this is the lowest salary compared to the past 4 years, my last job paid about 20k if converted to myr(very standard salary in my age group in nz), my goal now is to expand my client base to build it back up to that level and beyond.

I am new zealand permanent resident and worked there for 3 years before moving to KL. One reason I was able to move here was because I managed to secure a long term client over there, and have enough commercial projects under my belt already that getting new clients isn't as hard anymore. Being in this industry, working from overseas is the same process because all communication is done by email anyway, (plus I was already working between cities in NZ). So my salary is in new zealand dollars, which is about 3.05x malaysian ringgit, thats why it seems large for KL standard. Obviously, getting residency in two countries isn't very easy (and esp. in one of the better economies), but that is my major advantage.

I got pr there around 2002 , back then the government still had positive immigration incentives, now its a bit harder. Now they are looking for people with certain skills

Which you can try apply for.  Other ways is to find a girlfriend there with residency already or company to sponsor you, both not easy.
