Most new house design now is just big  hall and dining together sharing space. It is just to create an illusion of space. When I bought my house, first thing comes to mind is to separate this but with something not permanent so that we can use big hall when required. I was thinking of foldable partition hanging from ceiling with no floor railing. The partion can be pushed to the wall when not used.

Then came this question. Why need to separate the dining and the family hall? When you have no visitor, you can dine while watching your TV. When you are having party among friends, you want to use big hall with no partition. When your friend comes for a visit like during CNY, Raya or even Christmas, some can sit in hall and still enjoy conversation with people at dining table.

So, I'm glad I did not go ahead with partition. Even when you have children, they can just eat at the kitchen. It would be just once or twice a year 

Donkey years back, a terrace house is with 24" wide, 80ft long.
Now is 16, 18 or max at 20ft. So if developer "partition" it first, it will look smaller.

I hate to sound like promoting this but maybe this will work ?

Each piece is RM 5.9, 40cmx40cm so can affort to buy 10 or more pieces. Plus some intallation costs.
