Hi All,

I'm looking to upgrade my current old rig.

Intel Core i7 860 @ 2.80GHz
MSI P55-GD65 (MS-7583)
2 x 2.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz (9-9-9-24)
1024MB ATI AMD Radeon HD 5770 Series (ASUStek Computer Inc)
SAMSUNG HD103SJ (SATA)
SilverStone Strider Essential 500W

Which one do you guys recommend to upgrade?
Basically, I'm looking possibility of adding SSD (bottleneck by MB?) & maybe increase my DDR3 RAM ?
Or any best bang of buck GPU?

Any recommendation is welcomed! Thanks in advance!

Max is SATA 2 speed (300MB/s) but you will still notice the huge speed improvement if compared to HDD even with the cheapest SSD in the market.

Actually which part of the system that makes you want to upgrade? Poor gaming performance? Or system is slow?

And do you have a specific budget for this upgrade?

Hi, thanks for the quick feedback.

Hmm.. Yeah, I am thinking whether worthy to give the old rig some best bang of buck upgrade at the same time, don't want to invest too much as it might be more worthy to get a whole new rig in total laugh.gif

Sometimes do hit the error (system running low of memory) when open too many tabs in Chrome.
I might do some light gaming...like Fallout 4..

Below 1k maybe?

Chrome is a memory hog, 4GB isn't enough already for 2015, 8GB is the new minimum.

Fallout 4 minimum requirements for the GPU is a HD7870 and your GPU is way too far from achieving the minimum requirements, with 1k budget I will suggest you to get another 4/8GB RAM + GTX960 first, SSD can be added later as SSD will only speed up the PC boot time, app opening time etc.

8GB Value RAM - RM 200
Cheapest GTX960 - RM 799

I see.
Appreciate your detailed explanation! notworthy.gif
I scroll back few pages to get some recommendations

RAM
Kingston HyperX Fury 8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM - RM 220
Kingston HyperX Fury 8GB DDR4 2400MHz RAM - RM 289

Can my rig support both of them? My MB have 4 memory slots and i used 2 of them already.
I still can get 1 can slot it in right? unsure.gif

GPU
Gainward GTX960 2GB GDDR5 Reference - RM 799
Leadtek GTX750 2GB GDDR5 OC - RM 485

Is there any other model that you would recommend please?

Finally, do I need to upgrade my PSU to support both of this upgrade?

DDR4 is only usable on Skylake (6th gen) and Haswell-E (4th gen i7 Extreme series).

Yours is DDR3 but since your current RAM is 1333MHz, so if you get 1600MHz, it will be downclocked to 1333MHz to match the speed of the slowest RAM, this is still fine because performance gap between them is small and you won't notice much difference in real life usage. Or if you want to run at 1600MHz, you can completely remove your old RAM and use the new RAM only, 8GB is enough for now.

Your PSU is 500W, no issue supporting GTX960. The same tier AMD GPU which is R9 380 is priced slightly higher than GTX960 and it draws more power than GTX960, your PSU is still able to power it but I'll suggest you to stick with GTX960 for the time being to save cost and Fallout 4 is another nvidia gameworks title, meaning nvidia GPU will have slight advantage over AMD.

If you want other brands, you can consider Zotac, it is just slightly more expensive than Gainward reference unit.

Hi Terence!

Just wanted to let u know I ended up getting just the zotac reference gtx970 to run with my core i7-870 😅 Butttt, witcher 3 runs really smooth now! I'm running on 1080p. Maybe cpu is being bottlenecked, but will use as long as possible since upgrading to sky lake now is really ex. On the other hand, I may end up following your build on haswell i3 to upgrade my other pc from q6600 to pair with my old gtx560 ti.

To Vcys86, I'm using the same cpu as you and have been researching and getting advise here, for me upgrading vid card was good enough. Have 8gb ram all along though. Previously was using gtx560 ti and witcher 3 at low was super sluggish, now it's really smooth!

Edit: seems like oc-ing this cpu to 4.0ghz can compensate the bottlenecking.

Hi terence_nwb,

What do you think of this specs?

Processor : i5 3.4 GHz (4460)
Asus B85M - G (need your recommendation for this too)
RAM Kingston 8GB
HDD WD 3.5 1TB
casing + psu (what do you recommend for these?)
GFC nvdia : GTX 750
DVD writer : Asus
Microsoft win 8.1 (OEM)

I mean I would like to have the option to upgrade in the future. And I play games like fallout, divinity original sins and team fortress 2.

Thanks thumbup.gif

For gaming? If yes then i5 + GTX970 is much better than i7 + GTX960. GPU is more important than CPU when we talk about gaming, getting an i7 and a mid end GPU won't give you the high or ultra settings that you want. So spend more on GPU instead, go for GTX970 and i5 and you will get almost 2x the performance of GTX960 and i7.

Intel Core i5 6500 - RM 875
MSI B150M Bazooka D4 - RM 409
Kingston HyperX Fury 8GB DDR4 2400MHz RAM - RM 289
Palit GTX970 4GB GDDR5 Jetstream - RM 1399
Liteon S900 256GB SSD - RM 409
WD Blue 1TB HDD - RM 225
Seasonic S12II 620W - RM 349
Thermaltake Versa H25 - RM 139

LOL sorry about that, forgotten to explain. Well......I forgot to factor in a monitor for it. So had to reduce a little bit. But I want your opinion on it? Is that ok? Well I need your recommendation on the motherboard, is that motherboard ok? Or is there a better one to go with the CPU. Those specs were proposed by a shop, but I am willing to top up a little bit. tongue.gif

GTX750 isn't really enough for Fallout 4 to be honest, you are just under the min requirements, if you are ok with low/med settings then it should be fine.

And about the upgrade ability, Haswell is currently being replaced by Skylake now, so in terms of CPU upgrade, nope, not possible to jump from Haswell to next gen CPU due to socket difference, but you still can upgrade to Haswell i7 next time if you want. As for GPU, no issue there since the board is also using latest PCI-E 3.0. If you can find MSI B85M-E45, then get it instead of the Asus board, it comes with additional 2 RAM slots for future upgrade when needed.

So the budget includes the OS license key too? If yes, then not much you can squeeze anymore because genuine key is quite expensive here, it would take maybe 10% of your budget sweat.gif

Hi guys,

I need gaming rig recommendation based on above preferences. I had left the computer hardware technology for quite long time and really need your opinion to help me out. Is there any specific brand for GPU that is better than others nowadays? I also thinking of getting Skylake instead of Haswell due to I will not be upgrading my rig in the future. So I might fork out extra cash so that the rig can last few years longer.

Thanks!
