Well LCD got their pros and cons. Not gonna talk about prices, LCD is getting cheaper.
Pros:
1. You can get to immense size but not take up one big area on the table (CRTs do, due to their electron guns)
2. Yeah, no flickers at all, it's liquid, not electrons.
3. Flat screen, light, and the display takes all the available spot on the screen (aka no black borders, for perfectionists

)
4. No flickers, basically Hz doesn't really matter, most of em are fine on 60 Hz.
Cons:
1. Well, one con, and that is your display gets blurry, due to the time taken to shift the image. Although they say they say 8 ms reaction time, CRT got 0 ms reaction time

(try move your mouse around, use 2 monitors, see which one got blur which one doesn't, of course, compare using crt and lcd).
I must say the con doesn't really matter, it won't hurt (at all) your uber reaction time on first person shooters.
Well, I can say that Dell leads the LCD market, their monitors had been fine, even the reviews are good, with all the features you wanted such as aspect ratio scaling by putting black borders so that you don't get stretched images, good for games.
My bro is using samsung, it works well too.
