Same thing happened to my 1st console.....it'll just freeze all of a sudden with lines on the screen and with a loud screeching sound as a bonus.....after a while, came the dreaded 3RODs...... But that wasn't due to any update at all, it just decided to do it. So maybe it could be just a coincidence that it happened after you updated. I'd suggest just go and repair it, as it's more to a hardware problem than a software one IMO.
