Abolition and replacement of the 457 visa – Government reforms to employer sponsored skilled migration visas

On 18 April 2017, the Government announced that the Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457 visa) will be abolished and replaced with the completely new Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa in March 2018.

The TSS visa programme will be comprised of a Short-Term stream of up to two years and a Medium-Term stream of up to four years and will support businesses in addressing genuine skill shortages in their workforce and will contain a number of safeguards which prioritise Australian workers.
This new visa is part of the Government’s significant reform package to strengthen the integrity and quality of Australia’s temporary and permanent employer sponsored skilled migration programmes.

Since you mentioned Malaysian with a degree from an Australian university, I assume it's done via a twinning/partner program. If he does not have PR, the chance to get a job is pretty much zero.

This is good news for Actual PR holders, will clean up the market. PR holders will have a better chance of securing employment then compete with 457.

Those who intend to apply for pr 189/190 please hurry, i suspect there will be significant tightening of this soon.

since july last year, several professions are on the watch list, for review and potential removal from the sol...that page has been removed, as recent events has overtaken...

iirc, these includes engineers, doctors, accountants and lawyers...

they review this yearly, and a new sol (now mltssl) is issued in july....we will wait for the july revision to see what they have removed....

Okay so after I do an IELTS for RM800, the next step would be submitting documents right?
Are they all can be submitted in electronic form or do I still need to do postage of hardcopies?
Finally if an EOI is responded to, in state sponsored visa, that means they will definitely have a place for me? The accomadation and so on for job are they arranged as well?

I've just lodged my 189 visa last month as an exit plan.

The job market outlook for mechanical engineers aren't looking too healthy at the moment, not only in Australia but all over. Planning to make my move once things start to pick up.

Any mechanical engineers here who's made the move carrying along 5 - 8 years worth of experience? Care to share your job hunt experience?

I do have contacts but generally refrain from recommending people I don't know personally, it's just my policy. But I can give you this tip, if you're mechanical try CAPE and if electrical try Monadelphous. They're heavily searching for people now.

To hire a person in the construction/OnG business is costly, takes a lot of time and so on. So HR people don't like to be dicked around with candidates who aren't serious.

Here we have a system called ERMS run by Bright People Tech, it's a database of every potential candidate, their skills, their record and why they leave a company. Nearly all the high paying jobs use this database.

HR people and Supervision can designate a person as "3", meaning "We do not wish to hire this individual given the chance again", after that, might as well go back to Malaysia or work at Maccas.

2 = "We have no negative feedback regarding this individual"
1 = "We would hire this individual again given the chance"

It's also a crosslinked database, so they can catch if you're lying on your resume, your previous qualifications (which they tie into the USI system), your supervisors and so on. Supervisors can leave comments as well I heard.

Short version. Took me (main, IT) and partner (sub, Marketing) 1.5 years to prep all our docs (busy + procrastination) for EOI submission to 4 states for 190 nomination (too low points to attempt 189). We engaged agent. Could have DIY-ed, but no regrets. Invited by NSW. Took 1 month to submit visa application. Visa granted after 4 months.
Don't think ACT does 489. (?)
