hmm, theoretically it is almost impossible.. blink.gif

ZIP 2.0 format supported by WinRAR uses a proprietary encryption algorithm. RAR archives are encrypted by the much stronger AES-128 standard. If you need to encrypt sensitive information, it is better to select the RAR archive format. For real security use passwords of at least 8 characters in length. Do not use words of any language as passwords, it is better to choose a random combination of characters and digits. Note that passwords are case sensitive. Remember that if you lose your password, you will be unable to retrieve the encrypted files, not even the WinRAR author is able to extract encrypted files.

..remarks from WinRAR Help file.

see, even the author can't do it.. rclxub.gif but, there is nothing impossible.

so means it's impossible to decrypt it?

but nothing is impssible. if u have ample of time...

The downside is, the only way u can do it is by bruteforce which could take a hell lot of times.

Depends on how long your password... If it is less than 5 characters, my bet it will take almost 1-2 hours. But if it reaches up to 8 characters, you might need to spend 1-2 days. AES-128 is no joke (to think that AES-256 is almost not secure enough).

Hope you succeed in cracking. Cheers!

I read in the book that every time they double the encryption-bit strength (eg. from 128bit to 256bit), the amount of processing power needed to decrypt the same file is a power of two from the original processing power. Considering :

Rule 1- Time is a constant; decrypting spent exactly the same amount of time.
Rule 2- Processors architecture at the same level of bit-bandwidth; say amd64 definitely absolute their 32bit model bcoz of the increase of processing bandwidth.
Rule 3- Software Related Implementation; well, u should understand about multi-thread technology, different between OS'es already right?
Rule 4- etc.. i', getting lazy to write some more..yawn.gif

So, to avoid brute force decryption they'll gradually strengthen up their encryption bit. Maybe u have to wait until we saw CPU running at 10Ghz and above. That should be enough to pass Rule 2. Well, roughly maybe we can do it but we'll past Rule 1 by few hours or days..

Yeah something like that, but then again, when you do Brute Force Attacks, your RAM consumption increases, and that does slow down the PC too. Ideally, processing speed and time doesn't change, but rarely on a PC. I've myself done a Prime Number Search to evaluate this speed issue. Same thing. But again, nice info. Thanks! Cheers!

If you are willing to spend the time to generate the rainbow hash keys for 2 days non stop and leave the comp on cracking the RAR files for a few days I'm quite sure that you'll be able to do it.

It depends on yourself actually.

Happy cracking... smile.gif Good luck.

I also recovered the password for my protected rar file using this software - http://www.top-password.com/password-recovery-bundle.html. It took about one hour to crack my password.
