Its a trading card game. If not mistaken, there is an online version as well. Like Yu-Gi-Oh card game. Online version similar with Hearthstone.

Yeah I know. I'm just saying how it's a Pay-To-Win game, with the hope of not offending any Magic players.

Use to play o alot. but have to stop since no budget. Im standard player

Yeah, the community so small in Asia, to the point of the P2W aspect is really tough.

Cards cost more expensive here compared to US

Used to play frequently too, until the people who pay-to-win come along.
What do I mean by pay-to-win?
Two interconnected ways (one needs the other to win and one cannot win alone..not all the time):
1) MTG shop that does trading
2) regular players like you and me.

MTG shops will open boxes, collect rare cards, trade for rares and etc. These shops usually buy low and sell high base on latest InQuest/Scrye prices (then, now these publications ceased to exists already in 2007 and 2009.) The shops will build Tier 1 decks base entirely on championship winning decks which can be found online.

The MTG shops has their regular players and the shop will sponsor these decks to players to compete in FNMs and tournaments (not necessarily official organised) and the players gets recorded in the ranks and ratings when they win. The prizes are tend handed back to the shop instead. If you ask these players to bring their own decks, usually they have close to nothing but they rank high in ratings.

Then there are pre-release tournaments, these players will then be "sponsored" by these MTG shops and at the end of the pre-release event, all cards and prizes are returned to the MTG shops including the special pre-release card. The shop owners usually hang around until event is over to collect the cards and send his players back.

Wow.. I didn't know that. I had only started playing earlier this year. I felt that in order to keep up, you'll have to fork out a lot of money just to stay in the game. Lets not even talk about winning lol.

How did you know all these?

Yes, as an individual, you have to put forth a lot of money to build a Tier 2-3 deck. You can forget about championship decks.

If you're a casual player, better to scout around for a place/shop that you think is ok then stick around. Main idea is to have fun and playing with friends on a weekend afternoon. When you have neither one, you know it's time to exit.

I'm a player since Fallen Empires to Mirrodin time, back then the playing field is more casual. From Invasion onwards is more of a show off and who has the better rares in their deck. Forget about going to basics of each card to build a winning deck, fast track copy paste from online decks.

What's the point of playing a competitive game where the victor is determined not by the sheer amount of your skills, but rather with your real life resources?

In some places, that kid of culture still exists. I heard that in Singapore and Australia, they usually leave the money factor out of the game. Whenever, you want a card, they will ask for a similar one in value to trade instead. Kind of like the old system.

But unfortunately, as much as I hate it, what you say might be true. Most places in Malaysia has become who has the most money to get the best cards.

Play Dead of Winter better.

Exactly! Try putting a monetary value to the championship deck and see how much it costs. Last time in standards, an Astral Slide deck with side boards costs RM 1.2k - 1.5k. But the player who had that deck commented it doesn't costs that much, you people are crazy, only RM500 can build; from a kid who hasn't past his PMR yet.

My group took out RM 500 on the spot, ask him to sell it now. He labelled us crazy again and immediately packed up his deck and cards and run. Some weeks later, we saw the same kid in another MTG shop and we saw him asking the shop owner to lend him the Astral Slide deck to compete in that shop.

Oh lol! So in other words, the shops are getting people to play on the shop's behalf. I'm not sure if this is still happening now but I did played with someone with a borrowed deck from the shop.

Just wondering right, does anyone here knows where do I sell my old magic the gathering cards? Cause I want to get the maximum value out of them. These are some of the cards. Thanks in advance!
