Dell with 4K screen and Nvidia 960M 4GB under RM 5,000? Am I missing something? Wow, everyone is rushing into the "gaming laptop" scene, must be all the recent excitement surrounding the exploding e-sports scene.

With touchscreen as well whistling.gif

Mind. Blown. Edit: The RM4,500 is probably the non-touch 1080p screen. Touch with 4K for RM4,500 sounds... insane. EDIT2: IT'S THE UHD 4K ONE! shocking.gif

Nice one! Why they dont use DDR4 on 7559???

The only point holding me.

AFAIK DDR3 is lower voltage and cheaper, and from what I see from the benchmarks DDR4 even when insanely overclocked rarely improves performance for Intel-Nvidia setups.

16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD along with at least Nvidia 960M 4GB are they key areas IMO.

still pending info. from Dell Malaysia on the 4k Touch display, need to make sure what panel it is before purchase.
*
It appears to be confirmed as on: http://www.dell.com/my/p/inspiron-15-7559-...timonster=PD_OC

That is, if one were to purchase online it clearly shows the 4K display as included in the price and not optional.

Wow. I hope it's a decent screen. No reviews out yet.

It looks like Lenovo Y700 (I saw it in MidValley KL today) and Dell 7000 are arriving in Malaysia somewhat earlier than the rest of the world?

The Y700 has a nicer design but if the Dell 4K display is good, it's hard to beat that kind of value. You wouldn't be able to game at that resolution though with an Nvidia 960M. But it would be very convenient for graphic design, 3D rendering, etc.

That's the catch: for the latest games you would have to run the screen at 2K resolution for decent quality and framerates.

As impressive as it is I'm leaning back towards the Lenovo Y700. If I need 2K or 4K then that's probably best on a 24" to 27" screen. The current 15" MacBook Pro Retina is 4K but at 15 inches 4K doesn't quite make sense unless you really love the "retina style".

The Y700 also has a 128GB SSD right off the bat so just put Windows 10 on that and your most important apps, everything else put it on the 1TB HD: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideap...s/y700-15-inch/

I really have to say Praise God for e-sports, they have forced/ encouraged the major laptop manufacturers to bring gaming laptop prices down from the stratosphere.

It's a nice price but IMHO 4k is turning me off, due to battery draining faster. Wish Dell would come out with a version for FullHD + i7 processor though

Yup Lenovo Y700 is looking good, I'm trying to check the local pricing.

Okie dokie my bad... http://www.tomshardware.com/news/skylake-m...port,30185.html

I still feel DDR3L vs DDR4 on Skylake won't make a huge difference but it sure would feel better, "emotionally", with DDR4.

QUOTE(XeactorZ @ Oct 26 2015, 10:26 PM)
if gaming just set the resolution to full hd lor
Which would be kind of weird since you're not playing at native pixels and indeed 4K on 15" is a little crazy.

Edit: Nice, Lenovo Y700 is DDR4... And if I'm not mistaken at MidValley the model listed for under RM 5,000 is 16GB RAM, Nvidia 960M 4GB and 128GB SSD + 1TB HD. General spec sheet here: http://news.lenovo.com/images/20034/ideapa...pec%20Sheet.pdf

I guess it'll be best to wait for the Lenovo MY online store to be updated to see the official model details and pricing.

IMO is quite crazy on 15.6" screen laugh.gif
as for lenovo y700, don't put so much hope on it
since right now due to weak currency, most of the product (example laptop) price is higher cry.gif

Yeah it's all over the place at the moment. To be honest I'm looking to sell my MacBook Pro Retina 15" (mid-2014) and then switch over to an Nvidia 960M 4GB.

For design and smoothness of OSX Apple is still very nice but I would like some nice 3D horsepower for 2016 mainly for Nvidia IRay GPU rendering. A "gaming" laptop is just nice because I would like the portability and I don't need too fancy a card, just a decent Maxwell with 4GB VRAM.

But while the currency is crazy, RM may recover somewhat, and with the new rush to sell gaming laptops prices can come down or manufacturers may keep prices and stuff more features in (like 256GB SSD smile.gif). Maybe around the RM 5,000 mark end of this year or early next year we might see some nice models with 970M 4GB.

So, Lord willing:
Nice Skylake i7
16GB DDR4
256GB SSD + 1TB HD
Nvidia 970M 4GB
1080p (fine for 15" if the colours etc are good... A 2K 24" or so external monitor will be just nice if I need to work in "desktop mode")
RM 5,000 or less

Cheers all and good night.

Pretty much not much difference. Like you said just for "emotional" thing.

Yup, my emotions like the DDR4 though... OK update: I checked with the Lenovo shop in MidValley again, they have the Y50/Y70 on display, not the new Y700. The shop manager/etc. mentioned it would arrive end of November, if I heard correctly.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JVNMmsN3Co

WARNING: Thin laptops can have thermal throttling...This apparently affects the Lenovo Y50/70 because of its thinness. I haven't been able to confirm. I ~can~ confirm this occurs with MacBook Pro Retina 15" mid-2014. Turbo boost throttles from 3.2ghz for four cores down to 2.7ghz or lower under full load (and CPU temp is almost 100degC)... Even if you "force"/overclock 3.2ghz in such a situation CPU temperature even with full fans will shoot past 100degC and it will throttle/shut down anyway to prevent frying the CPU.

In comparison, Asus G55 can handle 3.2ghz at 90degC under full load, no throttling. The latest Alienware 15" I checked out today is quite bulky IMO so I assume it can handle overclocking (and it has a 980M anyway so I'm sure it has some pretty beefy CPU and GPU cooling).

Please advise if you have experienced any gaming laptop with thermal throttling where it cannot maintain the rated turbo boost speed at 4 cores under full load. Check out http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/mot...ng-utility.html ...You can also overclock through bus clock (DISCLAIMER: YOU MAY VOID YOUR WARRANTY, DAMAGE YOUR LAPTOP ETC).

FWIW Asus G55 3630QM... I can overclock the CPU 3.2ghz to 3.3ghz, run it full load for hours (without GPU overclock of course)... But I usually don't because I overclock the GPU instead and leave the CPU and bus speed as is.
