for the insight! All the best for your last paper! biggrin.gif

Hey what paper are you taking? Wouldn't taking 2 months off burn your entire leave quota for the year?

I did ACCA. Well, for the overtime I worked, the firm allow for it to be taken as time off. And yeah, all my annual leave entitlement is used up for study. That's why no life. But get it over once n for all. Repeating paper is not funny when you are senior in charge for large engagements

Add 150 fixed allowance for all above to get ur gross salary.

Option 2: I always wanted to try out big four, although now I am scared by the late working hours and the underpay problems stated by many of the forumers,

Regards,
mmm92

Underpay problem? Pleasee.

You should be grateful because for Accounting grad that working in Big 4 company, they are considered lucky to get salary RM2500 and above for fresh grad. yawn.gif

Other industries get lower than that. And some of them starting pay RM1700. Still thinking about underpay problem?

Hello! IT Risk, i have been telling my juniors, as long as you know how to read and willing to learn, then yes, even accounting background can join. But for more technical roles (eg: Pentest), then it's hard. smile.gif

Hey guys Im wondering how is the consulting line in the BIG 4s? I heard consulting is not their niche and their consulting is "cincai cincai" half-past six type of work?

Which BIG 4 got good consulting department?
*
Well consulting is a big word, generally there is 2 level of consulting. One is the higher tier where you deal with C-suite executives. The other one which forms the majority is the mid & lower tier where you do a lot of grunt work. I think some forumers have clearly explained the pros & cons of both of them.

From the perception point of view, Big4 will not be able to match MBBs in terms of pedigree in management consulting. If you want to check the difference, you can see the entry requirement. MBBs take in people mainly from Ivy leagues while Big4 considers a larger set of applicants. MBB associate gets around >US5000 & above. That is senior manager / directors pay in Big4 now?

From practicality point of view, not much PLC is willing or can afford MBB consultants. It’s like asking you to choose a Michelin star restaurant versus a very popular established restaurant. Big4 consultants are more popular due to the “all in one roof” offering, ie: tax, audit and consulting. It’s harder to get to advisory side of Big4 than audit due to the size of department and business strategy. Audit client is recurring but advisory is project basis. Tax is in the middle.
If you want financial advisory, IB will be more relevant. They are involved in the big corporate exercise like IPO and M&A. Those that they did not want, they will outsource to smaller banks or big4s.

Skills wise, this is a very subjective area. Some said better go big4 bcos you learn everything (be it micro or macro). Some said go IB or consulting bcos you play with the big boys and do macro stuff.

Which Big4 got good consulting dept? That one is even harder to answer. Maybe try apply interview and see which one is harder? Lol

I did audit and yes, my firm does not sponsor my CFA. All my bonus money went to CFA exam fees.

can i ask do u take P4 as your ACCA optional papers?

If I study P4 before, will it be very helpful when come to CFA?
*
Yeah I did P4. It does help because there are some overlaps between the two curriculum, but not a lot.

I think maybe the advisory side may sponsor. IB also mostly no. Bcos they know people will cabut once they finish the exam. If you did well in CFA (> 70 every subject), your exam fees will be waived.

I hardly think CF is applicable in audit. Mostly for fund managers or analyst.

yeap, advisory side. but i joined the audit side already. may be too late for me to transfer to advisory and i do hope that I have audit background before i pursue CF which I always want to join
*
I am currently in CF (less than 1 year), and I can say that a lot of the skills you gained in audit are transferable (e.g., ability to read and understand financial statements).

I have seen quite a few auditors who transitioned into CF where I work. How long have you been in audit? I have seen audit managers joining CF, but they have to start from scratch though.

IB CF hardly requires CFA knowledge. I don’t think it’s a prerequisite to join as working experience matters more to them. There are 3 major skills they need: legal, project management and finance background. From the attitude perspective, they need someone who is very diligent (why they might like auditor). But if you are talking about Big4 CF, it’s different as it focuses more on due diligence side. Bcos Big4 does not have CF license to operate as principal adviser for corporate exercise. That’s why you don’t see Big4 name in prospectus for IPO or major M&A.

The closest work from audit to CF is drafting account?

I have got a problem in applying for KPMG(PJ) audit associate .
Previously I had submitted via online application for Penang KPMG in Jan.
However, I changed up my mind and noticed that there is position available in Petaling Jaya on the website which the job application is open from April to May,
but I am unavailable to submit new application for the job posted as the system prompt me that I have applied for the same position within 6 months.
Any ways to overcome such problem?
