I have a pretty old pc, and i can't get a new one. I'm still in school, so basically my dad won't allow it. But he'll let me upgrade it. My motherboard is a KT4AV, by MSI. I checked, and the best processor i can get is an AMD 3000+ xp. Is it worth getting and then overclocking to try and get as much speed as possible from this motherboard?

My video card is FX5200 and i have 1GB kingston ram, so those two should be decent enough.

Thanks for any help.

the idea of overclocking is to squeeeeeze a system to the max
so why not
but, ur mobo is using via chipset, n the pci/agp bus aint locked
so, theres not much of fsb can be increased before the bus goes nuts >__<

That graphic card is considered very low-end but at least it'll let you play games...at the lowest settings. Ram is okay , but with a modern games expect some glitches/lags.

So ...what does that mean? you have a low budget/dad will pay but only for upgrading/

XD i'm a total noob at overclocking, so I don't really know what's involved, which is why i'm here to ask before i destroy my own pc.

My pc was good la...3 years ago. My dad will only let me upgrade it limitedly, so i cannot just go out and buy a few k worth of cpu and vid card. Max is probably 1k for both vid card and processor. Of course, if it's not worth it or impossible to squeeze much more out of this system, then i give up la until i can afford to get my own pc.

Not worth it. with the chipset (KT400) u have, the pci bus will go totally whack (out of spec), causing system instability. If want to OC try searching for NF7/NF7S board with the Nforce2 U400 chipset.. baru chun.

For now maybe just upgrade the video card first

my opinion.. not worth 2 buy a Socket A/462 mobo & AGP gc nowaday..
n ur current mobo cant do well in oc..

so leave it 4 normal use or slightly gaming
start save sum money 2 upgrade pc laugh.gif

Upgrade means how far do u have in budget.
If u are planning to get an Athlon XP 3000+(which is quite hard to find) and to change ur mobo to Nforce2 based mobos to overclock it, i suppose u'd be spending around RM300 or maybe more.
So, why don't u just go for maybe those old S754 A64 for almost the same price. That would be better, but u might need to get some ddr rams if u dun have them.
The GC is still decent for light gaming, but it's just really decent, nothing more than that. Dun expect to play all the latest games even after OC as some games nowadays require technology which the card doesn't have.

You have to expect to spend/upgrade PC's every 3~4 years to keep up.

If you have a thousand ringgit , come up with RM4OO anyway you can and get a XBOX360 - RM13XX or RM14XX

KT4AV in my thought is not a good motherboard for overclocking. You might change the mobo if you affordable.

If you have too many things that you need to change to get better overclocking results, then you might as well get the latest processor and mobo instead because for the money dumped for an old system, it's not worth it unless you can get them all as used hardwares. smile.gif

RM 1k is enough for you to upgrade.

you're still using 1GB RAM - can you find out if it's DDR400? smile.gif if it's DDR400 then it'll be good!!!

cos you can get

Sempron64 2800+ AM2 - RM 155
Biostar board - RM 240

that's RM 400 already.
so RM 600 left.

so let's say you sell your old processor + mobo + graphic card. you'll probably be able to get RM 200 back.

RM 600 + 200 = RM 800.

enough to get 1GB DDR2 and 1x 7300GT

of course - that'll be the ideal IMO.

if not, then just go garage sale. try to get used Socket 754 mobo + processor and even graphic cards. smile.gif

Hmm, ok, thanks guys. I guess this pc is whacked then. I'll start saving up, hopefully, eventually, i can afford a new one in the future.
