Thanks to everyone keeping this thread useful and informative smile.gif
I wanted to check on tax resident and non-resident, I used the calculator and roughly understand how it works. In Malaysia, MTD/PCB is done by Employer on monthly basis in which we receive nett salary in our bank account. So same goes to Expat where they are taxed as Non-resident monthly for first 6 months and receive refund when they perform tax filling. Is it the same in Singapore? I am asking to ensure that I have sufficient income to cover for the first 6 months.

Nope you will not have that witholding tax type in SG
You don't have a monthly deduction. Only pay the entire amount during tax cycle the following year
*
Thanks, u have clarified my question! Does that mean everyone pay tax on yearly basis?

QUOTE(the99percent1 @ Mar 20 2016, 03:18 PM)
You pay a 15% flat rate if work less than 183 days in sg.

However, can request a refund if you stay longer ie long term resident.
*
Yes, understood. I plan to work in SG for long term.

QUOTE(Mackiddo @ Mar 20 2016, 03:44 PM)
or pay by GIRO monthly, interest free smile.gif
*
We can opt to pay tax on monthly basis?

of cos rent whole house without owner or whatsoever, but thats a bit expensive comparatively
*
No, I am looking for a room to rent, not entire unit.. Just wanted to know and compare which one suitable for me.

QUOTE(kyone @ Apr 1 2016, 12:05 AM)
Rent a room with someone taking the whole unit smile.gif

Btw since 1 March 2016, landlords have to register your name under your accommodation - if gov happen to have a spotcheck and you're not staying in the address you provided to MOM, you'll have trouble when renewing/ getting your passes.
*
Why is it better to rent full tenanted one? More freedom? What are the likely curfews?

Most suitable for just about everyone = stay without owner
Cheaper and easier to find = stay with owner

QUOTE(kyone @ Apr 1 2016, 10:17 AM)
Stay in accomm who someone take the whole unit and real with landlord - Pros : you get the freedom, chatting with visiting friends in living room, take your time enjoying cooking and bathing, chin cai cleaning when you don't feel like doing it. Cons - you might be paying more than the market price, the guy deal with landlord just keep secret of the total rent and put a larger portion of rent on the other tenants, you've no idea how he/she deal with the landlord, ending up he's the perfect tenants and you're the troublesome one. House could be messy where things just sporadically settle on floor. Fridge pack with rotten food.

Stay with landlord - usually cleaner tidier and equipments got fixed shortly if spoil. But unfriendly landlords can pry into your life. A friend of mine was told by her landlord "i heard the sound of water directly go onto the floor when you're bathing, can you switch the shower off when you're applying your shampoo?" And they could be control freak, stating the frequency and time for kitchen and washing machine, setting up a lot of fines, or even ask you to babysit their child.

Good luck smile.gif
*
Thanks for your feedback guys! I don't like controlled and curfews environment, so I am gonna opt for those without landlord.. After long working hours, I really need freedom at home/room.
Another question - If I am renting a room - Will it be possible for my friend to stay over when she/he came occasionally? e.g. once in one or two month..

QUOTE(deodorant @ Apr 1 2016, 11:08 AM)
You and your spouse/partner rent entire unit for yourselves, of course.
*
I will be staying by myself, so I am looking for room with good surrounding environment..

Hey, I am freshie. And my first job will be starting at 15th June 2016, and I may taking leave on 22nd and 23rd June which is just one week after I start working ( due to some family praying ritual ). I know it will definitely yielding a bad impression as a newbie dare to take off for 2 days just a week after joining new company. May I ask for any advice ? Since I have to take leave, is it any alternative there, like can I work 2 day earlier as refer to the date I promised ? Please, I really need your advice, and your suggestion is much appreciated as I am going to sign the employment letter soon. Thanks...
*
Best is to inform your direct manager and HR before signing the employment letter. Whether they allow u to take or not, that is really depending on your future manager. I have planned travel/vacation in advance and informed them during the interview, so they are well informed of my availability.

Hi guys, I am looking for a room and currently searching for an area that allow me to easily commute to workplace around Marina Mandarin. Initially wanted to stay nearby workplace (Bugis area) but quite expensive. Green, red and yellow line seems to be my alternative (purple slightly further). Anyone can recommend me a nice area (e.g. Kallang, Aljunied etc) that has good surrounding such as food, convenient stores etc?
Thanks.

Okay thanks. So does that mean I am in trouble?

As far as I am aware, I did nothing wrong. I only make transactions on behalf of my company.
*
That could be one of the reason as mentioned by madmoz. Your profile doesn't match your transaction (Since u mentioned that u performed transaction on behalf of your company). One other reason is that it could be that your balance is low most of the time(As mentioned by u earlier), which they think maintaining ur account cost more money to them, so they try to minimize their account holders. Anyway, all these are assumptions only.

Guys, one year of working experience in Malaysia doesnt count as experience meh?  I went for interview in Singapore on yesterday and the interviewer told me so. Is this true? or they are trying to low ball me?

On the side notes, do you guys think jobstreet is good for hunting entry level job? I have sent over 500 applications and only got 1 interview so far.  I came from accounting and finance background. Any other site recommendation? Thanks first.
*
An opinion from HR perspective, almost yes. One year is including training, annual leaves, public holidays etc, so first half of the year is covering training and learning from others, and second half of the year u start to perform and still learning at technical/functional/product knowledge.

They offer 1.3k sgd as basic, need to work at least 12 hours a day to get OT pay then only have around 1.8k sgd. Dont think I will accept leh.

Just keep trying and don't give up. It really takes long time to get a good offer..

possible, but its like an outsourcing company im not too sure how it works :/
*
Definitely not. 20% in exchange of all benefits, leaves, medical/insurance, recognition of services and lastly most important is job security. Unless, u are earning close to SGD20k/month which equiv. to SGD4k (20%) still not a good decision. IMO, only move if u hate your job and your boss, otherwise not worth from my POV.

Hello everyone! I am new here! *I mean in SG* First week passed and I am still trying my best to adapt to the new environment. Waiting for my E-pass to courier to me so I don't have to carry my passport around, and can get my bank account done and local mobile plan as well..

Yupe. But I will enter Singapore only June. Morever, I may refer to HR for any corporate telco package after I joining company, so I may not getting my Sg no. so soon.
*
Yes, correct. U will need valid EP to get corporate package. For Singtel, u must take combo package with contract period to enjoy corporate package. I just went check few hours ago. Recommend u to take tourist simcard when u arrive, for Singtel 5 days (SGD15), 10 days (SGD30), including the day simcard activated. This are based on my real personal experience and just two weeks ago.

I am not sure about their air force military airport/field location, just wanted to add that they started practicing their National Day now. So many places also can hear the Jet Fighter sound - e.g. CityHall, Eunos, Paya Lebar (I been these places few days ago and can hear it quite frequent.
