Hey guys. I'm building my first ever gaming PC. I'd like your opinion on the components I've chosen after a whole day of research.

CPU | Intel Core i5-4690K
CPU Cooler | Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
Motherboard | Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI ATX LGA1150
Memory | Kingston HyperX Fury 4GBx2
Storage | Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM
Video Card | Palit/Gainward/Zotac Nvidia GTX 970 (Can't really decide yet)
Case | Corsair 200R ATX
PSU | COOLER MASTER V550 / Super Flower Leadex Silver 650W / THERMALTAKE TOUGHPOWER 650W (can't decide)

I don't plan on going any higher than 1080p/60fps but still want max details so please comment and give suggestions especially if there are better and cheaper alternatives.

I haven't really set a budget yet. I'd like to see where this goes and cut down from there if it seems overkill.

Thanks.

You picked last gen CPU which is almost similar cost as current gen CPU, any reason? Or you've forgotten Skylake  laugh.gif
*
I did consider the 6600k but then I'd need a 1151 motherboard. Does a 1151 mobo fully support DDR3 RAM? Will there be any drawbacks to the other hardware I've chosen by getting a 1151 mobo?

I have almost zero knowledge about building a gaming PC until the last past 12 hours or so of googling on building a gaming PC. So please advise..

Have you like bought the MoBo for Haswell or something?  blink.gif  Some Skylake MoBos support DDR3, but it's a risk running DDR3 RAM on Skylake.. sweat.gif Something about the RAM might catch on fire.

IMO, overclocking the CPU doesn't really improve CPU performance that much. What's your budget for the rig?
*
Nope. I haven't bought anything yet. I read that Intel warned about using DDR3 with Skylake can damage the processor. Skylake only officially supports DDR3L. I'd go DDR4 but still too expensive.

Not sure your "too expensive" range is how much, if upgrade to Skylake based on your current selection, it would be,

Intel Core i5 4690K (RM 1059) vs Intel Core i5 6600K (RM 1059)
Gigabyte Z97X-SLI (RM 595) vs Gigabyte Z170XP-SLI (RM 709)
Kingston HyperX Fury 8GB DDR3 1600MHz (RM 220) vs Kingston HyperX Fury 8GB DDR4 2400MHz (RM 289)

CPU same price, mobo + RAM need top up RM 183.

RM 183 is totally acceptable for me since I'll get latest technology, platform and the improvements by going Skylake.
*
For real?! I'm getting the wrong price reference then. 😛

Fine. Skylake it is then. Now a question of i5 or i7. i7 may not be very beneficial for gaming but I'm also interested in going 60fps watching movies. Will i7 be worth it?

If you have extra funds, i7 is worth to get, more games are using the extra threads of i7 now, an example would be Fallout 4, it uses multithreading of i7 pretty well.

Watching 60 FPS movie doesn't require i7 btw, i3 is possible already unless I misinterpret your statement  smile.gif

I see. I'd like to try smooth video project for Watching movies is what i meant. Any recommendations on which i7 you can recommend?

There is only one i7 variant which is i7 6700.
*
Missed a word there. I meant what MoBo would you recommend. SLi capable would be nice or do you think a single GPU setup is good enough.

ASRock Z170 Extreme 4, around RM 800, single GPU setup is quite good already for 1080p 60FPS gaming (assuming you go for GTX970/R9 390 or higher), SLI requires a capable PSU and not to mention not all games are able to run at SLI mode due to lack of SLI support.

First one around 4.5k, second one around 5.1k (I assume the i7 is 6700K, if you aren't going for it, no need to pick the Z170 mobo, go for B150/H170 instead).

If purely gaming, no need to go for oc build, not much performance improvements over non-oc build, you can save up to RM 500 by going non-oc build.

PSU can also switch to Seasonic M12II EVO 520W/620W to save cost.

If the case is fixed, meaning you really want it badly, then you have to prepare more funds for it, if not then you can just get cheaper case to save cost.

Cool. Thanks a lot for your help.

I can't afford to buy everything in one shot. Need to buy the parts monthly around 1.5k/month. or should i just wait till i have enough money and buy everything?

Any suggestions on when is the best time to buy PC parts? Wait for year end or beginning of next year?

This is what I've decided so far:

Intel Core i7 6700k
Cryorig H7
Gigabyte Z170XP-SLI
EVGA GTX970 FTW+ ACX2.0 / Gigabyte GTX970 G1 Gaming
Seasonic M12II-520 EVO

Need suggestions for the cheapest SSD and 2x4GB DDR4 RAM.

Also still can't decide which of the two graphics card I should go for.

It seems like you are buying from Idealtech, they only carry Plextor and Samsung SSD, last time got Liteon but not sure now still have or not, if still got, then Liteon S900 128GB/256GB is one of the best choices.

As for RAM, go for 1x8GB instead if possible, but I know Idealtech is selling 2x4GB instead of 1x8GB (if I am correct), either the value RAM (2133MHz, RM 249) or RipjawsV (2400MHz, RM 329) will do.

Both of the GPU you've listed are very expensive, nearly 1.9k for GTX970, well it doesn't look worth to me at all, top up another 300 and you can get GTX980 (Palit), some other shops are selling GTX980 below 2k and AMD equivalent card (R9 390 with 8GB VRAM) at 1.6k mark only, 1.9k can get you a R9 390X which is even better than GTX980.

Well your choice  wink.gif
*
Now you make me want to get a 980. Back to Googling.

Need monitor recommendation.

24" 1080p IPS panel preferably with hdmi port. Speaker doesn't matter.

In consideration:
Viewsonic VX2370SMH
Acer 24ghyl
AOC I2476VWM

24 hours computing but what software is involved?
I will pick U2414H, that thin bezel and color quality really attract my eye ball.
*
I'm really considering the U2414H but the others are almost half the price. Is it really worth it? Can't find any reviews online comparing any of these monitors.

Can recommend the cheapest 120GB & 240GB SSD and 8GB DDR4 RAM I can get?

So far I found:

Kingston RAM: 2x4GB - RM230 / 1x8GB - RM206
SSD: 120GB Samsung EVO RM300

I'd like to avoid the Kingston V300 as I read poor reviews about it's only slightly higher speed than HDDs.

Earlier I wanted to get the 6700k and sli-capable motherboard just to keep my options open so I can OC and SLi in the future. Considering this is my first ever PC, I doubt I'll ever do it in the near future.

So, what is the most budget-friendly rig I can make?

GPU: NVIDIA GTX 970 (bought)

CPU: i7 6700
PSU: SeaSonic
RAM: 8GB DDR4
Motherboard?
Case?
SSD?

Err, not so clear. Do you mean you still want to maintain 6700K or go for the cheaper 6700 (non-K)?
*
Non-K. I won't be doing OC any time soon and doubt that I ever will. Rather invest on the U2414H instead.

Now just need to decide on what motherboard to get. H170 or Z170. No need to be sli-capable. I think I'll just upgrade to a new GPU when the time comes instead of going SLI.

Please recommend the cheapest DDR4 H170 and Z170 motherboards I can get. Really wanna complete the build by next week.
