hi,

i did some homework myself but im totally new in building a pc so i need some help.

background. i have leftover msi gtx 660, corsair vx450w, ssd 256gb, monitor 1x, pc tower 1x.

i would like to complete a pctower with 2-3k. so the elephant in the room is, skylake or not? skylake processors come with similar power/price as their predecessor however their compatible motherboard cost more because of compatibility to ddr4.

comparing price on jayacom's pricelist, with low 2ks i can hit 4790 or 6600. nearing 3k i can get 6700. is it true?

i will be expecting to buy a cpu, motherboard (z97 or z170), 8gb ram (ddr3/4), perhaps a 500gb hdd. can someone come up with suggested build?

edit: i should include the purpose of this pc. nothing intensive, i just want a troublefree experience using computer. i'm too busy/old for trendy games already.

hi, i have several offers from different merchant these few days so i would like to ask for opinion on which one looks to be the best value, or i should keep looking.
im looking for cpu + mobo + ram + optional cpu cooler (as from my previous post, other parts are recycling old build since graphic is not my main concern). other than some casual games that are not worth mentioning, i figured i want an acceptable experience editing 4k gopro footage as my current i7 quad core laptop is awful at doing it. its just some hiking/ski videos but they take forever to load on my laptop. owh also, i wish to stream on twitch some time in the future so hopefully my pc can handle that too.

Which i7 your laptop is currently using? If it is a HQ version and not U version then I think you better go i7 also for desktop, because HQ version is 4 cores 8 threads CPU, the i5 I recommended is 4 cores 4 threads only, even though the desktop Skylake i5 might be slightly powerful than the i7 you have in your laptop due to higher frequency and newer technology, but still lack of hyperthreading.

not U version. it was ivy bridge i7-3520, supposingly one of the better laptop cpu when it came out 3-4 years ago. so should i go canyon or skylake?
