If my passport is expiring, should I renew it or only do it when I need to travel? Is the prices the same?

Also, will the VISAs get cancelled because I did not renew my passport?

Renew when you want to travel since the passport renewal nowadays is fast

Visa usually will not expire. You just need to bring the expired visa along to show you still have valid visa

If you do extend for only 1 year, the extension date is 1 year from the date you renewed it.
So if you have say 3 months left in your passport and you renew 1 year you'll only get 9 months extra.

If you extend the maximum 5 years, the extension period will be added to the date of renewal.
So if you have 3 months left, your new passport will expire in 5 years and 3 months from now.
This is within a reasonable time frame of course, I doubt you can renew one day and then the next day to get 10 years extension. biggrin.gif

If you have visa, I would suggest you contact the embassy or immigration department for more info. You can find them by the internet.

Some visa are tied to passport number (e.g. SG working visa)

So if your passport expired and renewed, you'd get a new passport number, which I believe you should replace your working visa too...

Anyway, above is based on my logic only, best is check with the embassy of respective country regarding the visa...

But if only about passport, no need renew now lah, you rugi the time if you are not travelling anywhere soon....can renew later when you are travelling overseas...new passport complete in few hours only...

Visa are attach to old passport. Even old passport are expired it still valid. You just need bring 2 passport travel together.

Example my US visa valid 10 years. Definitely I need 2 passport already. One is old expired passport with my US visa on it. Another was my new passport.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. So, my conclusion is,
- renewal and creating a new one is the same price, so it's doesn't really matter.
- the process is efficient now, so it'll only take 1 year
- visa's expiry is not tied to the passport but on the visa itself

Well it happened to me when I last renewed my passport in 2012. They added the remaining months to the new passport.

I also didn't know about it until I overheard the officer told the people in the line the difference between 1 year and 5 year renewal.

a. Renew now when you don't need it yet
b. or let the passport expire, and then go renew when you need later.
price is the same, but expiry date will not be. b might be further in the future, or it might be the same as a.
so b might be cheaper or the same as a, but a will never be cheaper
so they are not the same

b's expiry should be further in future.
