Just my 2 cents. Forgive me if it sounds rough, but I'm more of a straight forward person.

1. Education. You're majoring in electrical engineering, so i assume your focus is on your major itself. In other words, I can't understand why you obtained a CNC machining certificate. If I were you, I would polish up my C+ language or learn a new programming language altogether. Being jack of all trades doesnt make you progress further as far as your career is concerned.

2. Current job. You've entered your company at a non-executive level. I'm almost positive by the time you got your degree, you can easily engage in an executive level position at another company. In other words, pay rise and opportunities for career advancement would be unlocked.

3. Achievements. If I were you, I wouldn't talk about my achievements back at high school because it don't bring any impact to your professional career.

4. Think what the employer wants. They want brain, certificates and solid-proof. That being said, get some valuable external certifications to help distinguish yourself. CNC machining is definitely not one of them. You can consider professional engineer after you obtain your degree + 3 years of extra working experience.

5. Starting your own business. I'm not sure if this expertise is sough-after in Malaysia, but there's a pioneer in everything. If you're good at it and you want to try it, all the best! smile.gif

Extra: I've realized your brother got 20+ certs from company within a very short time frame. that's really impressive but I highly doubt the value of the certificates as each certificate took him about 1+ month (on average) to obtain.

My opinion: try to negotiate for higher salary with your employer AFTER you got your degree. otherwise, consider starting your own business as mentioned earlier. you're really young and therefore, you can try to look into other industries as well. No point in restricting yourself (:
*
1. CNC machining cert was sponsored by my univ (UTM) during my studies & also my ASP.net C# cert was also sponsored too. these two certs was opened for Mechanical Eng. student & Software student. BUT, there was some open space due to most of these students didn`t want to go for the course since it was offered during semester break (majority goes back hometown). I on the other hand took that opportunity (it wasn`t offered to electrical eng. student to begin with)

2. Yes i did enter non-exec (diploma level) . I will finish my studies mid of this year. In terms of my working scope, no different from current engineers here. I learn alot here (till the point I could build all by myself, since i was the pioneer team member of all UAV projects)

3. I`m just mentioning my achievements during my school & Univ. It does give a picture of the type of person I am.

4. I think they do realise what I`m capable. Professional Engineer is on my list to do things & I might continue pursuing masters. I`m still looking for valuable certs that could benefit me. If you do have any info, mind sharing it.

5. Yes UAV is kinda new here in malaysia, I`m also the pioneer of the project at this current company.

as of this moment, i`m considering to venture into programming (ask the owner of the company to transfer me to software development department). I`ve completed successfully a few C# base projects in integration for the UAV. (I did the software as a means of learning, and it ended up permanent in the whole system tongue.gif )

Currently i`m just about to toy around with SDK for android. (build my own android apps hopefully). who knows a few tries might hit a jackpot thumbsup.gif

all in all, I really enjoy working at this current company (5 years already). BUT the only thing that`s getting to me is the pay. Please advise.

Suggest you to jump. Your company does not values you.  shocking.gif

the company i work for, the pay is not much, but the benefits for my situation is good
1. the avg increment is 50-150 per year for staff.i work well (200-300) around now. so my increment is considered high (maybe for diploma level)
2. my degree studies are payed fully by my company (30k)
3. study and exam leave
4. r&d company, alot of high tech stuff i could toy around with. kinda cool
5. 8 hours working per day and that's it, i get home on time. ( i think this is not common thing in private companies, and i don't know why)

all in all, i really like working here. My concerns as of now is
1. the pay kinda sucks so i've been told
2. i have reached a point where I feel that I don't grow much, compared to when I first joined the company

I believe your degree + 5 years of experience can easily earn you double that salary if you are to jump ship.
*
i'm aware of that.
how do i begin to negotiate salary? i have no idea. any suggestions?

QUOTE(mytaffeta @ Jul 19 2016, 03:26 AM)
that is most ppl problem, too comfort with company but getting less salary.. jump ship, see if they counter..
*
yeah, i'm comfortable with the job, but not the pay in the long run. i do have hopes and dreams to achieve at certain years. but current pay doesn't allow it. so for the time being trying to generate some other income source.

QUOTE(daMuoYooHooB @ Jul 19 2016, 06:46 AM)
with the company paying for your studies, im surprised you're not bonded to them at least for a couple of years.

if you like working there, (work-life balance seems decent) negotiate to get a better salary.
*
how do i negotiate better pay.... please help me.

QUOTE(ZZMsia @ Jul 19 2016, 08:11 AM)
Bad work life balance in Malaysia- horrible hours..

suggest you to get another offer n see if they counter.

his is alright. 8 working hours is pretty standard throughout the developed world. this is not scandinavia lol.

QUOTE(ZZMsia @ Jul 19 2016, 08:59 AM)
I was speaking in reference to other companies..His is GOOD

Tis is wat we call comfort zone

Need to make changes to get higher salary

But if salary is least ur concern, ur company is quite good in terms of work life balance
*
most staff here who stay more than 10 years regard the work life balance as priority

Not really. A lot of MNC also practice the same. They didnt give very high increment unless the staff made a move from technician to engineer level.
I was in a foreign bank, the yearly increment quite slow, but they did provide a lot of employee career growth benefits etc. Promotion is based on seniority, performance, certification, which is review annually. From clerk promote to officer, the salary jump could be a few thousands.
Comfort zone or not is depends on how you think. Royalty give extra marks for people when comes to candidate selection. Some small enterprise willing to pay higher than the market rate, but they never take staff career growth into their business plan. Some people said that staffs from MNC are better in english communication. And I have seen a lot of MNC stipulated that they prefer MNC background whenever there any new intake.
Just my 2 cents.

my english is good, i was raised in UK for 5 years. kinda learned english 1st before any other language
