I believe sometimes it really depends on luck, some people that are really good but not being appreciated will not draw good salaries. I have seen a manager that has no IT knowledge become an IT manager at 26 years old, drawing 10k + 1k allowance. Location at OKR, Web Application SME.
*
yup true.. sometimes it was luck..

my current manager supposed to be technical lead only when he joined in..
suddenly our head of dept, manager and lead put their resign paper.. (2 weeks after he joined in)

during that time there was no one qualified for head roles and by luck he got the position as head for product.. (salary increment as well)

the management was really bad for two years already cause he has 0 experience and bad management skills.. icon_question.gif icon_question.gif icon_question.gif

QUOTE(McF7y @ Jun 8 2017, 08:29 AM)
Hello guys,

I'm not sure if this is the place to discuss this.

Anyone knows the reasoning behind expat salaries and packages being ballooned out of proportion? (No offence to expats reading this).

Some expats in varying industries are earning more than triple or quadruple their local counterparts and subordinates are earning. On top of that, they get allowance, accommodation paid for, if they have kids their tuition fees are paid for...etc.

I've even heard cases where their allowance is so much that they don't even touch their salary - so it all goes into savings.

All this, while their local counterparts and subordinates are earning a fraction of their salaries. And struggling with various types of commitments.

At the end of the day I can understand that it is all about managing your funds vs commitments. Also the expats probably come with tons of experience and motivation.

But are expats really worth the money they are being paid? I mean can't they find a local to do their job?

Lastly, I do not mean for this to turn into rant but I'm just trying to understand the justification for companies paying so much.

I say all this, coming from a semi oil & gas background - I say 'semi' because I am on the vendor side of things and deal with a lot of oil & gas contractors here.

Would like to hear your thoughts.
*
same with my company.. full of IT expats and they are not so professional as what my company believe..

their salary is triple the amount of senior exec here..

but when comes to work.. nothing bro.. empty.. (not all of them some are very skillful and hardworking)

when we raised this issue to our CTO.. he simply said we need their knowledge and expertise they can do work fast no need for training cost..

Triple? Man, that must be quite demotivating to the senior execs. It would demotivate me for sure.

Did you counter back to your CTO that you can do the same work just as fast and that you are just as experienced? Wonder what he would've said.

I tried googling this and did find some articles but most of them were related to the salaries of expats in Humanitarian Aide/NGO organisations and how big the gap is compared to locals in specific countries where the NGO is assisting.

Not much on this topic in other industries. There was one generic article saying that one of the justifications was the 'hardships' of living abroad, 'inconveniences' and 'exchange rate' of said expat and their home country as factors for the gap in salary. I kinda chuckled because well maybe back in the 60s or 70s you could use that argument. But these days I think 'hardship' would be better replaced by 'perks' and 'benefits' of working abroad.

Also, from a broader perspective, wouldn't it be better if they evened out the salary gap? By that I mean probably reducing the wages of expats while increasing the wage of the locals. But again, I'm not a business owner so I am not talking from experience.

Any employers/upper management/owner of businesses care to comment? I'm asking because, sincerely, I want to know why - please don't take this as an attack on expats or failure of upper-management in managing employees.
*
Yup.. like seriously demotivating.. i'll give u example..

senior salary : 6K++
expats salary : 18K++

my company taking expats from some company which provide IT people.
the expats company will take around 50 - 60% of their offered salary.

which will give them around RM7k - RM9k..

As for my opinion.. they can get 2 or 3 people from our local with the offered salary and still able to get the job done..

CTO also like hidding something never answer directly.. really want to know the reason.. unsure.gif

Not sure la cause my head also expat 8 years working here.. doh.gif

Man that's nuts. Is your company also subsidising their accommodation, kids education, car etc? If so, that's like double-whammy. Here we are having to pay for all on a salary that's a fraction of theirs. But if it's the culture, then I guess it's just something we have to accept.

Honestly, I am all for expats working here, really I have nothing against them. In fact there is a lot we can gain from them in terms of their skills, work-ethic, time-management etc. But if we see them doing what we do for a wage much higher than ours then definitely questions will be asked.
*
no man.. no accomodation.. only head can get car from company..

I think I can argue about work-ethic and time-management.. not all of them is good..
but I think mayb they should try to end contract for those that have issue with work-ethic and time-management.
but they still keep them here.. not sure why oso.. hahahaha

RM18k is nothing for an expat.
In my department, got 4 expat,  and the lowest rank is drawing rm50+k/month,  and its post tax.
When we local candidates ask for salary adjustment, management and hr will give tonnes of reason to avoid it.
If you ask me if they are good, I would say it depends, 2 of them are experience and hardworking,  hence, I have to say I have leant something from them. But the other 2 is just here for show, not only they cannot contribute,  yet they like to stirred up all the tiny issues and backfiring.

Thanks man, but at 32 this year still got lots to achieve and goals to pursue.
Actually as a plant manager , the role is related to operations hence the technical aspects is not a challenge.

What made me successful in switching to the current MNC, which has a head count of 4000 plus staff was mainly my leadership skills and proving that I am a high achiever. I had to compete even with candidates that had a PHD with 20 years experience.

Be pragmatic and accurately represent your self I shall say, start mastering leadership skills and attributes as that will bringing you further up the ladder. The X factor of having a good personality and ability to engage with stakeholders/share holders across all vertical does come in handy.

32 and already reach 14k salary..
while i am still targetting 5k before 30..
really should adjust my target cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif

My portfolio website is http://www.yks.co.nz/ from a few years ago, these days I just rely on my reputation to get new projects. The bulk of my work is based in NZ, but it includes survey/mapping apps & websites.
I am expanding into mapping using drones for the next 24 months.
My main technology stack is mostly AWS lambda, dynamoDB, etc, and xcode (moving into xamarin or equivalent), and your typical html/js for web. The drone tech and computer vision is in C and C# etc

Specifically which IT specialization? hardware/software/system/network etc
The pay can differ much depending on specialization and responsibilities.

Generally 4k with 3 years experience considered slightly above average I think.
