all this talk of next gen gaming has gotten me curious.

how do we tell apart each console's generation?

we cant go by graphics,as shown by Wii
we cant go by controls,as the Wii and the other two consoles have very different controls, yet are of the same generation.

so how do we tell each generation apart? unsure.gif

just for reference:
QUOTE
First generation
Magnavox Odyssey . Pong . Coleco Telstar
Early second generation
Channel F . Atari 2600 . Odyssey² . Intellivision
Later second generation
Atari 5200 . ColecoVision . Vectrex . SG-1000
Third generation
NES . Master System . Atari 7800
Fourth generation
TurboGrafx-16 . Mega Drive/Genesis . Neo Geo . SNES
Fifth generation
3DO . Jaguar . Saturn . PlayStation . N64
Sixth generation
Dreamcast . PlayStation 2 . GameCube . Xbox
Seventh generation
Xbox 360 . PlayStation 3 . Wii

good one, but i think u'd probably list it properly already. Now, my personal opinion to your question is that the media which they use defines the next generation. hence, like ps3 to bluray, xbox360 - dvd/hd-dvd, wii - let say its the wii-remote (they did state that they're not trying to get into a media usage war, they're more on to innovative-ness)

maybe thats just my opinion. anyone has a better idea? biggrin.gif

the list is correct(according to wikipedia) but lets say we dont have the internet,or that list.
how would we know what the 1st generation was,or what the 5th generation was?(which console)

hah! like i said, nintendo wants to stay clear of the media usage. they always do. look at gamecube...somehow or rather, its different. lets put it this way. would u say psp in 3 years time, comes psp2, would u call it a next-generation? if not...then why not?

its like that. there's always an improvement. thats when the word "next" comes to play.

by the way, u got me there about the n64 thing...it was so crappy, i almost forgot about it. hahahaha biggrin.gif

I think it's based either by graphic and processing powers of the console or by the revolution it brings to the game industry as a whole.
