Hi there,

1. For EY, is there a difference between graduate programme and internship?

2. Let say graduate programme and internship are the same thing, can I apply for both?

Currently I'm looking for internship but I'm interested in EY's graduate programme in audit. At the same time, I saw the internship position as well.

That's all I wanna ask. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

For 1. - Graduate programme translates to an associate/staff position, basically a full time job whereas the internship is for 3 months.
If you would like to try out advisory services (Now termed EY consulting)/Tax you may apply for an internship there also

For 2. - No visibility on this so I cant answer on that.

Hope this helps!

Okay, I failed my online assessment and I don't know why. It is a situational test.

May I know the differences between all Big 4 advisory departments in Singapore? Which sub-branches under advisory do you recommend me to transfer to as I was an ex-senior auditor in one of the Big 4.

The culture at deloitte is good. Professional yet everyone can be friends (rest assured, no politics in the firm), making jokes (not offensive ones) even with senior management (this part is for tax department especially the area where my desk was). You'll surely like it--no one is unlikeable and they treat you (a newbie) sorta like a part of them. But job performance has to be maintained and improved as time goes by the gl (group leader) will talk to you when she feels that you do not exert 100% to ur work (since shes the one checking everything which goes out from the group and you're supposed to complete ur work on time, especially during peak). As for audit, Im x too sure, but another part i like about deloitte is that the KL office building is very new (moved in 2013 i heard), working in a whole new office (the toilets are all new too, fragrant🌸) kinda refreshes my mind  biggrin.gif and as for internal firm services, you gotta need to explore yourself, hopefully the hr wont get to u. Anyway, deloitte is a good firm to work with and you ask for worklife balance? Not sure if this counts, but the firm has free movie screenings for its staff every month at ecurve/one u+considerably flexible working hours (flexi-fridays for tax). Doesn't it sound good?

Are u still working at Deloitte? And as a tax associate/Specialist?
Im recently graduated and i wanted to seek advice for both TAX OR AUDIT before deciding which path i should go. Although, im more interested in TAXATION.

Anyone who's accountant please also advice and help me out. Im currently doing research on this.
Than you

Have you ever experienced working in the Tax department before?
I interned in Deloitte's Corporate Tax division a while back, and I have to say, its nothing like how I imagined it to be.
You have to do a surprising amount of talking, and preparing Tax Comps is rarely as easy and simple as how you did it in class.
Its tough, but I do think it becomes easier the more you do it. I liked that they treat me like an actual staff during my internship...
But at the same time, it can be a bit too much. Silly me for coming in during PEAK PERIOD.
Speaking of which, Peak Period in Tax was....an experience, for sure. But what comes afterwards are peaceful times in the office.
September is probably the best stress-free month if you're working in Tax.

Tax:
- Pretty much a Deskjob. Come in at 9, sit at your workstation, work and leave (ideally) at 5. Dont be fooled tho; seniors who leave early often take their work home.
- You work in the office. Get to enjoy cool Deloitte perks like Ice Cream day, Movie Night, etc.
- The office being in TTDI is great. Lots of restaurants to try out. You'll get fat easily if you're not careful. But seriously, really love being in TTDI.
- During peak period, Deloitte gives you 2 weeks of free Dinners. DINNERS. Which means you're staying in the office way past 5pm.

Audit:
- You're often out and about at the clients place. When you're in the office, you dont have your own workstation. I see the auditors working at any empty tables they can find. Some of them even work or chilling on the floor.
- Since you're out most of the time, you're missing out on those Deloitte events. I heard auditors are too tired to join Movie Night. Prefer to go home and sleep.
- Get to travel, meet with lots of different people, learn about different businesses and how they operate. You can escape the monotony of a deskjob, but its tiring.
- You're given travel allowances. During peak periods, Deloitte will allocate you free meals for a month or two.

Its hard to say which path is the best path for you. IMO, you need to try it out yourself and see if you like it. I really like Tax. I still do. But now I'm curious to try my hand at Audit.

Hey everyone, I'm 9 months into audit in KP.

So far I would say that I've been allocated to quite manageable engagements compared to the rest of my peers (which I'm thankful for).

However, I feel like I've been doing mostly the same thing. Tieing and ticking figures here and there, vouching, etc. I honestly feel quite demotivated af if this continues down the line.

So I've been thinking of switching to advisory/internal consultant after another peak period, but I'm not sure how that will go about since covid and all. One possible exit is to enter into the advisory arm of a mid tier firm by leveraging on my big 4 experience.

For the ones who did a similar transition, could you share your thoughts and experiences? It would be very helpful to hear them. Thanks

Btw, you're only 9 months in the role.

What is your expectation? Have you done performance review with your bosses and made it known you would like to handle even more things? Asides from the usual vouching/casting etc. It takes time to tackle all those things. And even in same audit firms, but different managers and seniors, some may even just chuck you the whole dormant/active/subsi accounts and ask you to wrap it up vs a team that has no staffing issues and seniors are still around to handle the key areas.

Which would you prefer?

Evening, thank you so much for spending time in replying. I've tried to apply for a post in Deloitte via their main portal to no avail. Reason is that whenever i tried to click on the ''APPLY'' button, it didnt work at all. How did you even submit your application before?

I really am interested in Taxation. However, I need to think of my prospect in the future as tax is rather a specialising career. I’m worried that once i choose this path, the opportunity to venture outside to other country in the future would be limited since different countries have different law and regulations.

Many suggested to start with audit bcs it would be great to have audit knowledge first if I wanted to have the learning curve as Audit may teach me more than just technical skill. I'm still thinking and researching.

Free meals? that's so good of Deloitte. Can save money on food then.

Yup, I'm aware that I might sound quite naive, that's why I'm asking for inputs.

Currently I'm holding 2 dormant entity files and doing their FS, aside from assisting my seniors on work done in the main company under a group structure. My performance so far has been quite okay, usually hovering around above expectation/at expectation. I did mentioned that I was open to more responsibilities, but my Performance Manager feels that I shouldn't rush into things and just go with the flow.

Expectations wise, I can't say much since this is my first job. But I think as long as it's doable and the challenge is gradually increased, I'm fine with that

Hmm, I dont seem to have any problems in applying via their usual Deloitte Careers page. So I cant help you there. Maybe try using a different browser?

Yes, Tax is a specialised career, and if you're still at a relatively young age, its best to not pigeon-hole yourself in one field completely. Starting with Audit is a good advice to heed imo. But there's nothing wrong with going into Tax first and then transitioning into Audit later on. When you've had enough of Tax, you can always ask your manager and HR about transitioning into Audit. With the current COVID19 situation, I'd honestly take whatever I can get when it comes to getting a job from the Big 4. If you applied for both Audit and Tax but only got the job offer for Tax, I say take the job. If you get an offer for both Audit and Tax, then I have to agree with others and recommend that you start out with Audit. It is the most eye-opening, horizon-broading, mind-expanding work out of the two...and also the most exhausting. Which is why you should start with it. If you find that you dont like the Audit work-style, then take comfort in the fact that you've gone through it and that you can look forward to a Deskjob in Tax.

Worth noting; A senior of mine said that if you've graduated and you're looking to Intern in Audit... Don't. You wont get to learn much in just 3-6 months. Instead, apply for an actual Audit Associate position and work your ass off for 2-3 years. Its tiring, but at least you'll learn more and the pay would be worth it.

Free meals is nice lah. Think other Big 4s also do the same. Only during peak periods tho and only for Dinner. Lunch you still have to pay for yourself.
