Been looking at some HDTV and narrowed it down to the Samsung 40R71BX or the Philips 42PF7421. Can't afford the ones with 1080p out of my budget.

Was doing some comparison and found the following between the 2

1). In terms of input the Samsung has 1 HDMI and 2 components whereas the Philips has 2 HDMI and 1 component, both have VGA Connection. Not sure which is more beneficial. The idea is to have my Xbox360 upcoming Wii and PS3 to be connected.

2.) The Philips includes the bracket to hang on the wall and the Samsung is an additional cost. For those hanging on the wall do you have a problem putting the necessary peripherals once it hung on the wall?

3) The Samsung seems very bright and rich but blurry at times in terms of details compared to the Philips (is my eyes playing tricks). I asked the man to set the same brightness, contrast and sharpness to do a comparison and the Philips does seem more vibrant then but is that a fair comparsion?

4.) Samsung is 1:5000 contrast and Philips is 1:2000 contrast. Makes a difference?

5.) Asthetics wise Samsung wins hands down in sleekness and has the option to turn on game mode? Does this really make a difference.?

Price wise almost the same but Philips is giving the bracket and has an option of 4 year warranty, Samsung only 1 year warranty. That 4 year warranty worth it cause I can a lower price with a 1 year warranty for the Philips.

Leaning towards the Philips but the Samsung does look nice but no idea if the game mode in Samsung will make a difference. Both at 8ms.

Thanks for any advice biggrin.gif

Seems the game mode set for the Samsung makes it worst after sifting through the AVforums. Thanks for the input btw thumbup.gif

What, game mode make it worst ? I think i have read somewhere that game mode will reduce the lag.
And from what i understand game mode will off the scaling, so it will follow the resolution of the input, say if a game is played in 720p widescreen, then the resolution will be 1280x720. I think like that. Correct me if i'm wrong  blush.gif

From the AVS Forums those who purchase the R71 some of them have been complaining that with game mode, its looks darker and much better to play without the game mode.

I am inclining towards the Philips at this point as it seems richer in depth and doesn't look washout compared to the Samsung. I do wish it looks as sleek as the Samsung though.

Looking to buy the new LCD TV on next January too to replace my old sony bravia...but saving it for the one that can support 1080p ... anyone knows any other brands beside Sony Bravia X as an option for pricing factors....

Philips has a new one out that support 1080p cant remember the exact model and it was on display at Harvey's Norman going for 16k and was more or less or side by side with the Bravia X and impressed me more.

Heres' the issue:

True enough, not many people will really care about this but it sure is a weird thing to happen. Nowadays the most common HDTV resolution employed is 720p, or 1280×720 pixels progressively rendered, but there used to be a time where the standards weren't so set in stone. PS3 owners with an HDTV from that era might end up with some strange resolutions.

As it turns out, when the Playstation 3 detects that an output source does not support 720p, it will scale back to 480p output instead, even if the television does support the far more desirable 1080i, or 1920×1080 interlaced, output format to which it could easily upscale. IGN performed some tests and found that this indeed happens:

We tested this development on older HDTV sets with games designed for 720p but not 1080i - Resistance: Fall of Man, NHL 2K7, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07, and Need for Speed Carbon. Sure enough, the system downshifted all four titles to 480p rather than moving up to 1080i. This issue came up with either a digital HD video connection (using an HDMI cord) and an analog HD video connection (using component cables.)

Source: Playstatic

So in otherwards if you pick the new ones you should be okay with 1080i. I don't have the budget for 1080p, well I could but I think it suffice for me. Going to make my purchase on the Philips tomorrow smile.gif
